Deadspin buys MLB Hall of Fame vote

The bigger problem here is that a BBWAA voter sold their vote. The BBWAA has not yet responded to Deadspin's post and it's unclear if they'll investigate to determine who sold their ballot. I think there's a pretty good chance it was someone who doesn't even cover baseball anymore -- plenty of BBWAA members cover other sports full-time -- and has little to lose by getting caught. I could be wrong though.

If that is indeed what happened, I suppose it could lead to the BBWAA changing their voting standards. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, mind you. It's unfortunate something like this would have happened to prompt those changes, however. Either way, change or no change, this is a black eye for a BBWAA and the Hall of Fame. Yes, it is only one vote, but hopefully a deserving player doesn't fall short of induction or worse, fall off the ballot because of the Deadspin vote..

 

Oh the sanctimony... It burns.

Love it...some greedy ******* wants to sell his vote then hides behind an excuse that the voting process is unethical or outdated. If you truly believe that, just rescind your right to vote. Or if you're being an opportunist, at least stand up and say, "hey yeah I put my vote up for sale, because I can get away with it".

if they didn't vote they'd just lose their vote. This makes way more of a statement.

 

Anything with compensation or some other type of personal benefit to the perpetrator always results in making less of a statement. This writer could easily go to Deadspin or somewhere else and offer his vote for free to the fans if this is how he truly felt. Nah, he just took the money then made this excuse after the fact. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm morally higher than this guy. I'd take the money too if the opportunity was there and the price was right. But don't go around making lame excuses like trying to expose how flawed this voting system is if you're going to do it for money.

The identity of the BBWAA member who sold his or her ballot to Deadspin is being withheld for now, but Marchman says that this voter, “will announce his/her name and motivations once his/her vote has been officially cast.” The voter will still cast the ballot his or herself, but will do so according to the instructions of Deadspin, which will, in turn, determine how to vote by polling its readership. Neither Deadspin nor Marchman has given any indication as to how the vote will be cast. Indeed, the site seems open to any approach, be it an honest attempt to cast a merit-based ballot, or any of a variety of protest votes, such as a ballot containing only the names of players associated with performance enhancing-drugs, or one that writes in Pete Rose or the like.

 

So, we will get to find out who it was.

So Dan Le Batard was the guy

 

His vote has (of course) now been taken away for the future

 

Should be some great debates over this in the media :)

I don't believe we know what will happen with his vote.

 

It shouldn't be taken away IMO. He didn't sell it, all he was really doing was asking some fans for help. Is that so bad? I don't think so.

That is a very peaches and cream way to paint it. Deadspin flat-out admits that the whole thing was to make a farce and a mockery of the Hall of Fame voting. When Le Betard decided to get on board with them, he accepted their motive as his own by proxy.

What did he say the reason was?

 

He said he was sick of the whole process and didn't want to be involved with all the preachiness that was coming out of the BBWA in the way they were voting.

They do realize that changes need to be made...but if it changes there will be much less talking about it. Talking about baseball (especially in January is so good for baseball). They are much better off not changing a thing, until people start boycotting the hall.

Absolutely disgusting how overrated Glavine/underrated Mussina is.

But Glavine has 300 wins! The ultimate milestone... you know it must be important because it has two zero digits!

 

Yep, it's a travesty. Mussina, Schilling, Kevin Brown were all better than Glavine. Somehow Glavine built up a reputation that even the new-school voters can't resist. Glavine is really Jack Morris with three extra years of average production tacked on. Curt Schilling was the big-game monster people think Jack Morris was. He should get all the votes from the old-school thinkers.

 

It would be cool if Schilling could go in with Randy Johnson next year. The duo posted 71.8 fWAR in their nine combined Diamondbacks years (including 35.1 from 2001-2 - Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels have only 18.7 in the past two years, and people think the Phillies have a great top-of-rotation). That's f***ed up. The best ace tandem... ever. They left Koufax and Drysdale in their dust.

 

But it's not going to happen. Not even the people who are supposed to be objective and smart (the internet-y voters) are on the Schilling/Mussina bandwagon. Neither have ever been connected to steroids and both have no-doubt statistical cases and memorable individual performances.
