Jays Verified Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 He also dumped one of the worst contracts in sports at the time and only had to eat what, 5M? I'm still amazed that actually happened. I read an article about how Reagins inquired about Wells. That was more Reagins doing something stupid than AA wizardry, I believe.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 It wasn't about the assets traded so much, but that Happ was clearly nothing more than a 5th starter, which are readily available every year in the offseason via free agency, there was no need to give up anything to acquire a SP of Happ's calibre. It's an example of AA fixating on a player(Happ was known to be coveted as a target in the Halladay trade) and having his judgement clouded as a result That's why I think it's stupid, but not as bad to change my opinion on him, whether in the positive or negative. He also dumped one of the worst contracts in sports at the time and only had to eat what, 5M? I'm still amazed that actually happened. Yeah I don't give him huge credit for this. @ the previous post , Reagins acquired on Wells because, from what I've read, Moreno gave him 24 hours to bring in Wells or he was fired. AA gets credit for being in the right place at the right time, but as a whole, I think it's a negative on AA for losing Napoli. Not because he should have kept him (again, TDA and JP) but because of similar to the Fister trade, he could have got more than Fatty Francisco.

It's not unlike AA inquiring about Dickey once he missed out on free agent pitching.

Both trades(the Happ trade and Fancisco/Napoli) are examples of AA not having proper valuations of players. This is not good for a GM.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 I hated the Happ trade, but I'm hoping AA can trade Happ for something decent given what some backend starters are getting in FA.

Wells was Wells and Dickey was coming off a Cy Young. These two situations are not comparable in any way.

Wells was Wells and Dickey was coming off a Cy Young. These two situations are not comparable in any way. What a dumb reply. It's documented (in a book no less) that after the Marlins trade, AA was hoping to get another pitcher through free agency and that he went to the Mets after the market dried up and asked them what he needed to give up to get Dickey. In other words, if something had happened in free agency the trade never happens. This is the similarity. Did I imply a similarity between the players? No I didn't so work on your reading comprehension before tossing out insults.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 It was dumn but I didn't include it because it's not something that can make or break a team. Nobody really major traded hands there (the biggest quarrel I had with that was losing Musgrove and Comer after using high draft picks on them the year prior). The Dickey and Napoli ones had immediate repercussions and immediate implications. If you're going to talk about trades that are just generally dumn, then yes the Happ one was retarded, and I've always thought the Lincoln one was real stupid as well. But trades like that won't affect my opinion about a GM. Oh, I remember the days when I thought AA was a half decent GM.

It's straight from AAs mouth he was working on trying to acquire Dickey at the winter meetings, while there were good FA starters on the market. Maybe just maybe that indicates that it wasn't an "ohh shiit, we're screwed let's do something stupid" moment, which is what you are implying by comparing it to us dumping Wells on the Angels. GMs have many balls in the air at the same time. Dickey was one of his top targets that offseason, so trading for him is not comparable to the Angels missing out on everyone and getting desperate - at all. Waiting to see what a pitcher like Sanchez was going to go for before making the trade doesn't mean he was backed into a corner. It's how any GM should have done it.
