Rasmus would intrigue alot of teams, but i think they would be looking for talent that's more controllable.

The Cubs are probably my favorite NL team and this would be a funny way to see them stick it to the Cardinals.

What is the actual rumor here? Trading Gump and putting Gose in CF = not smart

I agree.

Rasmus is a solid starter (~4 WAR) and Gose is a wait and see guy. So far Gose is a 4th OF but has tools that could turn him into a solid starter. Rasmus is gold but he's not controllable for several years.

btw BJ Upton got tons of dollars

Theo texted back "LOL" to a proposal once.

I figure he'd do the same with anything for Castro not involving Sanchez/Stroman.

what's so great about castro....other than that he has a controllable contract...

I hope we don't trade rasmus...he seems to like it here...I think we can get a reasonable extension.....gose is never going to be a good player...I hope we get rid of him..

Omg just sign a f***ing starter. This is just awful asset management.

Because... you know... it's just that easy.

That he has an above average bat and manageable glove at a premium position and he's 23/24, not to mention durable.

Yeah. Rasmus is one of my favourite players on the team. Doesn't cry about balls and strikes and plays hard. Wish we had more anti dramatic guys like him.

Future rajai Davis

lol what? In the sense their both 4th Of's? Other then speed.....very different skill sets. Gose is an elite defender who can't hit. Rajai is a poor defender with plus speed who hit's left handed pitching at a respectable rate.

he's no defensive wizard.....and he was anything but an above average bat last year...

Nothing really besides that we have supposedly made a package offer of young players for Samardzija. I've been reading that the cubs want young starting pitching, which of course they do.

If I had to make a guess it would be one of Sanchez/Stroman and Nolin and maybe a few other pieces.

if they give up one of sanchez or stroman plus others for 2 years of samardzija I'm going to be pissed....i'd rather sign bartolo colon for a year or two and keep the prospects..

lol @ Gose ever hitting .284 (let alone OBP'ing .284).

Gomez-Gose first 2 season

Gomez - 21 years old - 139 PA .232/.288/.304, .261 wOBA

Gomez - 22 years old - 614 PA .258/.296/.360, .291 wOBA

Gose - 21 years old -189 PA .223/.303/.319, .280 wOBA

Gose - 22 years old -153 PA .259/.283/.408. .300 wOBA

Feel free to re evaluate your trade proposal then

Even though I'm not overly thrilled with Samardzija as a target if they are willing to trade him fairly cheap ( eg for some of our lesser prospects )

I wouldn't mind it. Cubs might take a flyer on Gose, don't know what they think about our other expendable parts ( eg JPA, some middle relievers, lesser prospects ). My point is I don't think Samardzija is enough of an upgrade on Rogers, Happ, Stroman etc etc to warrant weakening our main assets in any way to get him. If that means I'm undervaluing him so be it, the Jays ultimately make that call. And I'm even more nervous about them spending a fair bit of money on Nolasco, which could mean I'd warm up more to getting this guy instead. Bottom line I'm not sure bringing in lesser starters and hoping they'll improve our team seems off base to me ( we have plenty of #3-#5 type pitchers ).

Hanigan I think is being overvalued on this forum, the Reds don't want him and there is no shortage of catchers in the league. Again, if he's available fairly cheap I'd consider him, especially if we can unload a contract. Would Santos be enough and what are the Reds needing ?

I don't disagree that getting a fairly modest catcher is the right move though if we spend our money elsewhere.

Not sure where the trading synergies are here unless the market value of these guys is limited.

Really? I think Samardzija is a huge upgrade over Happ/Rogers. Stroman should start the year in AAA, so I'll leave him out of this for now.

Samardzija has been worth 6 WAR over his last 2 seasons, while Rogers is a long reliever that can spot start (spot start one too many times in 2013) and Happ is a similar situation. I would gladly take Samardzija over Rogers and Happ, although it would be tough pill to swallow giving up Sanchez or Stroman.

I've seen a lot of National League starter's with similar history to him blow up in the American League, that is why I'm not too keen on him. I don't see him as being much of an upgrade still; he's not going to change the Jays outlook much. My original premise way back was they need EITHER a quality starter or forget it just beef up the offence to a top three and pray some of our big maybe pitchers have nice seasons. This Cub pitcher doesn't fit either strategy. Its like settling for something that's guaranteed to be a mediocre .500 team going nowhere. Of course, that's not the case if we aren't giving up anything of great value back.

Would it blow your mind if either Rogers or Happ was better then this guy next season ? And one further point, Stroman is the kind of guy who might make a major league impact in 2014. Other teams have had guys like him do so, it might be our turn. To give up Stroman at this point when we lack quality starters would be lunacy for the Jays.

Happ hasn't brought nothing to the Jays.

I hope you die a slow horrifically painful death.

Double negatives. The f***ing worst.

Should I have said "Happ has brought something to the jays "?

Yes. Too late, my eyes are bleeding.

You know how some people on this forum hate "I could care less" or "Oscar Tavares?" Double negatives. They grind my gears.

I noticed you used $9M/win in this article and $7.5M per in an earlier one. Did you stumble across something that led you to change it up?

Chris and Nox have both said that 9M is more corrector, but I haven't read their source material or anything.

I have no idea what numbers to actually use. Fangraphs still uses things closer to 5, I think. I've used 5, 7.5, and 9 so far.

I've actually written an entire post about value calculation questions in order to kind of crowdsource an ideal method, but I'm not sure if it would get enough attention to be worth posting yet.

It seems to me that 5 fits fairly nicely with the WAR values we see on Fangraphs (and the contracts that are given out). If other organizations have different replacement levels than what Fangraphs has or uses a different formula, it would make sense that they might have different numbers. Since we don't have those other numbers, I like the idea of using the two that we know are designed to work together.

With that said, I'd also be totally on board with all of us crowdsourcing our own WAR formula, replacement level, and numbers and using those.

Damn, I was hoping you had found something new. It would be nice to have a reasonably reliable estimate, because the difference between 5 and 9 is kind of massive.

It's definitely something that I want/need some more information on

If AA trades away either Stroman or Sanchez, he's dumb. Both of them are closest thing we got for an ace right now.

The problem is we'd be trading either kid who is much younger and cheaper and could probably over the course of given a 150-175IP season in the majors put up a season not too far off what Samardzija would.

Short term gain for long term pain.

It's very depressing when our target at catcher who is coming off a year where he hit .198 and had a .567 OPS and is 33 years old and likely won't hit for a .700 OPS again is what is getting people excited. The 4th place Yankees get McCann - the fifth place Blue Jays get? May as well bring Zaun out of retirement.
