Source: #Brewers agree to minor league deal with LHP Brad Mills

I've always thought Mills would be an ideal guy to try sticking in the pen rather than as a starter. Bring the fastball up to 89 or 90 along with that nasty curve and he might actually be able to provide some value.

I always thought (hoped) he'd find a home in SD or LA. I love Brad Mills.

Now you can live vicariously through Nolin..

Actually i dont think i used the term right..but you know what i mean

After downloading the 2013 Blue Jays full season pitch data (Every single pitch!), doing some work with specific pitches.

Mark Buehrle 2013 TIPS of each pitch:

4seam: 4.96

Cutter: 4.72

2seam: 5.30

Curve: 3.01

Change: 3.01

f*** Buehrle, don't throw fastball, just use your offspeed.

He uses his FB to make the other pitches more effective. Great work by JFaS but I wouldn't bother criticizing the way Buehrle pitches, he is a master at his craft.

Janssen and Buehrle are similar type pitchers:

Janssen:

4seam: 5.14

Cutter: 4.65

Curve: 1.61

Slider (only 26 pitches): 2.35

I want percentages.

Percentages of pitches thrown?

You can find that on FanGraphs under PitchF/x pitch selection.

I know ... If you'll do a job, do it completely.

4seam: 4.96 = ??

Cutter: 4.72

2seam: 5.30

Curve: 3.01

Change: 3.01

Posted
4seam: 4.96, 29.8%

Cutter: 4.72, 19.6%

2seam: 5.30, 19.9%

Curve: 3.01, 7.1%

Change: 3.01, 23.5%

Bad news. His fastball rate is low, can't be reduced more (~70%)

Buehrle is a master at his craft, specifically pitching, but he is not a master at pitch selection. Because it's so important to him to work fast he always goes with the first sign no matter what it is. It would be interesting to break down his numbers a little more to see if he was indeed throwing too many fastballs during his early season struggles. If he was, it's because that's what JPA was calling.

Good think Dickey won the knuckleball category ... :)

Heh, imagine if a pitcher with a mid 90's fastball actually developed a reliable knuckler... That would be crazy to try to hit against

I wonder if the effectiveness would decrease as the velocity got too high (ie, would it move more or less?)

It's a show me fastball haha :)

No one in the MLB is better at disrupting a hitters timing than Buehrle. Part of it is how the insanely fast pace he pitches at but, it's mostly an insanely adept baseball mind and a player who truly understands the art of pitching. It's amazing how much he accomplishes with underwhelming stuff.

BEST:

4Seam: Delabar 3.41

Cutter: Cecil 2.82 (SSS)

2seam: Happ 3.78

Curve: Janssen 1.61

Slider: Santos 0.72

Change: Loup 1.97

Knuckle: Dickey 4.06

Splitter: Wang 1.06 (SSS) (Delabar is classified as change)

Sinker: Redmond 4.08

No duplicates!

The biggest surprise has to go to Loup's CH, I knew it was good but I didn't expect it to lead the team in TIPS.

I'm not sure it's even the baseball mind, since he lets the catcher call the game. He's just good at attacking hitters and sitting on the corners. I really wish more pitchers would take his approach though and just worry about hitting their spots (thinking Drabek and Morrow in particular)

Though it can't beat Santos 54.2% O-Swing and 30% SwStr on his slider.

Man I hope he can stay on the field for the next few years. He is just a joy to watch pitch. That slider is totally filthy.

I'm not usually all that pumped when we add RP's, but I was gitty when we traded for him.

I refuse to invest the time that is really needed to truly understand the depths of some of these stats haha.

It is much appreciated though!!

Even Uehara's splitter in 2013 didn't reach those numbers. You could make a very defensible case that Santos' slider is the best pitch in the MLB.

It is beyond filthy, by both the eye test and these stats. What a devastating pitch from a guy who also sports a 95 MPH fastball. But DAMN if he could stay healthy. :(

Vernon Wells has been DFAd by the Yankees. What a fall from grace for

the former 3-time all Star when he was with the Jays. Wonder where he ends up next.

Im fairness, hes already had a belly-full of humble pie being one of worst hitters in bb the last few seasons,

Who cares where he ends up next. Seems Uncle Tom'ish enough to have been smart with his $.

Dont feel any pity for him, hes ok

Once he (presumably) clears waivers, he might not be the worst option in the world as a 4th outfielder and bench bat with some pop. At the very least, it would probably add far more revenue to the club than his contract would cost as it would get some of the casuals excited. If things didn't go well, cut him and bring up Pillar or something. (Still prefer someone like Baker though)
