sdyment Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Tried to put this in the other thread, but it's closed... Some positive results from Ricky... http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/romero-improving-throws-six-scoreless-for-buffalo/ Still 3 walks, but it's nice to see him getting a bit deeper into the game. Anybody see any of the game? Did you notice any big changes to Rickey's approach?
Pizzapops Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Good to see Ricky Ro back in biz. Even he admits his problems are all mental. They attempted to re-vamp his mechanics and the results were vomit-inducing. Maybe now that he's gone back to his old mechanics he'll be mentally associating the way he pitches moving forward with the winning ways of the past, and associate the horror that has been 2013 with the failed attempt at re-inventing himself.
admin Site Manager Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Nice that they aren't teeing up on him, but the walks are pretty important part of him being 'fixed'. I'd really hate for them to bring him back up if he continues performances like this.

DwightDM Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I think Ricky coming out and admitting his problems are 100% mental are a big step in turning this around.. it seemed like for a while no one wanted to say it but now that its out there he can just focus on moving on.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 So the ultimate question is... How many good starts does he need to show them before you dare calling him up again???
Caper Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 So the ultimate question is... How many good starts does he need to show them before you dare calling him up again??? Probably 4 or 5.... but maybe more. There is not a huge need for him right now.
The_DH Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Enough starts that he feels confident. A fragile RR is no good.
DwightDM Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 With the 40-man issues we're headed for in the next month or so and the extra pitching depth we'll have with Hutch and Drabek coming back, there's no point to bring RR back until you're as sure as you can be he's back to his old self. The team doesn't need to further complicate their roster crunch, and Ricky sure as hell doesn't need to come back up prematurely to get bombed.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 He has thrown out the new mechanics and basically told the Jays he is going to do this on his own . I think he finally got pissed at himself and the organization . He may never trust AA and Walker/Hentigan again If ever there is an example of how to destroy a struggling pitchers confidence the Blue jays have done it .
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Not bad... let's go Ricky! I want to be able to wear that Romero jersey with pride again.

Everybody has Rickey's best interests at heart. There's no EVIL at work here.
sdyment Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Author Posted June 15, 2013 Put it into perspective compared to his last 18 months... It's a step forward. I don't think he should be called up at all in 2013. I say let him have this season to just relax and play. He can compete for the #5 in ST next year.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I was going to say am I the only one who does not find this impressive at all? 4.5 K/9 is bad and so is 4.5 BB/9. He's a contact pitcher. You or I really can't judge by looking at the stat line. All take that line any day of the week, if we are talking weak contact.
Sparky12 Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 So the ultimate question is... How many good starts does he need to show them before you dare calling him up again??? I would like so see him have a solid couple of months, want him pitching to the point that we can't keep him down
Caper Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I think he has to make an adjustment on his breaking ball. He really has to be able to drop one in the zone... the same type they drop on Bautista all the time. Then he can throw that one that hits the dirt, that used to get so many batters out.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Otherwise known as a bad pitcher. Why is a weak contact pitcher a bad pitcher?
Caper Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Good pitchers miss bats. Pitchers who give up a lot of contact do so because their stuff isn't good enough to miss bats. Of the thousands of pros who fail to miss bats, a select few maintain long major league careers. Those who do tend to have very low walk rates. Since the start of 2012, Ricky has been a pitcher who can't miss bats, but also can't limit walks. He'll need a 3:1 K:BB ratio in AAA before he even dreams of having major league success. His most recent start wasn't good enough. I don't think you can make that judgement by simply looking at one stat line. I don't know what the walks looked like... maybe umps missed a call or two... Maybe he got calls. I don't know. It certainly looks better then his most recent starts.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Similarly, I don't think anyone can call this a positive step because balls were hit to the defense for 6 innings. It's absolutely a positive step.... regardless if he needs to show more or not. He pitched 6 scoreless innings against one of the best teams in the international league..... It still is a long way from where he was...... but for sure it was a positive step towards his road back.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 I disagree. I just don't give even the tiniest of f***s about hits and ER over a 6 inning sample. Maybe if he had struck out 8 and walked 1 or something I'd give it some thought. And even then - its one start. He'll be ready when he's rocking a 3:1 K:BB ratio. Even then, he's probably never anything more than a fringy 5-type. OK.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 There is a tiny positive you can take from this, in that he didn't give up a zillion fly balls or anything.

It's not on anyone else but himself.

I dont agree with your logic here. Youre saying a pitcher isn't any good unless he has a high K rate because contact pitchers just get lucky. Just because a ball is put in play doesnt mean it was a well hit ball. Think about the flip side, any hitter can put the ball in play on any given at bat, that doesnt mean its a good approach. Youre essentially saying a guy can go 0-4 and look completely foolish with weak ground balls and half swings, but the pitcher wasnt successful because he didnt strike him out? Nonsense
