LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Is Los Viste a thing this year? If anyone does any of those pseudo gang symbols they should be sent to AAA. Gibbons needs to actually f***ing take control of his team. Hands off = not good with these immature clowns. Pseudo gang symbols what? Have you ever been on a competitive baseball team? Hand signals are a fun thing teams do when they get an extra base hit. The pirates do Zoltan from Dude wheres my car, the Rangers do the moose antlers. My team does the zoro. They're not gang symbols, they're fun, keep the mood light. Who cares if they do the Lo viste let them have fun. If you really think the Lo viste contributes to them losing you're an idiot.

The hand symbol stuff is kind of dumb but it's the kind of thing where every fan is fine with it then the team does well and finds it super irritating when the team does poorly. It's evem more annoying when it calls attention to one of the team's most terrible players. Lo Viste sucks because Bonifacio sucks.
Convo Verified Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 god I hope it does blow up no way this will work we don't have the pitching staff necessary to compete in the playoffs even if we do make it. Whats the point in a first round exit if we magically grab a wild card spot ? Someone bribe Theo Epstein and lets start again. There's no way you can say this with conviction. The pitching staff we have in Morrow, Dickey, Buehrle, and possibly Hutchison are more than capable, and considering we could easily have a top 10 offense... all hope is not lost yet.
8D Verified Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Who do you guys keep if we blow it up? Anyone? Who is off limits? Not even sure if keeping Lawrie makes sense given his prime years won't matter much here.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I don't think a blow up is necessary. It can be reworked, but off limits in a blow up would be Lawrie yes, Hutch and Stroman. Trade: Bautista Encarnacion Reyes Dickey Morrow Buehrle Wow, those guys could bring back some top-tier talent. We could end up with 3-4 legit MLB-ready prospects, along with several guys in the lower levels
8D Verified Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 And pretty much the whole BP. Let two or three go at certain deadlines throughout the entire year.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Out of curiosity, do you guys think EE is as highly regarded around the league as he is by the saber community? I think it's a pretty common theme here that we all view him as "elite", but do the rest of the league's front offices too (save for Tampa). Not only that, but when do we expect to see an EE decline? Someone like JFaS should be able to answer this accurately. If we could infuse the ML roster with young, ML ready talent, does it make sense to keep EE around to DH? Disclaimer: I know there are many variables such as he theoretically should bring in the biggest haul (if he's valued correctly across the league), that he might be looking for his big pay day, etc. Just trying to get a feel for everyone else's opinions.

Not even sure if keeping Lawrie makes sense given his prime years won't matter much here. I think you keep everyone we currently have who has at least 2 more arbitration years, and trade everyone else (unless they're having a really bad year and have more than 1 year of control left). I know some people will disagree on that (there's some people like Cecil and Delabar on that keep list), but the reason I say that is because I think the return they'd bring can be maximized by holding onto them a little longer. Basically it would mean trading Buehrle, Reyes, Bautista, Dickey, EE, Melky, Morrow, Lind, Rasmus, Happ, Janssen, Santos, Izzy, Navarro, McGowan, and if AA bought off a witch doctor, Romero. Cecil could be maximized by moving to the closer's role for a year, then traded at the 2015 deadline or following offseason. Do the same with Delabar but advance it a year. Someone will pay for 'dem saves.

Well he was chosen as an all star so thats some recognition and really other GMs will take notice of EEs wicked K/BB ratio stats like that are hard to be fluked because its a measure of discipline which remains relatively stable (Hes only reached 100ks once in in his career in 2007). I think EE is legit and the only decline I expect is the one that naturally comes with age. That being said I trade him now and JB for the moon because we DO NOT have a team that can legitimately compete in the AL east never-mind the world series.

