Sportsnet wins NHL broadcast rights. What does this mean for the Jays?

Recommended Posts

So sportsnet (and CBS) bought the rights to the NHL. Sportsnet pretty much gets what TSN has right now in terms of hockey coverage. What does this mean for the Jays?

Probably means they will be pushed to the back burner once again on Sportsnet.

Lots of jays games on sn1.

Probably split both, same with NHL, so pretty much everyone has to buy SN1 as an addon. s***, SN2 wouldn't surprise me.

That probably means more blackouts :(

The Jays get huge ratings. They absolutely won't be "pushed to the backburner".

If anything, it shows how badly Rogers wants to be a dominant force in everything that it does. There is a lot of money available for this team to spend.

lol @ TSN. What are they going to fill their programming with? They don't even have that much Raptors coverage. The CFL? Disgusting.

I hope this means Rogers gets serious about their production values and hires technical people behind the scenes that know what they're doing, and analysts on camera that aren't complete morons (I'm looking at you Doug Maclean and Nick Kypreos).

I'll tell you who's REALLY happy - Jim Van Horne. Haha. His switch to Sportsnet FINALLY pays off after all this time.

Sucks for you guys. I have easier access to Jays games from North Eastern U.S. with mlb package then I do near Toronto.

When I travel in Southern Ontario I rarely can see a Jays game from a hotel. Often they have Sportnet or tsn or something but European soccer or some crap is on. Where is the game?? I have no f'n idea. (Keep in mind I have no idea what SN 1-8 or whatever is, last time I lived in Ontario there was TSN and only that).

It's amazing. When I travel to Ontario it's like... dang... on the road to Canada, won't be able to see the Jays for a week unless I f around with my IP address and search for streams (which I don't feel like doing want to turn on the TV and find them within 30 seconds).

In MA there is NESN, in NY there is YES, there is no situation where you would go on the road to a hotel (in NY/MA) and not have access to a game. It's very simple. Everyone knows where the game is, and if they have cable they get it every day, easily, without confusion, without an extra package.

If you don't have cable, you still ussually get a game once a week. I have a friend who refuses to buy cable... still actually uses dial up. And is able to follow his teams (radio) + once a week on TV the old fashioned way.

Rogers is evil. It's against the common man. This is why I would never be a lefty and am a Ron Paul righty. Call me crazy but something like Rogers could only exist in Canada... It's a little more laise faire in the states these guys have to serve the common people a little more.

And I'm rambling, just because last time I brought this up I had some lefties s*** on me. Cleveland is a dump, Boston is a dump, states sucks. Every time I drive through Toronto I'm attacked by 100 squeegy kids that the wonderful, loving, lefty Canadian system has produced. Squeegy kids and Rogers, that's why I hate lefties.

If you want me to convert to Lefty get rid of Rogers and squeegy kids then I will take it a bit more seriously.

I was going to presume this was wrong but instead looked it up.

You're right. CFL averages about 700,000 per game vs Jays 540,000.

I guess there is that whole 162 thing to consider

It doesn't mean anything for the Jays.

The only thing that matters for the Jays is not being the worst Toronto based sports team. Fix that and everything goes up.

For a league with an 18 game season, that's pretty terrible.

Yeah but you're comparing an entire schedule of CFL games to one MLB team so the difference isn't that great, maybe twenty games or so. There may be a few CFL games that aren't televised which would push the number up a little.

The audience is probably very different though. The CFL audience is probably more of a rotating cast depending on which cities are playing. Riders games probably skew the average something fierce since from what I hear the whole province of Saskatchewan basically shuts down for them.

That's true but the Argos actually average one of the highest ratings in the league, most of their games get more than 1mil viewers and a few weeks back where they had Raptors, NFL and Argos at the same exact time, the Argos still got close to 1 mil while the Raptors got like 50k and the NFL got like 300k. I think it was middle of the week.

Ratings are the reason why TSN bought the rights for the CFL and are pumping some money into the teams that should make all of them profitable going forward.

To think the Jays might not be impacted is a bit short sighted. When SN already has commitments to the Jays and to major junior hockey on their regional networks, the spring when the chl playoffs, memorial cup, nhl playoffs and Jays are in full swing all at the same time, one of those properties is bound to get bumped to a channel that might not be as widely available.

I also wonder how much more Rogers is going to start charging for their sports packages with all this new, live programming, which of course will be picked up for by the consumer.

I wonder if they'll just end up gobbling up TSN...

758k to be exact...81 games next year plus 5 playoff games... the grey cup did 4.5 mil so that's like 6 games...and the west semi final drew 1.9 mil..which was more than hockey night in Canada that weekend and the eastern final drew 1.7 mil....

all advertisers care about are viewers...the more viewers you have the more they will pay......the jays at 540K per game was up substantially from 2010 when they drew an average audience of 437K per game.

The only games in the CFL not televised are the preseason games...

It's weird. TSN, which is owned by ESPN, which is owned by Disney, should certainly not have been outbid for the NHL deal when it's the holy grail of sports broadcasting in Canada. They're basically left with the CfL, which only works for 2 or 3 nights a week for 5 months a year, and regional rights for some Leafs and Jets games, neither of which is going to sustain the network. Losing the NHL is a huge blow. They also don't have the Olympics anymore.

Were I the brass at TSN I'd be gearing up to put a huge bid on the Jays rights next time they came up as a big FU to Rogers(maybe not even to win, but to at least cost Rogers more money) start thinking of ways to get the Raptors and build them up like they did the CFL, which they really did do a great job with. Without the NHl, they're on the way to irrelevance for a huge chunk of the year

TSN is a joint ownership with 80% ownership by Bell media and 20% ownership by ESPN Inc.....they also show lots of curling..lol

numbers rose the last few years due some renewed excitement....it's funny...people out here talk about the jays like people in Toronto talk about the CFL....yeah...I used to watch the jays...not much anymore...it's been so long since they had a winner.....if they actually made the playoffs and or even competitive throughout the year....their viewership has a lot of room to grow...

Huh? Rogers owns the Jays so "gearing up to put a huge bid on the Jays rights" will do nothing.

TSN can hype up the Raptors all they want, Rogers wont care since Rogers and Bell both own 33.3% of the Raptors. It is in the best interest of Rogers for the Raptors to do well and make a lot of money.
