Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Cubs are "making progress" with teams in trade talks involving Matt Garza. Olney lists the Rangers, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Indians, Dodgers and perhaps the Orioles as teams that are considering Garza. The Cubs have already dealt Scott Feldman, and it sounds like they could also trade Garza well ahead of the deadline. Garza would obviously fetch a bigger return. Jul 5 - 12:21 PM Rotoworld
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Rotoworld I love that we are going after Garza...... if he mattered :/ But if we get Garza plus extension.... <3
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Leave it to this team to not only make a terrible trade, but also not recognize that they shouldn't be buying in the first place.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 I'd love to have Garza on a reasonable extension. Garza as rest-of-season rental makes no sense at all unless the price is dirt cheap. The Cubs primarily want IFA cap money, I'm not even sure how much we have to trade.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Perfect, this will help the team reach 4th place. #ninja

Took the words out of my mouth lol, exactly what I wanted to say too, Garza extension is fapfapfap, and they're going to want big price + international budget
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Not the best of ideas trade a good prospect for Garza .... The Jays are a last place team and so will all the year. Sign FA Cubans and sell relievers is the best idea.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Rotoworld Buy low on Starlin Castro in the package?
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Extension? How you know that he'll want an extension and not test the free agency? If we give him his FA money early he won't care. Give him a 4 year deal paying $14m per year What do you think the extension would be? He's four months from free agency, there's no discount here. And he'd take a good prospect. 4/$56M? Edit: Do you think he'll be getting Anibal money?
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I cower at what the price might be. The farm is a bit bare right now. We're not in 2nd place looking to make the push. I should say I cower at what AA might send to them. No extension should be a killer especially if we have to give something of decent value up. Then again, I don't see why we'd go after a middle of the rotation pitcher with health issues instead of someone who can actually lead the rotation. I don't see how he and/or Utely are going to turn the season around with the injuries and inconsistency from everyone else.

If this even happened an extension would have to come with it I would think. I am sure AA realizes this team isn't really going to make it this year, but getting Garza on an extension would make a lot of sense. Would give this team a shot in the arm and maybe get them to a respectable finish and set them up for a possible contending year next season. The guy has been pretty durable throughout his career except for his injury last season so that's a plus I guess.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 An extension wouldn't be all that reasonable IMO. He'd want 4/50 or something, free agent value. And we'd have to give up a good prospect (Osuna?) to get him. If Garza were open to it we'd be better off waiting until the offseason to sign him. Some team that is actually a contender will offer the Cubs more than we could/should, since they have more of a need. Lohse wanted 5/75 = Garza
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Right, so why give up a good prospect or two when we can sign him or others in free agency for the same price. He won't get Anibal money, hasn't displayed the durability or performance. Four years is max IMO. They probably want to sell the idea to the fans that they haven't given up on the season and help keep ticket sales up all the while setting this team up for next season.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I think it would be more to solidify the team for next season with Josh Johnson probably being a goner. That is basically part two of what I said. Setting up the team for next year. We all know JJ is as good as gone.

If he hits FA we face big $$$ teams that also want starting, and he's one of the best options on the market. His value goes up, and his chance of signing with us (as a destination) goes down, as it did with Anibal

The Blue Jays are a big market team.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Let's not forget that Garza is a massively greasy dirtbag who smells like leftover lobster tacos and spits constantly. No thanks
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Fine with AA acquiring players now that will help us in 2014/2015. If they are signed or come with extensions. No 2013 1/2 season rentals though. There is no point.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Yes but most free agents don't want to sign here. A trade might be the best way to go. Things are changing bro. We have Reyes, Bautista, Dickey, Buehrle they are a positive influence for attracting good players. Rogers has to remove the damn astro turf.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Are you Canadians?...What is the income per capita in Canada? The Blue Jays are a big market team. Which is why we have been able to attract such great FA options like Izturis and Melky instead of guys like Anibal, right? We're one of them most hated destinations and people want us to relocate too based on some player survey, people don't like to willingly come to Canada
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Let's not forget that Garza is a massively greasy dirtbag who smells like leftover lobster tacos and spits constantly. No thanks Now we have to get him.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Nobody wants to hear it but it will cost Sanchez+ for him.. too many teams with PS hopes will be in on him
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I think it's the losing. Players don't want to sign with the Royals or Mariners either. If we give them the most money they'll come here. It's hard to believe that money was an issue with not signing Sanchez... we had tonnes of it this season. Maybe AA didn't even go after him? lol
Knights4Cup Verified Member Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 As a both a Cub fan and Blue Jay fan, I would bet that Chicago would come out on top if a Garza trade happened. The Cubs are doing all of the right things right now. Garza has pitched great since he came off the DL and I expect the Cubs to complete a deal with a GM who is a sucker. Not that he's a bad pitcher but it seems teams get desperate during this time of the year. Toronto may as well blow their wad for 2014, pray Dickey conitnues pitching great, Buehrle remains a solid #3-4 while Morrow and Happ never get hurt again. Months before Lind accepts his MVP and I win the lottery. Hahahaa
