A guy I know genuinely thinks Rajai Davis could hit 30 home runs in a full

season.

I give up.

He has massive power in BP. I've seen it a few times. But at this stage of his career if its not showing up in games, it never will

There should be Type B compensation. Like a 1/10 contract that comes with 2nd/3rd rounder. Would be good with players like Johnson that are legit loss. Guess would be complictated figuring who should gets offered what thoough

I remember Murphy talking about how he was going to unleash Rajai's power. Davis proceeded to have a 50 point drop in OBP with no extra power whatsoever.

He was certainly swinging harder. LOL

That trade looks so bad today.

We gave up Alvarez, Escobar, Hech, Nicolino, Marisnick, Mathis, DeSclafani for half a season of s*** Boni, 16 s***** starts from Johnson, Reyes and Buehrle who aging veterans on s*** contracts. And Buck, if he really counts for anything (not).

You should be banned for even bringing this up. I was starting to forget about what we all had to give up.

Great news that they didn't QO Johnson. Gives me some renewed hope that AA can think rationally and not hang onto his mistakes hoping they can rebound. Should be interesting to see what kind of money Johnson attracts in the real world versus the guessing here.

I can't pretend to have any knowledge of Johnson's medical records. Obviously he has injury history, but this year was the culmination of a bunch of minor injuries, not major issues. If Johnson at present date is as healthy as one in his situation can be then the Jays should do everything they can to resign Johnson to a one year 9 to 10 mil deal and save the money to sign a catcher. If you don't even make an offer(assuming his health is reasonable) it just shows that you completely misjudged the talent in the first place, which means AA should be fired. I think he should be fired anyways. Johnson is going to pitch a lot better next year...even looking at last year he was one of the most unlucky pitchers in baseball(not saying he didn't pitch poorly)...his upside risk reward is quite attractive on a one year deal. AA is more likely to spend 14 mil per year for 4 years on a pitcher with far greater risk reward and on a guy who will never be a number one vs going after tanaka who is a risk but significant upside..

Option one would be to go all in on Tanaka. Option 2 I would do my best to sign Johnson for 1 year 9 mil...I'd do my best to trade happ and izturis for scrap...you obviously can't get rid of Romero..but it would be nice if you could..and I'd put all that into the most glaring issue of a catcher...you need someone who is decent defensively and a veteran who can call games...personally with our budget I would be after Ruiz....Roll the dice moving McGowan to the rotation and see where you are at with drabek, Hutchinson, Romero, Stroman..etc....You don't need those guys at the beginning of the year, but injuries will happen and you should be able to find one or two to fill the back end of your rotation....you need to have some of your internal guys to come through your system. We aren't the Yankees.

You are correct there is no way for us to know unless we are the Jays doctors. It would not surprise me if Dickey has a good season, that Stroman cracks the team, and one of the other guys ( eg Morrow/Hutch ) pitches ok the first half. I still think Rogers is fine as a 5th starter ( or first fill on an injury ) and Happ was actually a pretty good long relief guy in the past ( if Gibbons ever let these guys do it ). Add all that up and what the Jays need is one reliable healthy starter, but they shouldn't panic and do a huge overpay if they can get a great hitter with the same money.

If we add one decent starter, I think the pitching will be better then expected and if the injury gang goes down again we could do a midseason trade to fill one void if our bats keep us in contention. The economics of pitchers at this point could be scary expensive, but I'd be interested in what E. Santana costs, or a couple of the older vets like Tim Hudson might cost on a short deal. Again, I'd only take someone with a really healthy arm and I'm not sure what the status of all these guys are.

Another possibility is try Cecil as a starter again ( I like that possibility more then McGowan ). Last possibility is they don't get anywhere with acquiring pitchers, the doctors tell them that most of their injured pitchers are unlikely to be good, and at that point I'm sure its Bautista for a starter.

ESPN's Buster Olney writes that the Royals "want to work something out with Josh Johnson."

Johnson had a brutal 6.20 ERA in 16 starts with the Blue Jays this year, but he's been a frontline pitcher in the past and the Royals are hoping to get him on a low-risk, one-year deal. Johnson was not given a qualifying offer from Toronto, so signing him does not require the forfeiture of a top draft pick. Because of all these factors, he is likely drawing interest from multiple teams.

Decent place to pitch, decent playoff chance, not the worst option for Johnson but you have to figure he wants to face the pitcher again. He'll probably just use the Royals for leverage.

he'll probably go there on a cut rate deal and win 18 games.

He probably ends up out performing every SP in the Jays rotation. That's just the way s*** flows.

yeap...

I really hope AA doesn't sell Stroman or Sanchez. I can see those two being the top 2 in the jays rotation in 2015.

Josh Johnson Narrows Choice To Three Or Four NL Teams

By Steve Adams [November 19 at 2:31pm CST]

2:31pm: MLBTR's Tim Dierkes (via Twitter) hears that Johnson's finalists are all NL teams, some likely on the west coast.

1:45pm: Josh Johnson has narrowed his decision down to three or four teams, agent Matt Sosnick tells Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, and the Pirates are among the finalists. A deal could be done "in the short-term," Sawchik adds, reminding that Johnson is seeking to rebuild his value on a one-year deal (Twitter links). Last night, Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Johnson reached out to the Padres and Giants early in the offseason to inform the teams that they were his first choice.

Johnson, 30 in January, posted a bloated 6.20 ERA with 9.2 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 81 1/3 innings. Sabermetric stats such as xFIP (3.58) and SIERA (3.73) feel that Johnson was victim to some bad luck, and his .356 BABIP and 18.5 percent homer-to-flyball ratio would back that line of thinking up.

Of course, the bigger issue with Johnson is his health. Johnson pitched through tendonitis in his knee all season and also hit the disabled list due to a forearm strain and triceps inflamation this season before undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow in early October. Johnson is one of the game's most talented arms but has only topped 200 innings in a season once, and in fact has only thrown more than 100 innings four times in a Major League season.

The Pirates are a logical suitor for his services as they've recently enjoyed success in buying low on talented pitchers coming off down seasons. Francisco Liriano, A.J. Burnett and Mark Melancon have all enjoyed tremendous success in a black and gold jersey. Johnson didn't receive a qualifying offer and therefore won't require his new team to surrender a draft pick.

Good riddance. As much as I think JJ is going to bounce back, this rotation needs a durable innings eater more than anything.

San Francisco would be a great place for him. Pitching in the NL West, in that spacious park. The Giants rotation could be one of the best next season with Cain, Bumgarner, Lincecum, Hudson and Johnson. Just filthy.

It's nice when the incredibly obvious things in baseball actually come to fruition. I think nearly everyone expected JJ to sign with SF, SDP, or PIT on a 1 year deal. Surely another NL team if not one of those three.

I like how the JJ camp explicitly reached out to SD and SF.

Weird, though, I was under the impression that SD has a glut of pitching already, especially with the returns of Luebke and Wieland.

They actually have a very nice rotation if Johnson signs and stays healthy.

Cashner

Johnson

Ross

Stults

Kennedy

Erlin/Smith/Luebke/Wieland

I think they have just as nice a rotation without him. Healthy, I think Luebke is a better pitcher anyway and Wieland can probably perform at a similar level for less money.

It sounds almost like you own these guys in a dynasty league or something.

Really though, I think JJ is a great fit there. The guy has like 3-4 win upside, and if he's signing on a reasonable deal I think they're absolutely better off with him. If they really want Luebke or Wieland in the rotation right away maybe they can sell high on Stults.

I'd be saying that even if I didn't own them, but I do agree he'd make the team better. Just think he's more needed somewhere else.
