reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 6.2 innings of pure craftiness, 3.11 xFIP. I love this man. His "get me over curveball" was really helping him. Love that pitch, it looks like a slow hanger but they're just caught off guard. Beltre had a nice chuckle about it.

JJippidy Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 There was a time where I looked at Buerhle and thought he was an innings eating throw in with the Miami trade who was grossly overpaid... But the guys a f***ing horse, and I think I finally accept that while I dont understand how he has success with 83, its somehow not a fluke. I don't expect this level of performance to continue, but I oddly feel perfectly at piece when the freak of nature takes the mound.

A couple terrible months last season heavily influenced this forum, but for those who knew what he was, it was just a matter of time. He isn't an ace, not anymore anyways, but he is a solid #3 and often times pitches above that and right now is going through a very impressive stretch. This is why he got the contract he did and honestly, it's not nearly as bad as most were stating it was. In fact many who we're have shut there mouth about it, funny how that works.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 MB is a enigma. His innings eating and durability dealin' that goo never fails to amaze me. He deserved better last night but he will get a W in some games this year he didn't deserve I'm sure. I think he is @ $17mm 2014, but when you look at what Jiminez and Arroyo etc. have done for 12-13mm per its a steal so far this year. We all know he wont end up with a 2 ERA. But in this SP market 200 IP and an ERA around 4 is at a premium. MB is full value and has reignited his asset value as a LHP with vet experience to a team looking to bolster their depth should we ever need to go that way (which I hope we don't).

That's a very fair assessment. MB's April last year was epically bad and the whole team fell on its face. That against the backdrop of his contract had a chicken little effect. Some people were going on about his dogs and not liking TOR blah blah. When in fact MB is what he always has been.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I beat up on Buehrle because of his salary when the deal went down. On the FA market he was more in the 13/14 range and paying him 19 seemed stupid but he has certainly been our best starter and actually earned every penny . Chappy, you were right all along on him and I was wrong. Been lots of discussion on MLB radio about all the pitchers going for TJS and the max effort high nineties guys vs the command guys . MB spots his 83/84 MPH fastball with amazing control, never goes on the DL, doesn't K a lot but generates weak contact. Morrow throws with max effort, great stuff gets his K,s and gives up walks and goes on the DL. Right now command is proving better than velocity and stuff!! even if xFIP doesn't show it.
flafson Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Last time Buehrle was this good, he won a world series...
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Chisox had a great staff. We are 6 weeks in. Enjoy it while we can. He is amazing to watch.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Buehrle's K numbers and BB numbers are both worse vs last year. He's just keeping the ball in the park. His HR/FB rate is so far below his career average. Not sustainable but enjoy it while it lasts! Dude just knows how to pitch.
AngryBird Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 The first ace we've had since Halladay. Not a 38 year old bum knuckleballer who get's battered every other outing after scoring a big deal after one good year.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 In an era where pitchers are coddled and kept on strict pitch limits.... Mark Buehrle is about to throw 200 innings for the 14th straight season. Such an alpha.

It's Bark Muehrle, so he can probably avoid the curse, but if he doesn't hit 200 IP for injury reasons I say ECJF gets the ban hammer.

shortstop Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 sometimes i feel like giving him a standing ovation...while i'm watching at home...he's just a pleasure to watch...even when things are not going his way, he'll be pitching the same way - usually be a location issue when things don't go well - but right now, his location is money.
flafson Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Buerhle is no ace. Also, Dickey had 3 good years, not one. He was the opening day starter like a gazillion times to a team that did win the world series. Buehrle's wife had Orange County Choppers make a surprise bike for Mark to celebrate his perfect game. Can anyone find the full video clip from that show? I know it was Orange County Choppers season 6 episode 17.
AngryBird Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Buerhle is no ace. Also, Dickey had 3 good years, not one. Buerhle was the White Sox ace for many, many years and won a World Series, was the AL All-Star starter that world series year in 2005. And 3 "good" years in the NL after being stuck in the minors for 15. Take his jersey off, the guy is a bum.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I think many have admitted to being wrong about him. His salary is/was a problem for some because not many believed Rogers would cough up the $ necessary to continue to add to last year's payroll and they've been somewhat right. I'd actually regain some respect for AA if he traded Dickey and/or Buehrle in the off season and signed Lester/Masterson/Scherzer. Hopefully, they can get 2 decent players for either the junk-ballers and improve the team.
JJippidy Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 A jjippidy post... what a treat I came to this thread to make a post and realized I had already made one last night. While I should be concerned about the lack of memory I'm mostly impressed that my post was oddly readable.

Convo Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Buehrle is like a fine wine.... you know the saying
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 People forget that Mark Buehrle's success this year is really just an extension of the 2nd half of last year. He has just as much WAR over the past year as James Shields who most people would consider an ace. Factor in that the guy is made of titanium and I think this guys well worth the 20m a season. His current pace is probably unsustainable but I dont think its a stretch to assume he'll probably end this season with a sub 3.50 ERA in a division many people thought he no longer had the ability to pitch in.

The bolded isn't true. People tend to have their own definitions of ace, but Shields falls into the category of solid #2/fringe #1. One could make an argument that all of the pitchers above him are aces (Lester tends to be up and down in this debate).
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 (edited) Bump Can we get this man some run support please?? In his last 3 starts he has only given up 7 runs combined but has lost all 3 games because the Jays have scored only 5 themselves. Booooooo MB deserves WINZ! Edited June 24, 2014 by G-Snarls
