Sorrow Verified Member Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I'd have no issues with Goins on the bench next season. Sub him late at 2B for the D and having a left handed bat is never a bad thing. There's no way he should be starting.

I'd be confident throwing that arm and range at 2B, SS and 3B. Looks like he isn't going to hit a lick though and I'd hate to see him starting every day, even when injuries hit though.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 He truly is Johnny Mac 2.0 Yep. That might be OK if we had a good performing LF for once, and a catcher who wasn't terrible.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 He truly is Johnny Mac 2.0 Goins' bat is better,in every way. Having a good night against a solid lefty tonight btw.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Goins wRC+ = 56, ZiPS ROS = 61, Steamer ROS = 63 McDonald's career wRC+ = 56 Yes, Goins is clearly on another level. Lol..I'm sure glad we are comparing players with similar MLB service time.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 You're free to pull stupid comments from your rectum, but you're going to get called out on them. Stating that "Goins' bat is better [than Mac's],in every way" is a stupid comment and I called you out on it. Now we can both go about our evenings. How is that a stupid comment you f***ing goof. Goins has had all but four f***ing weeks in the show and you've already come to the conclusion that Mac's bat is better? You got some serious f***ing problems if you think Mac's short armed hack swings are any indication of a better bat than a batter that has gap power to all fields with better fundamentals in Goins. "Every way a stupid comment and i called you out on it" GFY you egotistical ass wipe.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 No. Your stupidity is showing again. I'm not the one that made the definitive statement as to which of the two is better. You did. There is zero support for that statement with more merit than "he looks better to me lol" , which is why I called you out on it. So making a "projection" on a player's bat based purely on fundamentals is stupid? I'll f***ing guarantee you that if Goins gets the same opportunity Mac had,he'll put up better offensive numbers. He has even gotten his feet wet in the bigs yet. Also,Goins is the better defender.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Oh Jesus, I just read the part about Goins having gap power to all fields. Apparently the 25-year old with the 0.111 ISO in AAA is Manny Machado now. Jesus Christ. Compared to Mac he is. That is what we are talking about here, right?
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 You're entitled to your opinion, you just passed it off as a definitive statement rather than an opinion. There is really nothing to suggest that Goins will be a significantly better hitter, so the burden of proof is definitely on you. I'm more than comfortable in saying that Goins will be a better offensive player than Mac.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 You have a serious man crush on Goins bro Seriously, not really. The kid is going to turn out to be a solid MLB bench player.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Time will tell. Funny now on how BTS has crossed into the land of using Mac as a barometer.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 wat "Funny story: McDonald's career ISO was 0.91. Goins is at 0.75 and ZiPS and Steamer have him in the 80s. So no, he's not Manny Machado compared to Mac." If you are going to pull out stats and shed Goins in this manner based on a microscopic SS, then you have crossed the threshold.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 The threshhold of humoring another poster's comparison of two fringy replacement-level talents? Two fringy players..agreed. Bench importance to a successful team, very relevant. Goins wins over Mac in that regard. No point in bashing the f*** out of a potentially important piece to a successful Blue Jays team. Would i love for us to land an upper tier starting middle infielder? Obviously.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Any idea if Goins was able to secure a spot at winter ball? I'm still hopeful that with some more playing time, his bat will stabilize up towards average numbers.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 His poor bat isn't due to a lack of playing time. I didn't say it was, i was hoping it would stabilize up with more playing time.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Clearly we are going to have to rely on trades and free agent signings to keep a major league level caliber lineup going over the next few years. Hopefully the farm can at least produce on the pitching side.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 I didn't say it was, i was hoping it would stabilize up with more playing time. Lifetime .270 hitter with no power in the minors. That's not good. We can't realistically expect much at the major league level from his hitting. If he becomes even league average (.265-.270 BA) it would be a small miracle.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Damn, I missed some fun in here last night. Are we still seriously hoping on Goins' bat?
flafson Verified Member Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Damn, I missed some fun in here last night. Are we still seriously hoping on Goins' bat? I'm a hopeful guy, what can i say.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 I miss this thread... Now that Goins has power, he should be playing more!!!
Caper Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Author Posted September 29, 2013 I know his bat doesn't play... But man does he solidify that defense.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Ryan Goins has bat speed for days! I think he's shown enough in the six weeks to strongly consider him making the 25 man next year. He plays above average defense in both middle infield positions and is hitting a little better so far than his projections, although his BB% could increase. It's a no brainer imo that Goins starts the year with the Jays and Kawasaki in Buffalo, assuming AA finds a starting second baseman. Again i say i'd have no problem with Goins be our starting second baseman if AA can address and significantly upgrade the offense with a C, a good right handed bat to platoon with Lind and possibly a left fielder (Melky is done imo). A #1 or #2 and a solid #3 in the SP rotation and we'll be fine (easier said than done). Trade Dickey back to the NL (Dodgers,Giants?) Bat speed? Pillar has some serious bat speed. If / when he starts to figure it out, he could develop into a solid MLB player. He's hit everywhere else he's played.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Fun fact: he's actually hit right at his projections. ZiPS (U): 64 wRC+ Steamer (U): 64 wRC+ Ryan Goins: 64 wRC+
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Minimum he is back up middle infielder. He can play SS or 2B for extended periods based on his defense alone. Big upgrade defensively over Kawasaki, Izturis and Boni (Reyes to for that matter)
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 He can play SS or 2B for extended periods based on his defense alone. Ugh, not this again. Goins: -6.2 Offense Goins: 5.1 Defense
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Fun fact: he's actually hit right at his projections. ZiPS (U): 64 wRC+ Steamer (U): 64 wRC+ Ryan Goins: 64 wRC+ Goins is at 70 wRC+
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Yup... weird that Fangraphs hasn't updated their table stats yet. It's usually done at 3 am or so. GD also used the (U) projections, which are projected end-of-season. It's the last day of the season, so just about every player has "actually hit right at his projections" lol. God damnit it's too early for this s***
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Does everyone think AA has the ability to upgrade all the positions ? Catcher , Starter ( or two) Left field . and 2nd base. Surely we aren't holding our breath on Melky or has he found a new Balco. Goins minor league #,s speak for themselves so I,m actually surprised he is hitting as well as he is . Best we should expect is a 670 something OPS . I look at how brutal our defense was at 2nd base and in Left Field and then look at where we can best improve production and defense . Left Field is a much higher priority than 2nd base and easier to improve in the FA market .
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Having Goins at AAA for depth would be the best but the f***ing guy at 2nd better be able to play defense on turf . When your Rotation is the 2nd worst in Baseball and your defense is just as bad you need to fix both . Fixing the lack of production and the dismal defense in LF is a lot easier than fixing 2nd base. Both positions were an embarrassment
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Thank you Captain Obvious.
