Zero need for it. The rule itself isn't finalized and the wording still being worked on and re-done, but the gist will be that if the catcher doesn't have the ball and is in the baseline, it will be obstruction, and the runner cannot run over the catcher if he does have the ball, he would have to slide or do something else to avoid the tag.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2013 Author Posted December 11, 2013 Why booooooo? Health and safety of players should be a primary concern of any sports league, and if you can eliminate the possibility of potentially devastating injuries on a play that doesn't add anything to the game(IMO) why not do it?
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 I agree. There isn't any need for it. First thing that popped into my mind was Posey's injury from two years back.

Some tradionalists prob think it adds something to the game. I'd have to see data on the whole thing before I had an opinion

I'd have to see data on the whole thing before I had an opinion Well, just from watching baseball year in and year out, home plate collisions really don't happen all that often. But the severity of injuries that can occur, most notably concussions, it's just something that can easily be avoided and lose nothing from the experience of a close play at the plate.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 So now they'll have the "Tippy Toeing" rule. How about having the runner kiss the catcher while they're at it. They don't make them like they use to.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 First thought: That's lame. Second thought: Do I really care to see any more Buster Posey and Yasmani Grandal injuries? Not really.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 They should have the umpire be the protective shield for the catcher.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Zaun's reaction to this will be priceless.

I'm all for eliminating this: http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/726961/posey.gif.opt_medium.gif

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 That play is already illegal under the rules. Buster didn't have the ball, he was obstructing Cousins. Most of this new decision is enforcing a rule that already exists.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 hmmmm I don't know how I feel about this. My first thought is that this is lame, it's exciting to see a play at the plate. On the other hand, watching a few of those injuries like what happened to Posey make this a good move.

I remember another GIF of the runner just running at a full clip and then diving shoulder first into Posey.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I love this. I remember calling for it immediately after the Posey injury.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Author Posted December 12, 2013 These do not surprise me. And the counter from dirk
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 They'll add padding to all the outfield walls, add a screen over the dugouts and make standing on the steps illegal, make pitchers wear helmets, ban head-first slides on steal attempts and add one of those orange safety bags to first base. MLB will start looking like special ed sports days with all the protective gear. http://www.legacydad.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/overprotective-parents.jpg
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I love this. I remember calling for it immediately after the Posey injury. sure, why not just use the hybrid icing rule from hockey so the base runner can just round third and go to the dugout. this is NOT a good thing

Why not just focus on the actual issue without drawing ridiculous comparisons?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Why the strawman? Why not just focus on the actual issue without drawing ridiculous comparisons? It's a slippery slope...
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Author Posted December 12, 2013 So the Catcher is allowed to block the plate and you can't knock him off it? The fording isn't finalized, but the baseline would belong to the runner and the catcher can't block the plate if he isn't in the act of fielding the ball or already has possession. If he tried to block without possession, he would be called for obstruction. Basically no difference than any other fielder who could choose to step in front of a runner at any other base to tag the runner and not worry about getting run over.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Why the strawman? Why not just focus on the actual issue without drawing ridiculous comparisons? the actual issue is society trying to nanny people even when they are adults. at some point the protective state has to leave people alone and let them live. there are already rules that actually stop most collisions. taking all "dangerous" play out of of baseball will kill the sport. I'm tired of people trying to bubble wrap the world to protect us from ourselves. so this picture is perfect. politically correct is sucking the living out of life.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Author Posted December 12, 2013 It's a slippery slope... There's no slope involved at all. Legislating intentional collisions at home does not equate to anything other than what it is.

Basically no difference than any other fielder who could choose to step in front of a runner at any other base to tag the runner and not worry about getting run over. the rule already applies to the catcher, but the interpretation/enforcement has always been different. they dont need a new rule. they need a decision on how the existing rule is to be applied.... or? edit: more players get serious injuries in collisions at second than at home plate. is that the next thing to change?
