flafson Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 How come we get 11th pick and not 10th? Pirates had 9th pick this year...
Caper Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 It's funny. It's mildly disappointing, only because we yearn for instance gratification. But think how hyped we all will be next June. If the Jays can't make a sustained run... I hope they tank to finish bottom 3rd again. An 8 or 9 pick, plus an 11... plus a compensation for JJ (someone will sign him).

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Brentz + Tellez please. Thanks for asking about them reporters..... ! Kind of like this... I'm hoping AA takes a run at Miguel Gonzalez this year and is aggressive in next year's draft. He has to sign Brentz + Tellez or this will be a very thin and disappointing draft class.
Caper Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 How come we get 11th pick and not 10th? Pirates had 9th pick this year... Yes... because they couldn't sign the 8th the year before.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 11th pick 2014 >>>>>>> 10th pick 2013 More money to spend bitches
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I put a thread about AA's Bickford comments in the main forum so everyone would see it - some posters never look in here. I'll merge that one in to this one later
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 AA: "It looks as though we won't be signing him. Anything can change but ... right now we probably won't have a deal in place "I wouldn't jump to conclusions (about the money) there's sometimes a lot of information that's not out there
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Not because of money? WTF? I don't get it
BabbaGanoush Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Does the kid just hate Canada or something?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Found out something about him they don't like? Lying about it not being the money? Punted because next year's draft looks better?
flafson Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Found something interesting from MLBTR: "The Blue Jays drafted Bickford, a hard-throwing prep righty, tenth overall. He was a late riser on draft boards. In their scouting report, Baseball America noted that Bickford "could be a tough sign away from Cal State Fullerton." The Jays will receive the 11th overall pick as compensation next year if they fail to sign Bickford by tomorrow's 4pm central time deadline, under the likely assumption they offered him at least 40% of the slot value of $2,921,400. Toronto previously failed to sign their first-round pick in 2011, Tyler Beede, as well as supplemental round pick James Paxton in '09." Sounds like they saw something and didn't want to offer him anything close to slot. Maybe they know they need more money to sign the other guys.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 What a piece of s*** draft strategy. Should have just taken Shipley.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 AA has had more poor drafts than good ones. I'm sick of this s***.

Shouldn't we get 10th (as one of the first 10 this year was also a compensation pick, no?)
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 What a piece of s*** draft strategy. Should have just taken Shipley. He was BPA there. I don't them hard-lining Bickford. If he doesn't come in under slot he isn't worth it.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Maybe they know they need more money to sign the other guys. It's possible that they didn't expect everyone to be willing to accept their money and to have to make a decision between Bickford and the other guys. If it's a choice between signing one or two players who are probably just as good and getting a pick next year and just signing Bickford, than it's probably an easy decision. They can leave an offer of slot on the table just in case Bickford caves at the last minute and otherwise just turn the page. I have a lot of frustration with AA but I do like the way he's willing to game the draft system and doesn't care about the optics of not signing a pick.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 How the f*** do you know he was BPA? Braden Shipley is a damn fine arm and much closer to a finished product. You may buy into AA's evaluation process, but that doesn't make it accurate.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 AA has had more poor drafts than good ones. I'm sick of this s***. If he gets Telez and Brentz I'm pretty okay with this draft... Also, next year's draft is supposed to be better so 10th overall (or 11th...) should be a better player than Bickford.

imsorry4beatinU Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 The guys AA has hired then. The Jays haven't developed anyone under AA. Most of them were high risk/high reward picks and mostly high school players.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 He was BPA there. I don't them hard-lining Bickford. If he doesn't come in under slot he isn't worth it. Yeah, the whole point of popping Bickford so early should be to open up a pool of money to sign a couple of guys like Brentz and Tellez. As if something like ~2 million isn't enough for Phil f***ing Bickford, who really wasn't even on the radar at #10. He was a kid that most thought would fall to the supplemental round.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 The draft was bad for Toronto no matter what happens with Bickford.... they hardly drafted any plus baseball names.
