saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Even that's an exaggeration. He's throw 46.2 Major League innings in the past five seasons. But sure, he'll be a dependable #4 starter for us this year. We can count on him. Yeah..because there are tons of dependable #4 pitchers making 1.5 million. McGowan arm was healthy last year without any surgeries. His arm thus far in spring is extremely healthy for his standards. He could give you 40 innings in the pen for 1.5 million dollars with great stuff and you want to toss him aside because you're assuming he will get hurt. Do you know how fast the Yankees would sign him if he got released. A 1.5 million dollar gamble for a plus bullpen arm is a no brainer for a team like them. 1.5 million is tipping money for the Yankees and they'd be all over a pitcher with 3 plus pitchers for that kind of dough.

Well maybe the team is better off seeing it through with him but it's also pretty clear that he shouldn't have been on a Major League contract all this time. Players like Grady Sizemore, who have accomplished a lot more at the major league level, have been signed to Minor League deals and McGowan should have as well. Maybe you think teams will line up to give him a 25 man roster spot and 1.5 million dollars but I'm not so convinced. I don't think it's inconceivable he clears. No matter how much you try to hype him up, he's still just a project, one that most contenders probably wouldn't bother with.

I would wager large sums of money that if the Jays dfa'd a healthy dustin McGowan right now that he would get picked up.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 He meant LHP. Oh ok that makes a lot more sense.

I don't think he's a DFA candidate in the team's eyes.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Please just DFA this clown. On the plus side he won't misplay any easy fly balls to RF. Still kind of a crappy place to put a guy with a cannon for an arm. I'm sure it's only as a severe emergency situation where all other bench guys on the team somehow get hurt in the same game and the choices are down to Sierra or a big piece of plywood with a basket.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Please just DFA this clown. Now you don't DFA him . You play it out and then try and slip him thru waivers . He hasn't hit in the minors , He has about as much baseball smarts as some of the little leaguers I've coached and obviously ( Because he has had years of coaching ) isn't very coachable . Will he make it thru waivers ??? probably not but may as well try
kgm1 Verified Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 What pisses me off about this is Franklin Guiterez would have cost what ? 2 mil ? and as a 4th OF RH bat off the bench that would have been pretty good depth
Sparky12 Verified Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Playing him at 1b and taking away his only good defensive ability(arm) doesn't make to much sense
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 BTS really hates Sierra. But he will be a fine bench option if he hits lefties only and plays very little defense. Hes fine in RF or LF in a pinch. His arm is special. The corners in Toronto is quite easy to play. If he can play 1B that means we see less Lind against lefties. BTS is a Mexicans hater
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 Brazilians > Cubans > Mexicans > Dominicans Gomes > JPA > Navarro > Carlos Santana?

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I thought our infield defense was suppose to be improved this year?
flafson Verified Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 What is the chance both games will be aired tomorrow? Any idea what the pitching lineup will be? I know Stroman goes against the Tigers and Morrow against the other team.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 With Cabrera an impending free agent, and the 2015 payroll looking gigantic even without a LF and CF, I think keeping Sierra is probably wise. If he turns into something useful, great. If not, that's fine too. But I wouldn't drop him for nothing. Not a team that lacks cheap controllable assets like the Jays.
fireballW Verified Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 If he's going to suck on defense just put him at second base instead. One of the best arms in baseball and he'll be playing 1B.

I think his bat is too good to just give away. he has top quality RF quality arm, but they have no place to put him. Unless they have Melky DH some and Jose DH some... they are only trying him at first because they need to figure out how to get him ABs. If he can survive at first for an inning it would mean the Jays could bring him off the bench to pinch hit for Lind and then take over at first if they need O and the other team throws in a lefty. I know I'll catch flack for it, but at this point Sierra has more upside than Gose. Gose has not gotten any better in the last couple years. he can run be he's as thick as a brick.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Gose has far more upside than Sierra. Sierra's only hope of hanging around an MLB club is learning to pitch and becoming a long reliever/bench bat. IMO. he's going to play a full season with the jays this year.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 he's going to play a full season with the jays this year. Gose will be with AAA unless Gump dies.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 his bat is too good Based on what? He's literally never been a good hitter. Gose isn't much of a hitter either but he can at least provide CF defense.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Based on what? He's literally never been a good hitter. Gose isn't much of a hitter either but he can at least provide CF defense. Gose has not been able to steal in the bigs and that was his big upside. bad enough he cant get on base, he gets thrown out a huge % of the time when he tries to steal. Gose's defense is not even close to what Colby provides and he has NO accuracy in his arm. If he was getting better at all he wouldn't suck, but he does and he will. I'd rather have Davis on the team. at least he could hit righties and was almost an automatic steal. Sierra has been moving up since aug of last year in hitting. he spent the winter getting even better in winter ball. he has put in time into not only his hitting, but also into his throwing. his footwork is a lot better and his accuracy has gotten a lot better. he's never had trouble with his arm strength. I think Sierra is this year's break out player. I think he is under rated. I think Sierra has figured out that he has to work harder because he doesn't want to be a fringe player. Gose will be mediocre in AAA again and has always been over rated.
Convo Verified Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 So how did Sierra do a 1B??? I guess the board was down during the game.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 So how did Sierra do a 1B??? I guess the board was down during the game. It's hard to see over the radio, they obviously made some outs when he was on the field because they were able to finish the game...

I always thought this about Gose too but he's 19 for 25 in SB, that is good and too small a sample size to judge anyway. With that said the guy seems completely lost at the plate, like he just looks like he's given up. It looks like he won't amount to anything, at best a 4th OF / pinch-runner type.

If he cant OBP370 he's a joke. with that speed he would do it easily if he wasn't a butt head. to be that fast and not be able to bunt or know how to hit hoppers the other way. anything that three bounces to short is an easy single but the dumb ass thinks he's a power hitter. cant fix stupid. Sierra has shown that he has figured it.... cant say that about Gose.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 It would be a very rare event for a guy who was only league-average offensively in AAA as a 24-year old to make it in the majors as a DH. Not impossible, obviously, but very, very unlikely. So unlikely that I wouldn't hesitate to cut him. I know you dont like him. His defense and base running have been colossally bad as he has come up. He's been a contact guy all the time, but chasing bad pitches and he seems to have worked that out. being more patient and understanding "his" pitch could easily put him over the top offensively. if he can not run into stupid outs that makes him a lot better as well. watch his footwork next time he plays RF. he was working on more than just hitting in the off season. Gose has been staring at his own awesomeness in the mirror. no way I'd give Sierra away.