Bautista Encarnacion Reyes Rasmus Dickey Morrow Buehrle Melky Lind Navarro McGowan Happ Cecil Delabar Janssen Santos Rogers If things go south all of these guys could easily be traded to bring back pieces for a "rebuild" if you will. The only one I'd think about keeping if we were gonna go that route is Colby Rasmus. All the rest could definitely be traded and bring back a huge haul to help set us up nicely for the future. I just can't see a fire sale ever happening but you just never know. Man this season could go so many f***ing ways haha. Should be interesting.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Realistically, I can't see this team ever going the route of a full blown rebuild within the next few years, more likely a retool, but in a very cost conservative way. It can work if the right guys are traded off at the right time.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 This statement is completely false. Jays sold WAY more tickets last year than many years before I don't know how the numbers translate at all but is 440,000 tickets worth $42,000,000 in bottom line ($90+ per ticket)? Ratings weren't up that much or at all. I'm guessing that Sportsnet may have done okay to sell advertising based on projected numbers (remember when they said they wouldn't be surprised if viewers doubled). I highly doubt the difference in the Jays bottom line was huge considering what it did for expectations (including expectations that the Jays will sustain a top 10 payroll)
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Why didn't they increase payroll after 2010 when they won 85 games? Or after 2011 when they won 81 and with Darvish/Cespedes available? Why did they wait until after 2012 when they won 73 games and had as many injury and performance question marks as they did? Because Rogers was taking a s***-kicking from the fans and media as all blame was shifted on not spending. I know that they asked AA to be more public partially for this reason, I think it's very possible that the spending was a factor in this too.

It can work if the right guys are traded off at the right time. If you go the route of trading our talent with an eye on retooling I don't think we have to go "full rebuild" in our case. Bautista and Edwin get you a premium MLB ready prospect and likely a very good prospect (or maybe two). There contracts alone are quite valuable. Reyes probably gets you a premium MLB ready prospect and a lesser prospect. Not that much surplus in his contract, but he is a name and will produce good WAR at a premium position in the short term. Dickey should be able to get you a nice return with pedigree and a dirt cheap contract. 200IP lock and Cy Young upside. Rasmus and Melky are rentals, but can certainly net you some talent (not MLB ready blue chippers, but talent). Trade the whole BP for whatever. Maybe keep some of the controllable guys if the return isn't right. Trade those guys this year and you have a nice base of young MLB ready talent. Use the money you saved to sign a few good FA's to compliment the young guys. Front load their contracts so you can extend the above noted prospects. If you pick the right prospects and sign the correct FA's you can be back to the level of this team (or better) in a couple of years with a much better long term outlook.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 If you go the route of trading our talent with an eye on retooling I don't think we have to go "full rebuild" in our case. I guess the main concern I would have with a large-scale retooling is that the same guys that inefficiently assembled the current team would be in control of identifying the return players in any deal. Yes, in theory we have a lot of guys that we could deal for a decent return, but do you trust the AA/Beeston regime to target the appropriate guys? I sure don't.

He is allready in his decline phase. I think the concensus is that he's hit into a bit of bad luck the last couple of years. Based on k-rate he should of hit .300. So the two factors may cancel out. He'll lose a little as he gets into his 30s but might have better luck as well.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Predicting decline phases is extremely hard. I doubt there's a tried and true method. Everyone ages differently in the first place and with performance enhancing drugs it's gotten even more complex. David Ortiz looked stick a fork in him done about four years ago and he's still going strong. He's defying age patterns pretty dramatically. He probably has the most supicious career ark of any current player but the truth is we have no idea how many players use drugs to cheat aging. Not knowing leaves us almost completely in the dark when it comes to predicting decline phases. What may seem like the beginning of a player's decline (Ortiz, a few years back) often turns out to just be a temporary downturn.

I think a better argument for why Ortiz wouldn't be declining is that he became a full time DH relatively young and that has given his body a bit of a break because at his age he really should have lost some bat speed in addition to everything else.

The sample size is a little small on the tail ends, but like I said it was just a quick dirty test that was unusually interesting to look at. Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Yep SO improve and BBs improve as players get older, but speed declines hard from 24 and power declines after 29. From my admittedly smaller sample, it actually seems like power as a whole may decline, but not home runs. The decline comes from doubles and especially triples (probably related to the decline in speed).
