Do you like Lind now? (Meaning you want him to stick around)

Is this the real Adam we're seeing again? Who knows. He's been having terrific at bats this last month. With the financial bind this club is in though, 7 mil next year is a lot to put up with a good chance he returns to his old 3 year average self. Especially when a guy like Hafner signs for 2 mil.

Of course it makes sense, if you're not dim you'll see past a small-sample-size and make your own deductive conclusion about Lind. Which you have basically done... good job!

I agree the poll is stupid because you're actually asking two entirely different questions really. You are asking "do you like Lind now".. and essentially "should we pick up his option"

 

Hard to not like him "now" when he sports a .880 OPS

 

Even if he keeps at his current pace, he will fall shy of giving us 1 WAR in the last 4 years for the $16m he's gotten. Not only that but his bat was one that the team has really been hoping on each year. That's why I dislike him more than JPA. At least you know what JPA is.

 

Luckily no decision has to be made until the season is over and you can look at the full body of work. My wild guess would be he ends up the year as a .750 OPS bat and for that I would pass when the time comes.. if he finished strong, I guess the team will have to take a hard look at it.

He's at his peak trade value. There's not really a market for "just ok" DHs. You're either an elite masher that gets paid top $ or you're an also-ran. Like another poster said above there's cheaper options out there like Hafner. If you really like him, trade him for whatever you can get for him, have that team not pick up the option, sign him back next year for half the cost. And if the team picks up the option...sign someone else who can provide Lind-like numbers for half the cost.

 

The only thing we need out of Lind before he departs is for him to sprinkle a little of that "take a walk sometimes" fairy dust around the clubhouse.

I like Lind as a DH, but now that he's doing well is the best time to trade him. Don't let him regress to what he was the past couple years here, move him for something young, cheap and useful. It doesn't have to be a great piece but a piece nonetheless.

I said at the beginning of the year I thought CM would turn him around.

Every time he has worked with CM, he has done very well.

I think that continuing to work with CM, changing his approach to hit to all fields, as well as take walks, will see him continue to succeed.

At some point, they need to experiment with letting him hit LHP though. A DH that can only hit RHP isn't the most useful guy to have around.

 

People always say get rid of him. We need something better at 1st base, but our budget is going to be stretched pretty thin over the next few years, so we're not going on a buying spree.

As for picking up cheap options like Haffner, people seem to forget that the only reason that Haffner was cheap was because no one expected him to do anything. For everyone of of him, there are three Carlos Penas and three Rick Ankiels.

 

I'm still a little sore that we didn't pick up Eric Chavez though. So little money, for such talent.

Some of us expected Lind to have a good year . 1) working with CM and his all fields approach . 2) when he got DFA,ed and NO ONE wanted him for nothing he woke up to the fact unless he focused on Baseball his career was over . So he comes to ST in shape and focused on baseball . 3) Strict Platoon .

 

Still this is too small a sample size to suggest he is back. He needs to be kept on a short leash . Trouble with Lind is If we pick up his option he could get lazy again and come back next year out of shape and stinking up the roster

If we can get someone that can play 3B/OF/DH and hit LHP (Jeff Baker as an example) for the bench next season and platoon him with Lind at DH (both getting the odd start against opposite hand pitching of course [less than 8 all season ideally]) then yes I want Lind.

I'd say Todd Frazier but he's better than the weak end of a platoon.

I don't think there's any chance of him regressing very far. He's always hit righties. His career wOBA is like 0.367 vs. RHP. As long as Gibby keeps him in a strict platoon he'll hit.

 

Over the last four years vs RHP:

 

2013 (SSS): .391 wOBA

2012: .343 wOBA

2011: .330 wOBA

2010: .357 wOBA

 

Career numbers are obviously skewed upward by that great 2009 year. Being a defensive liability, he is clearly not worth the money (especially with how tight our payroll will be).

 

But if he keeps this up over a full season it's not the biggest tragedy if the options get picked up. Whatever.

This is possible. I suppose picking up a 7 million option is cheaper than spending 2 million on the buyout & finding someone else useful for 5 million.

 

Gibby has done an excellent job managing Lind .

 

Who else can be DH & play 1B that does not need platoon partner.

 

You have to factor in the cost of a platoon DH for Lind.
