flafson Verified Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 He will be even more fragile than Morrow. I hope he proves me wrong though. I get the feeling that AA is working on pitchers depth, keep all the guys that suppose to come back from injury at Buffalo and then when our starters go down, we have lots of good arms to call upon.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 every pitcher should approach the season this way conditioning wise.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Happy to hear this but not holding my breath
Convo Verified Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Lol this organization has gone into desperation mode
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 A rotation including McGowan, Morrow and Johnson would be laughably dangerous. The three together probably can't throw 200 innings in a season...
JPArenshitia Verified Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 oh wow great news!.....so what the hell was his approach then, all the previous seasons??? big deal.
Errorcebia Verified Member Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 AA has already slotted him into the #3 spot in the rotation, just like he did with Henderson Alvarez after one month of big league ball. He will be injured again in ST and we will be in panic mode yet again.

They combine to co-win the Cy Young award.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I'm thinking this is more about AAA depth than a guaranteed major league spot He doesn't have options left. He'll be on this team next year, but whether it's as a starter, long man, or regular reliever who knows. If we do in fact decide to fill that 5th starter spot from within and Dustin is healthy coming out of spring, why not give it to him. If he goes down you call up someone else (Stroman, Drabek, etc). We should have decent depth next year. It's very important to get a high end arm for the top of the rotation if we do this however.
Caper Verified Member Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 I'd have Rogers and DMac splitting the 5th starter role. Meaning I wouldn't really say diffinitively whose job it is.... Mainly because I don't think DMac could ever handle the workload... But hey... He's almost going through a full year without major shoulder problems.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 IF hes our 5th starter next season, this doesn't seem like a great idea Our starters will be Buehrle, Dickey, someone they sign hopefully, Morrow and McGowan. As long as he's healthy coming out of camp he's the starter...how is this a bad thing..he just pitched another flawless inning..he had to get 4 outs tonight because of the error. There are worse idea's than having a guy who throws the ball that well being your starter....that doesn't mean you count on him...you have drabek, hutch, rogers, happ....but why start any of those guys over McGowan if McGowan breaks camp and he's healthy. He's the most talented pitcher..he should start. If he breaks down...move down your list.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Really sick of him tbh..kinda wish we just got rid of him
Caper Verified Member Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Nolin Romero Drabek DMac Rogers Happ Stromin Hutchison Redmond Surely out of all those bums, some one or 2 of those guys have to pleasantly surprise next season.............. Jesus.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 IF hes our 5th starter next season, this doesn't seem like a great idea I wouldn't guarantee him a spot in the rotation. Let him battle it out with other candidates for that No. 5 spot. Regardless, prepping him for the rotation in ST is probably the best thing to do regarding McGowan. Worse case scenario, you stick him in long relief. I don't have a problem with McGowan as the No. 5 starter, though he needs to prove he's healthy and he needs to have a very good spring. As well, the Blue Jays better have a lot of depth in the minors who could step in, which it seems like they will with guys like Stroman, Nolin, Drabek, Redmond etc. There's more upside with McGowan as a No. 5 than Happ. Though my expectations on McGowan aren't that high - don't think he'll make more than 10-15 starts.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 Though my expectations on McGowan aren't that high - don't think he'll make more than 10-15 starts. Even if he was perfectly healthy, it would be hard to ask him to go 200 innings when he hasn't thrown more than 60 in 5 years. 20 starts is probably about all you could ask.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 The point is you can't count on him to be a starter. You need to have a set list of 5 that doesn't include McGowan. If someone gets hurt or struggles maybe McGowan can enter the conversation. You have to have a list of 7 or 8......but what are you going to do..have McGowan come through spring training...if he's healthy say...You have the most talent and are throwing the ball the better than anyone in the rotation, but we're not going to start you because we think you will get injured? No...you play the kid...if he get's hurt you move on down the list...when you're thin in terms of talent in the rotation as it is, you have to use your best arms. The same naysayers are the guys who said he would not get back to the team prior to this season starting and they said if he did come back he would be a shadow of his former self. Well he did make it back and he is still throwing the ball outstandingly well...better than ever really and he has not had a shoulder injury this year. He's got the magic delabar program beans now and if he could stay healthy for an entire year he could be a special starter given his low salary and the potential value he could bring. I'm not saying don't go sign a starter or two in the offseason...but the free agency crop doesn't look that exciting and I'm not sure what the jays are willing to spend.

Jesus. I think a few of those guys could be back end starters, in the AL East, next season. That being said I don't think the Jays should fill the last two spots with back-end guys. IMO they need to bring in a front-end pitcher. Let the rest of the depth guys fight over the fifth spot. The rest will get a call-up if they are performing well later in the year when injuries hit.
