G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 That doesn't change the fact that this team isn't very good. I don't care that they should be winning given the pedigrees of their pitchers. I have never seen the Blue Jays make the playoffs; for them to be theoretically good in March does nothing for me. I'll cut the FO some slack on this fact - no one, not one single GM would have ever thought Johnson and Dickey could possibly have been this bad. By some measures we got really unlucky. Both were in the riskier end in terms of acquisitions but its been ridiculous.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 If you think Beeston has it bad--imagine what'll happen to the Steinbrenners if the Yankees miss the playoffs, considering they haven't missed the playoffs since '08, and not for an extended period since 1993(they would've been in the playoffs in 1994 with Montreal had there not been a strike--imagine a Montreal/New York World Series then!) And don't get me started on the Angels.. Cashman can (rightfully) use the injury excuse this year. But I don't see how he can turn this thing around for 2014.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 If he can convince Rogers to dump more money into the team, he's done his job. Not that simple. Spend more money yes, maybe. But the team has to remain profitable or his boss/the board of directors at Rogers is not happy.

I dont think anyone will aruge that going out and getting Reyes, Johnson and Dickey was a bad idea ( well not for the cost but everyone liked the players we got). It's AA's inability to plug the holes with cheap options that drives most people crazy. You trade away top prospects, go all in and are content with a black hole at C, 2nd, and the back end of the rotation now. It's pretty pathetic.

We have pieces to build with here not like we have to rebuild the whole team need to get 2 quality arms, second base and hopefully a new catcher no need to panic
digiblader Verified Member Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Exactly. Rivera's gone, Jeter's no guarantee to return(he may retire), A-Rod is likely facing suspension, Tex is aging and has missed an entire season with Bautista's wrist injury, Kuroda's gone, Pettite likely retires--and they're far behind Boston, Toronto, and Tampa in depth and talent(Baltimore doesn't convince me--especially considering they won't be able to afford to make upgrades due to arb raises and cheap-a** ownership). Oh, and Cano needs a big contract, likely $20-25M a year. Baltimore stands to lose Jason Hammel, Scott Feldman, Brian Roberts, Nate McLouth, and have a massive arb raise coming to Chris Davis(he's looking at up to $10-15M if he hits 50-60 HRs)--and their farm is pretty dry after Gausman and INF prospect Johnathon Schoop(who's hurt BTW)--and of course Dylan Bundy is out until 2015. And they desperately need pitching..
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Unfortunately Red Sox are in pretty good shape
digiblader Verified Member Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Agreed. All we need is to patch things up by getting a 2B and another pitcher. Regarding a catcher, remember we have AJ Jimenez on the way as well, who's tearing up AA and playing well defensively. Why haven't they promoted him to AAA yet?
digiblader Verified Member Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Afraid so. They've got boatloads of prospects on the way, including Xander Bogaerts, Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster, Brandon Workman, Anthony Ranudo, Drake Britton, etc. Yankees don't have that luxury, especially with the injury/regression of many of their prospects.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Unfortunately Red Sox are in pretty good shape Agreed. Looks like Red Sox, Rays and Orioles should be contenders next season. Jays may or may not be depending on how they address SP, 2B and C. Yanks probably won't be a factor, but how many times have people said that?

I think there's enough money and resolve for the Blue Jays to be a contender next year. Heck, if we could have won 5-6 more games in April I'd say we have a good shot this year with a solid trade deadline move and reinforcements coming.

But the team has to remain profitable or his boss/the board of directors at Rogers is not happy. But that's why he's spouting his lame quotes. To keep the masses interested. I'm convinced if there was no NHL lockout the Jays wouldn't have done what they did this past off-season. From a business standpoint it made a ton of sense, whether or not the team was ready from an on-field product perspective. Now he's got to keep the iron hot and the money flowing out of Rogers pockets and back into their pockets through the team's revenues in any way necessary.

Yeah, really when it comes down to it, it was a terrible April that ruined the season. At least the good thing going into next season is that the SP should have some solid depth with Dickey, Morrow, Buehrle, Happ, Hutchison, Rogers, Romero, Drabek, Stroman and Nolan. Stroman, Nolan, Drabek and Hutch should all be solid mid season depth. Romero who knows what we get, but maybe we get lucky and he can be a backed option. The Key will be to add a legitimate frontline SP that we can have under control for a few seasons.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Welcome to last offseason. Well the reality is that most people expected a lot more from JJ and Dickey. Sure the trade for Dickey was terrible, but if he lived up to the billing this team is contending right now.

What I'm saying is that if you go back and check the old board, a lot of the posters agreed that the team should get a guy like you described, frontline starter under control for a few seasons. They needed more than one starter, but one of the starters needed to be a 1 or 2. We don't know what is going to happen, no one expected them to make the deals they made, who's to say they won't make a couple more moves, we'll see what happens.

Hutch and stroman will be part of next year most likely. I hope they can get something for JJ this year moving towards next year.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Hopefully AA gets some stopgaps and Stroman/Hutch start the year in Buffalo as depth. Unless Stroman blows through everything in Spring Training. Yeah I want both in the minors to start the year. If we are counting on one or both right out of the gate then this team will be in big trouble.

I wish they would've waited a year or gone the FA route to shore up the rotation which was in shambles and wasn't that good to begin with. In fairness, it's quite possible that they would've struck out in free agency and may have ended up with a 90 loss season. Next year certainly looks much better in terms of AAA depth, there will probably be deals made before then, I know some here think the team we see now will start opening day 2014, I doubt it.

Unless Stroman blows through everything in Spring Training. one of those 2 will be in the starting rotation next april, if not both. Drabek will be in AAA unless TJS miraculously embedded the strike zone in his arm. I can see them picking up a top end starter, but they have Happ, Hutch, MB, Morrow, Dickey, Hutch, Stroman and whoever they get this off season. if JJ is not gone at the deadline AA is full on retard. Romero is done. his career has more or less gone down the toilet. next years problem "most likely" wont be pitching. they have too many retards in the offense to be a winning team. since AA seems fully set on keeping idiots as the corner stone of the team we are pretty much screwed.

Lawrie, JPA and Boni have to be out the door before next year if this team seriously wants to compete. only way I'd keep Lawrie is if he has it written into his contract to take his ADHD meds. those 3 guys are cancers that have no idea how to spell team, never mind be part of one. the circus that is Kawasaki isn't horrible if they have 8 other guys who can hit. since that probably isn't the case they need a second baseman that can play D and hit. This team doesn't have many "untouchables" moves should be made.

Unless Stroman blows through everything in Spring Training. I hate that Hutch got injured, he was looking like a sure-thing-3rd starter at the time, with some good pitching a very good #4 or 5. Increased velocity, control wasn't an issue, fastball command always seemed spot-on, and the offspeed were starting to work as well, f*** injuries.

For Lincecum body type, he lost 5 or 6 miles in his fastball and went from being an ace to a # 3 being optimistic. I hope that Stroman keep his power like Peter Martinez did it and not lose his mojo like Lincecum.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2013 Author Posted July 9, 2013 Do you actually live in the DR or has this all been a put-on?!? lol Peter, Pedro el grande or El monstruo de Manoguayabo are the Pedro Martinez nicknames.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) Never heard that lol. Stroman is short but he has a lot more meat on him than Lincecum. Lincecum is both short and really skinny. Funny - apparently Lincecum "intentionally" put on "6 or 7 lbs" over the winter. But we all know it was really the excess calories from beer.
