Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I could definitely see us on Garza / Tanaka hard. I hope we go hard after this route first and the trade route second.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Doesn't sound like AA wants to part with JP, but then again, would he really say that even if he did? Probably not. AA about JPA and TDA “Both of their bats are good enough, and big enough, that they’re everyday players,” Anthopoulos said. “If Travis doesn’t get as many reps behind the plate, that’s fine. His bat is just a unique bat. He has a chance to be a middle-of-the-order impact bat.” If both men can fit into the lineup as DH and catcher respectively on different nights
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 AA about JPA and TDA Why would you post this. Why???

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I suspect we may go position players early this year (depending on the players available of course)
ace3113 Verified Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I suspect we may go position players early this year (depending on the players available of course) Could certainly happen. The word at present is that the high school pitching class is bananas, but a lot can change in 9 months. I really like Schwarber's bat and would love if we had a chance at him. Not sure on his position, but he's the best most advanced bat available. I also like position guys like Michael Chavis, Michael Gettys, Nick Gordon, Derek Hill, and Jacob Gatewood. Lots to like in this class.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Brady Aiken and Touki Toussaint eh? I could get behind that. Hill though :3
BabbaGanoush Verified Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Isn't Gareth Morgan eligible for this upcoming draft? I keep hearing about how he might be the highest Canadian ever.
BabbaGanoush Verified Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I doubt he goes as high as 4th overal. Unless you count Jameson Tallion who went 2nd overal but is American born. I guess you could include Tallion now. He has committed to Team Canada and said he will remain loyal. His parents are both proud Canadians living in America. Getting back to Morgan he will likely be drafted in the back end of the first round. But hes thhe type of guy who could move up a lot right before the draft. Hes already very gifted physically. That will work in his favour. Ya I saw a photo of the dude, he's an absolute beast. Like 6'5 and 220 or something crazy like that age 17.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Morgan is gonna be a stud, got my eye on him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Final official draft order and notes, from MLBTR. 2 lines bolded by me. 2014 MLB Draft Order By Charlie Wilmoth [september 29 at 8:59pm CST] With the 2013 MLB regular season now over, here's the current order for the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft. First, some notes: •The draft order is determined in reverse order of record. If two or more teams have the same record, the tie-breaker is 2012 record, with the team with the worse 2012 record getting the higher pick. That's why, for example, the Cubs (61-101 in 2012) pick ahead of the Twins (66-96 in 2012), even though the two teams had the same record this season. •Notably, the Athletics and the Braves had identical 96-66 records in 2013 and 94-68 records in 2012. MLB.com's Jim Callis confirms in an email that the next tie-breaker is 2011 record, and the A's were worse that year, so they will pick before the Braves. •The winner of Monday's Wild Card tie-breaker between the Rangers and Rays (which counts as a regular-season game) will get the No. 23 overall pick, while the loser will take No. 22. •The Jays have pick No. 11 in addition to their usual first-round pick, since they did not sign 2013 No. 10 overall pick Phil Bickford. The No. 11 pick is a protected pick for the Jays. •Teams may have to forfeit first-round draft picks when they sign free agents who have been extended qualifying offers, so this list is subject to change later this season. The first eleven picks of this year's draft, however, are protected, so those teams would lose a second-round pick for signing a player who has received and rejected a qualifying offer. Without further ado, here's the order. 1. Astros 2. Marlins 3. White Sox 4. Cubs 5. Twins 6. Mariners 7. Phillies 8. Rockies 9. Blue Jays 10. Mets 11. Blue Jays (for failing to sign 2013 No. 10 pick Phil Bickford) 12. Brewers 13. Padres 14. Giants 15. Angels 16. Diamondbacks 17. Orioles 18. Yankees 19. Royals 20. Nationals 21. Reds 22. Rangers or Rays 23. Rangers or Rays 24. Indians 25. Dodgers 26. Tigers 27. Pirates 28. Athletics 29. Braves 30. Red Sox 31. Cardinals
BabbaGanoush Verified Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 They better make good use of this draft position and sign a free agent who got a qualifying offer...If he makes the team better of course.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 They better make good use of this draft position and sign a free agent who got a qualifying offer...If he makes the team better of course. They had a protected pick last year and didn't so I'm not holding my breath. AA saying yesterday they're likely to look at trade market to fill holes. Come on AA, please try to lure a good free agent catcher. Spend the $$, save the roster this time.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Caveat: Unless he plans to trade for Joe Mauer or Yadier Molina... Which he's not. So lure a free agent. Please.

