Tuco Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Count me as one of the people who dont think Lawrie will last at 2b. To be a good 2B you need to have really good hands and a accurate arm and Lawrie is questionable at both. I'm sure he will make some amazing range plays at 2B similar to what he did at 3rd but I dont feel confident with him being able to routinely turn double plays and make on point throws to 1st. Also throw in the idea of players hard sliding into him and it could really get ugly.

We may see more knock down balls and recovery throws than you normally see at 2B. At this point though I think it's worth a try IF they have a plan at third.
ZaunCherry Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I don't like this. You have an excellent (elite?) young defender at 3B. Don't fix what isn't broken. If you can't find a 2B who can give you 1.5+ WAR, you should just pack it up and go home. Agreed. Lawrie at 2B is a good idea to help us win now, but ideally it wouldn't even be considered. Here's to hoping we sign Cano and don't end up like LAA with a bunch of bust FA signings.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 2B market - Cano 3B market - Aramis, Headley, Moustakas (maybe)...
8D Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I like the move. I think it shows that the Jays are desperate, but I think Lawrie is gonna do really well at 2B.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Blue Jays manager John Gibbons "talked at length" on Wednesday about using Brett Lawrie at second base. That's the word from MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm, who says that Gibbons reacted excitedly to the thought of having Jose Reyes and Lawrie up the middle defensively. Lawrie has been playing some second base on his minor league rehab assignment and could be the starter there when he returns after the All-Star break. Mark DeRosa, Maicer Izturis and Edwin Encarnacion could share time at the hot corner. Encarnacion would still probably DH and play first base for the most part. I think it shows that the Jays are desperate, but I think Lawrie is gonna do really well at 2B. 2B >> 3B but............Is Lawrie good as a 2B?
8D Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Lawrie is a very good athlete so I think he can pick up things quite quickly. He's got good hands, agile like a mofo, speed, good arm, range, etc. He'll figure it out and I'm sure he'll do well at 2B. I just hope he hits.
Smokey Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 ...I just hope he hits. I'm sure switching to a new position mid-season will really help his hitting:rolleyes:
8D Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Yeah... like I said, the Jays must be desperate. They must not like other 2B options due to pieces they don't want to giveaway in trades, already stretched with their payroll so they won't be able to sign FAs, all other internal options suck. Lawrie already rehabbing and not doing very well this season, and this season is almost a write off so why not see what they have in Lawrie at 2B. Might be a good fit and at least solves 2B for next season if he excels here. Throw EE, J-bau or someone else at 3B next season.
Pete_7 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Just this coming offseason we have the following FA options for 2B: Omar Infante <- re-signs with Det Ryan Raburn <- no Chase Utley <- old with bad knees Kelly Johnson <- hell no Robinson Cano <- no chance fixed

If you can't find a 2B who can give you 1.5+ WAR, you should just pack it up and go home. Last year, there were 19 2nd baseman who put up 1.5 war or higher. (22 in 2011, 21 in 2010) Not sure they're quite as easy to find as you suggest. We definitely need to address it though.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Why not move Lawrie to second? If it works out great, if not you can alway's move him back to third.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I suggested jays get infante two years ago and got a bunch of "you're dumn"
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I hope they're not about to trade what little's left of the farm to get a 3B. I'm not sure what to think of this move. Izturis is hitting better, but I guess they think Lawrie would be better defensively than him at 2B. I wonder if they'll panic and call Lawrie up for Friday 'cause I expect them to get swept by the Indians...hope I'm wrong.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 One thing is for sure, Lawrie's chances of being an AS are better at 2B than at 3B with Longoria, Machado and Beltre there.

Pete_7 Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Unless Lawrie hits .800 and 70 bombs after the break it won't matter because this offense is pitiful
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Unless Lawrie hits .800 and 70 bombs after the break it won't matter because this offense is pitiful jays are 9th out of 30 teams in the MLB in runs scored per game. I'm not sure that would qualify them for a pitiful evaluation. They haven't been healthy all year. Reyes has missed most of the season. Melky has been there but has not been healthy while playing. When the team gets a healthy melky back and lawrie back I think the offense is pretty solid.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 anyone notice hechavarria's numbers have been improving every month, and now are just behind izturis overall? defensively, lawrie 3B, hechavarria SS, reyes 2B, and EE 1B would be best in baseball And the team wouldn't be so old.....

Sigh, stats are misleading. people who soley rely on stats generally don't know what they are talking about. The jays offense is misleading as it often gets it's runs in bunches, the twins series is a prime example. They go quiet way too often for extended periods especially on the road. Running up the score in bunches has inflated their numbers. Overall this is NOT a good offense, and even worse at situational hitting. The jays were close to being shut out 3 of the last 4 games until the 7th inning last night.
blackjays21 Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 lawrie to second. reyes obv ss.. izturis and encarnacion splitting time at 3rd.. with Kawasaki as back up inf.. sounds pretty potent to me.. I like the idea and have been ever since it was first mentioned.. lawrie has a unreal arm and good foot speed to get to the slow balls or tricky balls up the middle or to the right side.. I say try it out for the remainder of the season.. who knows we may just have our future second baseman in lawrie.. and it is a lot easier to find a premier 3rd baseman than it is a second base

If Bautista became a FA, he would be signed as a 3B or 1B. We have an internal 3B solution already, just too damn bad Gose has taken a step back.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Thinking about it more, it makes no sense at all to switch Lawrie to 2B mid-season If the braintrust sees Lawrie as a 2B long term, make the switch starting ST 2014!

I would agree wholeheartedly if he was on the big league club. But the rehab assignment time lets you try it out. Plus, I think AAA has something else up his sleeve that we don't know about yet.
