jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 I am uber impressed that you guys are getting all these shout outs. I know the content is great (as I've read it all), but its a different accolade that you got your brand 'out there' so quickly. Agreed. For a blog that's only been around for what.. a few weeks?. This is impressive. That's why i brought up the fact that the message board link doesn't show up on my phone, tablet or work computer. It's a moot point for us who know how to get here, but for the people who appreciate these articles are the kinds of posters we want on the board. The link to message board needs to always be clear. I can only see it on my laptop at home. But yeah, great work guys....love the blog.

ace3113 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 I like Yarbrough quite a bit, nice article. Thanks. I couldn't think of a title that would continue my B movie theme. I thought of going western with 5 Guns West. But that might have been a little too obscure, so I went with obvious over esoteric. As for Yarbrough I've liked him quite a bit since college. A lot of people questioned me putting him ahead of Renda in my draft report in 2012 but I stand by that. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/5/22/3035798/mlb-draft-2012-college-second-basemen I'm hoping the power spike is for real, and at the same time that he can regain the contact rates that he had in his pro debut. It's probably a lot to ask for no? Maybe we can get him for a minor league reliever. lol

admin Site Manager Posted November 30, 2013 Author Posted November 30, 2013 ECJF made a good point, comment on the articles, it will get more people involved and they will leave comments too. I'm going to try and get us listed through Google News soon, and they will be doing a manual review of the site, so if they see comments and an active blog, it'll only help us.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Nice article Nik! Both Nik and I weigh in on the Hughes singing here! http://www.breakingblue.ca/2013/12/01/phil-hughes-signs-with-the-twins/ My only suggestion here is that you make it more obvious that this is three different writers. Just a small sub-heading works
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Great article Nik, my only criticism is the boring excel graphs but, good read. What program do you prefer? I've used R a little bit for graphing but I don't really remember most of the language. I should probably refamiliarize myself with R.

Just a small sub-heading works We were talking last night about some sort of line break. I threw some squiggles in there but they are probably too subtle

Part 1 of xxFIP! http://www.breakingblue.ca/2013/12/03/one-estimator-to-rule-them-all-xxfip-part-1-xk/ This skill of framing should be attributed to the catcher, not the pitcher.[/Quote] I can't recall if I've asked you this before, but what evidence is there that pitchers don't influence the calling of balls/strikes as well?
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Cool article... just one comment, You have the lower values highlighted for the K%RMSE vs xK%RMSE but the row for N = 116 is mis-bolded. .0354 vs .0345
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Goddamit, thanks that's even more in my favour lol. I thought that would make you happy
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I mentioned it in TIPS. It may be that some pitchers do. Mark Buerhle an Casey Janssen take advantage of umpires by always throwing just off the plate. David Price uses Jose Molina to his advantage as well, but the majority of pitchers see little correlation year to year Yeah, I suspect there's a lot of pitchers that do (I remember Hentgen absolutely raping hitters 6 inches or more off the plate). I'd also love to see the difference in borderline strikes between stars and rookies. It just seems like you are making a very big assumption unless there is very strong evidence to support it.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Yes again though, these pitchers would do terribly if Ryan Doumit, John Buck, or Chris Ianetta were catching them. Well they'd do worse no question, but my point isn't whether or not framing exists (it clearly does), but rather whether it is appropriate to try to exclude it's effects from the pitcher or whether the pitcher has a non-trivial amount of control over it as well.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 I would say that at least 75% or more should be attributed to the catcher, and it would change by pitcher. I think it is better to give the catcher full credit if we have to give it all to one of them. This sounds like an interesting area to research further.

8D Verified Member Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 downward plane towards the plate i think. his short stature doesn't help him vs. pitchers who are taller and thus a more downward plane from release point to the plate.

That makes sense. I was confused by the use of "natural."
