We may see an influx of new members over the new few weeks, please treat them with respect, no matter how much you may disagree with their opinon or topic of choice.

If we get off to a good start, you can expect it even more.

We want this site to grow, and it has the potential to be a lot bigger than it is right now. I think a lot of new members get turned off, or afraid to post, and end up leaving, and it shouldn't be like that.

There are going to be new baseball fans. There are going to be people new to message boards. We'll have young teens, and we'll have older fans. We'll have fans that have never heard of WAR or other saber stats before. We get in the gang mentality where one guy might jump on someone for something, and everyone else jumps in. Then Spanky gets involed.

Please just try to show people some respect, I'd love to see this place doubl in size by the end of this season.

This is actually one of the most chill boards I've seen. Some new blood never hurts, everyone remembers when they 1st became a fan.

He's gonna lose it when he reads it lol.

I love to read the "stand by me-esque" insults he hurls. Its greatly appreciated

I mean this with all sincerity - what is Spanky's deal? There must be some kind of backstory here, because he obviously acts "different" and no one takes him to task or does anything about it. A lot of personal attacks, but often incoherent and/or misspelled. Even when he's not presenting insults, it's often virtually impossible to understand what he's trying to say. I'm assuming he's co-opting some sort of skit/bit, but I'm not familiar with it. So, what is it? Is he just embodying some popular culture reference? Is he slow, but well meaning, and everyone feels bad for him, so they play along with him. What's the inside joke here?

Brilliant suggestion.

LOL

I could have made the board some beer $ with the warnings/infractions/bans I've handed out in the last week.

I remember my first dumb thread.

I remember arguing with Grant that it was a good idea to sign Juan Pierre or something like that. He was good in the baseball vid that got me into the game (MVP '05, so good). Think about dat avg and dem SB's!!!

Oh the dumb days.

Maybe there should be a sticky thread explaining some sabr concepts like WAR and xFIP etc...and (tactfully) explaining the general uselessness of RBIs and pitcher wins etc.

Best part of these boards... active mods that keep the thread spamming down.

Will be easier to accomplish once he's optioned to Buffalo, and out of sight

There's already something like that on the blog that bould be used.

As someone who lurked at the old forum on the Blue Jays web site and this one. I find this one to be far more chill. Probably because we are not being flooded by trolls

I think that would be a great idea for this site. There should be something on this site and not just on the blog. Would be a great resource and would add to the site.

I always used to trade for Pierre in that game! Best leadoff man there was. Him or Furcal.

As a woman (one of the few), and as an old one, I can tell you that this forum is not a place that you want to be, unless you go along with the herd. The mere fact that admin feels it is necessary to start this thread, should speak volumes. I actually could care less if anyone agrees with me or not. But, an opinion, (anyone's opinion) should be given some respect. There is a gang mentality, that appears as soon as someone dare to disagree with any of the so called knowledgeable posters. Right or wrongly, there is a feeling here, that if you aren't one of the chosen ones, you have to be either dumb, a casual fan, or not worth speaking to.

If this is a closed society, where only the sabr fanatics are welcome, that is fine, it is your club. But if you want it to grow, then you need to do things differently.

Well said. Tolerance on both sides needs to be preached.

Couldn't agree with you more. I've stated in the past how this forum is a breeding ground for pessimism and just a generally depressing tone. Some of the more opinionated and well respected guys have their points of view and that is great because much of it is bang on, however, many other just jump on board anything they say and blindly follow them creating this cult like following.

I really love learning about advanced stats and new ways to measure players and performance, but some of it goes to the extreme and that can be quite unwelcoming to new members who either don't know enough about advanced stats or are too afraid to state their opinions from fear of being ridiculed.

A more welcoming tone on this forum would help to grow this thing and bring new opinions and fresh thoughts to discussion.

Spanky is fine. We've had tussles. He's insulted me several times. I've insulted him.

However if I say something he agrees with, he will tend to agree with me. If I say something he disagrees with he will tell me I'm dumb.

I certainly don't think he is slow. Probably the opposite. He is tired of the constant negativity I think.

1. I'd like to say that in most cases people here are accepting of people that aren't particularly into advanced stats. It's those that completely dismiss them that usually start issues (or get ganged up on should you choose to look at it from that way). No one is expected to understand math formulas or know how JFAs came up with TIPS...but be willing to understand basic stats and small sample sizes would be nice. Critical thinking isn't something that should be expected on a message board but it really should be (in all aspects of your life). Now I'll take some shots at the herd...if someone questions something you said, rather than call them an idiot...try explaining why you think that. I'll use JFAs as an example as I don't think he'd be offended. He'll make a "I'll take _______ over _________" generally most of us know that it's based on the projection systems but if someone questions him it would be great if he gave a reason outside of "he's projected at ___ wins". Again this is just an example. Not everyone wants to be here to educate others, and I understand that.

2. When a new poster comes on stop with the f***ing "are you the Dogg" posts. We are almost a year old on this board. 90% of us never check that board. Let's distance ourselves from it. If you know someone is the dogg report them and stop responding.

3. Have fun talking baseball, have fun talking s***, have fun period.

Yep, Spanky is okay.

Queen Bee TS is the real one you need to look out for. That guy and his following, the hive, are enough to get anyone to stop posting here.

That's the problem when you start a board with a set bunch. If you start from scratch everyone is new and people trickle in.

But this group started with 50+ that have known each other and posted for a long time. So a lot of time the thinking and ideas are the same. And like I said new guy comes a long with different ideas or doesn't do something the 'right' way, one guy makes a comment and everyone else jumps in.

I think this board should be a lot bigger than it is, but is being held back because of some of these issues.

That being said I used to be the first one to jump down someone's throat for a stupid idea lol. But there is also a way to post your ideas/thoughts. Some come in open to learn and be ready for debate while some come in thinking they should be GM and anyone that disagrees is wrong.

Yeah I'm just saying we don't have to reinvent the wheel. We can link to the same content from this site. Would give the blog some extra visibility too.

Just to be clear, we only have to show respect to NEW members right? Not you godless Mod control freak bastards?

Nothing wrong with that.. you will easily notice when his posts make sense sometimes.... he's sober then.
