I don't understand the love for Espinosa on this board. The only appeal he has is as a very buy low option. Problem is if that were the case he would have already been traded. Washington won't just simply let him go for nothing. This is a guy who's projected at 0.2 war by steamers. He was wRC+ 23 in a small sample at the major league level and then was JP Arencibia bad at AAA with the bat.

Why give up anything of value to land him? If the Nats want to give him away for nothing of value? Sure...why not? Shouldn't give up anything of value for him though.

Hopefully it goes without saying, but I`m not advocating trading disproportionate talent to acquire any player, regardless of need.

Espinosa`s appeal is based on tremendous 2B defense with considerably more offensive upside than this team currently has at the position. Additionally, he`s a very capable defender at SS (sadly probably better than Reyes), which is valuable when Jose inevitably goes down for an extended period. He`s also cost controlled.

Strikeout rates aside, he`d be a nice addition to a team that has one viable middle infielder.

He played the entire year with a cracked bone in his wrist and bone spurs in his shoulder, he's since had surgery on both, that's why? Last year's numbers were obviously flawed, by this, and don't ask me why they had him play through it?!

I didn't know about the injuries. It's a moot point....the Nationals aren't trading him unless they clearly "win" the trade. No team is going to do that after last year.

Earlier in the offseason, Cecil+ a lesser piece would almost certainly have gotten it done. If that was indeed the asking price and Boras was the only issue, I`ll s*** a brick.

I`ve moved on to hoping that Owings can still be had and Towers hasn`t fully recovered from the mini stroke he obviously suffered a few weeks ago.

Fire Beeston. Let AA operate without the Boras and "selling entertainment" restrictions. No Beeston and the Marlins trade (and then ultimately Dickey trade) Never happens.

everyday I wake up hoping I'll read on MLBTR Jays land Tanaka + Garza and trade Morrow+ for Phillips ...

although payroll would be like 170m, so no chance it really does happen

Discussion this morning on XM on Tanaka and teams that are in on him. Lengthy talk of the Jays, and Ferrin said that the Jays had someone watching every game he pitched. Said there was a parade of Jays personnel, from the top to the bottom. Said he would not be surprised if the Jays were in on him heavily. Also talked about where Tanaka would choose to go. Said that HE could see no reason that he wouldn't pick to go there. International city, large Japanese population (don't know if this is true or not).

Don't know if any of this is true, just passing it along.

Toronto doesn't have a large Japanese population. Thanks for sharing Leaffie but whenever someone asserts that Toronto does I ignore the rest of what they said. It just shows the were too lazy to fact check.

Quote was taken from a National Post article written in March of this year.

The number of Japanese people in Toronto — never very large compared to, say, the Chinese or Italian communities — has grown. Citizenship and Immigration figures say 1,475 Japanese nationals lived in all of Canada as permanent residents in 2011, a rise of 37% over 1,080 in 2002. Meanwhile, according to the Japanese consulate in Toronto, the number of Japanese citizens registered in its jurisdiction (which spans all of Ontario outside of Ottawa) rose from 7,949 in 2007 to 9,756 in 2011, the last year for which statistics were available. These might be permanent residents or holders of work or student visas.

I shocked at just how few Japanese actually live in Canada.

Well I can't tell them apart, were all the Asian people at games last year for Kawasaki japanese?

Probably? There probably aren't enough Japanese people in Ontario to even fill the RC. British Columbia has a large Japanese population but I don't think that would factor in to a move to Toronto.

Seattle is pretty much at it's spending limit.

This is funny, because they spent so much on Cano and will most likely finish 2nd last in the AL west.

Lol, I'm still expecting a 4th place finish for Seattle.

I did not read this whole thread and maybe missed it but do we know who all bid 20mill before he signs or is it just going to be a guess of who posted a bid??

I think that Rakuten have 5 days to announce who is/are the highest bidder (0-20 millions), then, that team/teams should agree with Tanaka before January 24th.

Do you think he will sign quick or drag it out....

The way I understand it is, every team can negotiate with him with the assumption they will pay 20 mil if they sign him...maybe I'm wrong.

Casey close is on vacation until next week apparently. So nothing will even start til next Monday.

I'm guessing he signs on jan 24th.

I can see 15-20 teams bidding 20M. I can only see 5-6 teams willing to pay 6-7 years 100+ million.

I see Yankees or a surprise team like Houston (with a massive contract) grabbing him.

Sounds about right

Many MLB teams (Blue Jays, D'Backs, Angels) could try to expedite the Tanaka process 'cause they want to know the final price of Garza, Ubaldo Santana ASAP.

There is no bidding process btw. You just sign Tanaka and then pay Rakuten $20M (the release fee, which is set by the Japanese club at $20M or less). It's a one-step deal.

So we will never know if AA is serious about Tanaka or not unless he signs him. "Bidding" should be removed from the title.

Yep. The Tanaka thing should have been wrapped up 3-4 weeks sooner.

Teams need to make decisions.

I don't understand how his agent can take a vacation when his two biggest clients Tanaka and Kershaw are due for big paydays this offseason

now I am confused, I'm reading different bidding processes for him

Wrong!

Nope, you are wrong Spank! Do your research before calling out others.

Here are the details: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/mlb-npb-reach-agreement-on-posting-system?ymd=20131216&content_id=66013956

There is NO BIDDING. The Japanese team sets a release fee, and the signing team must pay that after agreeing to terms with the player. It is non-negotiatable. If you don't like the fee, you don't sign the player. The Japanese team can set the fee to be anything, with a $20M max.

Ok so here are the rules

"The new agreement between Nippon Professional Basbeall (NPB) and the MLB features new rules. In the new posting system…

1) A NPB team must agree if they want to post one of their players between November 1st and February 1st.

2) The NPB team will make a “release fee” that teams may post to get the rights to negotiate with the player. However, the maximum “release fee” that can be requested is $20 million.

3) In the event that there is a tie on the “release fee,” then all teams will get an attempt at negotiating with the posted player with the intent of signing the player.

4) If the posted player is unable to agree to a contract with a MLB team, the “release fee” is returned to the team and the player returns to his NPB team until the following November 1st when he may formally request to be posted again."

Where did you hear/read this? It's not a new rule just for Tanaka that the MLB worked out with the NPB, it's for all players that want to come overseas?

I'm a bit confused myself. But, I'm not sure now, because do teams have the full 30 days to agree to the release fee? I think if it worked where teams agreed to post the release fee before negotiating a deal with the agent, then that list of teams would have been leaked already.
