How do you know that the Cubs have offered at least $100,000,000? Do you have a legitimate source?

I'd prefer we sign Jimenez as well as a depth guy, but we should definitely be in on Tanaka. He's the only guy on the market who can truly fill our rotation hole and the speculated price for him doesn't seem obscene to me. The uncertainty on him is being overblown. He has #2 starter stuff and a history of durability. That's enough for me to back the truck up.

There was a report stating as such earlier today. Went on to say league sources expected one team to blow them out of the water.

Rumour that the Cubs are 'prepared' to offer nine figures != The Cubs have offered nine figures.

There's a difference. Maybe the Cubs are trying to hype the price up so that the D'Backs get disinterested and overpay for Samardzija.

The rumour I read said it was offered as in on the table. It could've been someone who misinterpreted an original report that is common place lately.

Have the Tanaka slow-mo strikeouts been posted btw?

The vesting option can deal with your concern - "must not finish the final year o the disable list" - further the Jays take out an insurance policy on injury so if he blows his arm up insurance pays not the Jays.

Wonderful. This makes it even worse. Let's say Tanaka is really awesome for 6 years. He guarantees the option. Suffers an injury near end of year 6. But the option is allready guarenteed. EXCEPT "must not finish the final year on the disable list". Fine. His agent gets him back for the last 2 weeks of the last year.

I remember when Frank Thomas lost just a little playing time in May of 2008 that his agent went banana's (because there was an option that year).

Your scenario ends in a clusterf*** if Tanaka is great for 5 or 6 years, injured, then wants to come back late in the season of the last year.

Black? He looks more like a dark blue to me.

It's your desire, not reality.

or Dice-K minus the gyro-ball :P

Iwakuma or Kuroda with a plus fastball.

To be honest, he looks good in hats of teams that already have Asian pitchers. Out of place w/ Angels, D'Backs, A's, Blue Jays and White Sox. Cubs don't fit into that but anyone looks good in a Cubs hat because it's a classic design.

Im going with the dark horse everyone stopped discussing (unless i missed a memo with reason)

Think SEA takes him

This is what I've been saying ever since they changed the posting rules (before that it was easily the Yankees imo).

Yeah maybe its mildy racist but as No49 mentioned, its much easier to see him in NY, LAD, Sea, Tex, Bos hat cause we assosciate an Asian SP with that hat

Tanaka's stuff is nasty in the bottom of the zone. I think he's going to be a great GB pitcher and with a plus splitter quite possibly a perfect fit for the RC. I don't think the Jays will sign him though.

Wouldn't it be nice if he signed with the Yankees and turned into Irabu...

He said he loves pressure. If he signs with the Yankees and scuffles, he'll get more pressure than he bargained for. I do love seeing things go wrong for the Yankees too :)

amazing post

Born in Toronto lived there - lived in BC. If it wasn't about money and I had my choice I would EASILY choose BC in a second.

Tanaka is going to be a hugely wealthy man no matter where he goes but his wife is correct - given the choice Seattle, LAD, LAA, San Francisco, San Diego in a second over a places like NYY or disaster areas like Pittsburgh, Detroit or Cleveland. Toronto and maybe Boston I'd consider on the east coast and Miami if the owner wasn't a clueless git.

Still the Tanakas will be able to afford homes in every major city they play in if they so wish. The Mrs. can live in Seattle while Tanaka can play in NY.

When the Yankees give him the 8 year $192million I think the "I want to live on the west coast" argument will wash away and be recognized as a ply to get more money.

Or they're genuine in which case the west coast is far more desirable IMO.

I would get enough money to live extremely comfortably and go to San Diego. Who cares if the Yankees bid more. I'd move right now if I could, never deal with -30 with windchill again.

Warm climate is overrated, plus, in terms of places to live(considering that you'd already be a millionaire) New York is a good option.

What i don't understand, for sure AA knows our chances are very slim, so why not get a deal with one of the available SP free agents? We don't have any competition until Tanaka signs so why not use that?

I guess the other side would be the players not wanting to sign until their stocks rise which means wait until Tanaka signs...

You have to figure that some of these free agent pitchers must be getting impatient. That seems a more fruitful pursuit than being a longshot in a bidding war for Tanaka. Of course, we don't actually know what kind of money AA has to play with. So far, it's looked like he doesn't have any but maybe he has more than we realize. If the does have money, I really don't agree with this strategy of waiting until the last minute and going pitching or bust but that was discussed ad nauseum back when there still were other options.

"Chances are very slim" is a myth on this site. People just repeat this s*** and believe it's the truth. Jays haven't signed anyone because they have legit chances at Tanaka. Think about it, it's the only scenario that makes sense here. Doesn't mean we get him, but this endless pointless speculation is real dumb. I defy anyone to confirm they have REAL information on the Jays and Tanaka. Maybe the same person who knew we would get Reyes etc etc last year can speak up. Oh wait, that person doesn't exist unless they work in Jays management.
