Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Within the next month or so the Jays have the following players and pitchers returning from the DL Brett Lawrie 3B Melky Cabrera LF Brandon Morrow RHP Sergio Santos RHP J.A. Happ LHP These guys are not going to stay in the minors except for the rehab stints. Luis Perez (L) will rehab in the minors and may stay there if he has options? When Lawrie and Cabrera come off the DL? Assuming no other injuries, Kawasaki obviously goes down. Can't live with the luxury of an 8 man pen anymore so, one pitcher (likely one with options) will be sent to minors - Wagner? What happens when Santos comes back? Who goes?? McGowen has looked awesome in the last week. He has potential closer stuff. I would not expose him to waivers. What about Morrow and Happ? Best Option maybe trade/trades.... i would look to move Jansen, Oliver and Perez Lots to consider, and there will likely be other injuries in the interim but this is just one of the "problems" AA has in his head right now Edited July 9, 2013 by Mikeleelop
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 A lot of those guys were on the 60-day too, so 40-man spots will have to be opened. Lots of decisions. Hopefully a trade is in the works. This is why I have issue with adding a guy to the 40 man to promote him for one start, or a week of ABs (I'm looking at you, people suggesting we bring Pillar up...) The 40 man roster can quickly become a mess that way. Frankly, moving Oliver should be a no-brainer (even if we were buyers, 4 lefties in the pen is unnecessary and you can probably get a semi-valuable piece for Oliver in addition to clearing a spot on the 40 and 25 man rosters). Loup and Wagner have been great, but both have options. Redmond will obviously be going down... I would be truly happy if the Jays could get ANYTHING for Bonifacio, I hate losing assets for nothing, but it's very hard to call him an "asset" anyway. I'm not terribly concerned about making space for Melky, as I think an extended stay on the DL would be the best thing for him (and the team). He was not very good over the last month+, and much of that can be attributed to his bum legs (and possibly his "nah brah, I'm not on roids!" thing...)
digiblader Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Most likely it's: Redmond DFA/optioned Bonifacio DFAd DeRosa--unknown No idea on Kawasaki Josh Johnson traded--most likely, as he's an expiring contract and not part of the team's futre.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I think Happ has options too. Realistically, a few guys on the 40 man are likely to be traded at the deadline (hopefully to net us an actual 2nd baseman). If Rogers puts up a few more good starts he could be a perfect choice to move.

I doubt Happ spends any time in the minors when he's ready to come back, he was our best pitcher 'til he got hurt and it's not like the rest of our rotation is amazing.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Lawrie up, Kawa down Melky up, Redmond down
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 AA almost certainly has to make a trade unless he plans on sending everyone with options down which will include players like Kawasaki (obvious), Redmond (obvious), Wagner, Loup and Happ. As bad as this s***** season has been, AA does have quite a few solid pieces to work with. If he can pull off a couple solid trades that would be nice. Lets not forget others like Drabek (already optioned), Hutch and Perez who will all likely be a part of the mix next season along with players like Stroman, Nolin and Gose. AA has his work to do.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 JJ won't be traded dummy and Kawa would be sent down when Lawrie returns. JJ will be traded if the return is better than the potential of a 1st round draft pick... Bonifacio probably won't be DFA'd, I just cannot see AA giving up on him (for nothing, he could possibly spin a trade as "the right move", however)
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Does Rogers have options? Once he maxes out his innings, it would make sense to just option him down or make up some kind of fake injury.

It's entirely possible that Buffalo's rotation next year could have 5 guys with the legit ability to start in the majors.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Author Posted July 9, 2013 """Does Rogers have options? He's been inconsistent but his ERA is the best on the starting staff

Definitely AA will weigh the potential 2014 1st rounder vs what he is being offered for JJ this season at deadline
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 JJ for Dorssy Paulino + C prospect is fair

Hopefully he spins the 70 stolen bases in the past two years angle to get something of (slight) value...
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 we're not trading jj lol, we give him a qualifying offer and get our pick, that's it. as for boni i really have no idea. we should be playing him regularly to try to get him out of a slump and increase his trade value but kawasaki continues to start so idk

Rogers will not be able to start for the entire season, he will be maxed out at some point and will need to be shut down. If he has options, he could be sent down at that point.
Holden Caulfield Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 If Johnson continues to play the way he has, he may have no other choice but to accept the qualifying offer, then we'd be stuck with him at ~$14MM. Trade him if we can get anything of value.

Trade him if we can get anything of value. JJ can pitch like this the rest of the year and someone will still offer him a contract. It hurts the length and value of the contract but I would be shocked if he could at least get a 3 year deal. No way he accepts the QO unless he thinks he can rebound and try again for a big contract the following winter.

And even if he does do that, JJ on a 1 year, $14M contract isn't the worst thing that could happen, he's definitely a better pitcher than what he's provided this year.

KSaw Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 If his arm is fatigued due to innings, they will just stick him in the 15-day DL with a sore arm and then activate him in September when rosters expand. He probably maxes out about a week into August.
theblujay Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 A sandwich pick between rounds one and two. And the QO is closer to $14 million. I thought you got the team's pick that signs the player...When does that happen?
theblujay Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 The signing team's first pick evaporates. In the old CBA you would get two picks for premium FAs, now it's only a single sandwich pick. Oh, well in that case I say we trade him
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Blue Jays with options (alphabetically) Arencibia Delabar Drabek Goins Gose Happ Hutch Jenkins Jimenez Lawrie Lincoln Loup Nolin Rasmus Redmond Sierra Thole Wagner Weber There are several 5 year guys with options remaining but they can refuse assignment and become FA's.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 This is the worst idea I've ever heard... and you think DFAing him is a better idea? now the season isn't over but we certainly aren't going to be making the playoffs because we start using kawa > boni. i would try to salvage something out of boni, at least that's how i see it

The_DH Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Just a thought but why haven't we heard of a JJ to LA Dodgers rumor? It seems possible.