Why does AA like trading so much... Does he feel a player isn't any good if he doesn't give up a ton of good prospects for him?

Does he feel a player isn't any good if he doesn't give up a ton of good prospects for him? Seriously though I think it's more about overpaying in $$$ and also about ability to attract players to Toronto. He has admitted that it's a problem with our crappy track record over the last 20 years. Good players don't want to come to a loser. It's a catch 22. Good players will help make the team a winner. But it's hard to get them here when you're a loser. The positive note as he's said is that once a player is here, they seem to have an easy time getting them to stay.

So instead of overpaying free agents. He over pays(prospect wise) in trades for over paid players...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 So instead of overpaying free agents. He over pays(prospect wise) in trades for over paid players... That's the irony of it isn't it? He never would have given Jose Reyes that contract as a free agent 2 off seasons ago. But last off season he trades assets to acquire him with that contract.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 Why does AA like trading so much... Does he feel a player isn't any good if he doesn't give up a ton of good prospects for him? Beeston and Gillick added Winfield and Morris in the off-season before '92, in '93 they signed Paul Molitor and Dave Stewart. As much as AA is in charge, Beeston is steering the ship. We know there was funds to add at the deadline. We also know that payrolls are trending upwards across baseball. There were some hints they will add in AA's early-August media scrum. AA on how to improve given payroll constraints; Q: Reconcile Payroll Issues with club improvement? AA: “When we made the trades, it’s something we talked about. Going forward, ownership was aware, and ownership understood where the commitments would be going forward and they green-lighted everything. So, from a financial standpoint, the resources will be available for us. It won’t mean we won’t change some things and reallocate money as you do any time. “It’s not like those contracts are sneaking up on us. We really have two years of commitments after the current year and, other than Reyes, who has been a great player for us, there’s really no long-term (five-six years out) commitments out. Reyes is going to have four years left on his deal and everyone else either has two years with an option, or just two years straight. At the same time, we were well aware of where we were going to be. We did arbitration projections. There will always be decisions to be made but we’re prepared for that.” AA on payroll; “Q: How much money will you have next year? AA: I don’t have a number right now and I wouldn’t divulge the number but what I would say is that we won’t be going backwards. That’s not in the plan at all. What the number is, is developed at the end of the season. That’s our conversations with Paul. But the understanding is that we will be able to financially handle those contracts so that was why we were able to do the deals. That was a big part of our discussions. 2013 was going to be fine, it was 14 and beyond. Everyone was aware of that. Ownership was aware and that’s not going to be an issue.” There will be changes in the off-season. With a big payroll bump this team has the core to contend. I'm excited to see what AA and Beeston can get done.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I've made this point its several times. If we wanted to go out and get guys like Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle why couldn't we just go and try to sign them. Instead we traded some of our best prospects to get guys like this who were already overpaid on the free agent market. It should be one or the other. Make trades for guys under control or under reasonable salaries for prospects. And then go overpay on the free agent market when you need to because everyone else does. This is just so right on
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 (edited) Of course if depends on the market and availability too Trade for a 2 WAR 2B because there's none available via free agency and you can't afford Cano? Fine. Trade for a 2 WAR catcher this off season? Ridiculous, because you can sign a really good one for $$ and not even lose a first round pick for the best ones. flafson Verified Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I think it's more than overpaying, it's about setting precedences to give players huge Yankees like contracts. If he would have paid Reyes as a free agent, do you think EE and Bautista would agree to the contracts they have now? I doubt it.
Vincent Verified Member Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Bump A little late on this dont' you think?
SAAviour Verified Member Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Half a game out of a top 15 pick. But it won't be protected, so I guess we won't sign any free agents this year for once.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Wow, I didn't realize Texas has been that bad. Though when you have JPA as your everyday first baseman it is never a good sign. Jon Daniels probably gets canned so Ryan can bring in an old school former player to f*** the team over for years.
