Nafro Verified Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Alford interview: http://news.nationalpost.com/2015/03/01/toronto-blue-jays-prospect-anthony-alford-who-aspired-to-be-two-sport-star-now-happy-to-focus-on-just-baseball/ Cool article, I was very interested in Alford, but unsure of what the story was. I don't know in this day and age, if we will ever see a true two-sport star. This is in the news again with Jameis Winston admitting he would still love to play baseball someday.

I know Alford is a gifted athelete to play at such a high level in two sports, however he should not be mentioned in the same breath as Bo jackson. As a matter of fact, since we are talking about "Two sport stars" Alford has yet to prove he is even a one sport star. He was a bench player in college football and has yet to prove he's a star in baseball. I still have hope for baseball but he is lightyears away from what Bo Jackson accomplished.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Bautista is on the board of directors of a bat company ROFL, why am i not surprised?
baubau Verified Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 why am i not surprised? ....Because he is a baseball player that hits the ball... with a bat.. and is good at it...
flafson Verified Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 ....Because he is a baseball player that hits the ball... with a bat.. and is good at it... Not that, the fact he's on the board of directors of a bat company. Ask any of the other position players if they are in the board of directors of a bat company, i would imagine they say no, but i could be wrong.

Dude likes to get his beak wet in the business world.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 He also has a financial stake in Booster Juice... Dude likes to get his beak wet in the business world. I think it's well known that Bautista is a very smart individual. I get the feeling he just gets bored and enjoys learning new ventures or being an active participant in new things and since he has a ludicrous amount of money he can afford to spend it learning new things, that if he's good at it he'll make more back than he spends in the long game. Retirement planning when you're rich I guess.

I don't know, I could be wrong, but this seems to be a natural fit. If I had a company that produced sporting equipment, I would want some professional athletes that used that equipment,on my board. I mean and of all the players in baseball, it seems logical to have someone who's nickname is "Joey Bats" on a bat companies board of directors!

For sure, but usually you hear on players giving their name or becoming ambassadors of some kind. Board of directors is usually for business folks or shareholders (which he may be) It makes total sense don't get me wrong, but it's surprising how many ventures he throws his hat to while still playing at his prime.

Bautista grew up in a business environment. Both his parents have Master's Degrees and were business executives in the D.R. He's probably picked up on quite a few things just through inadvertent exposure. The business world is something he's familiar with and probably quite interested in as well. He probably intends to pursue it full time after his baseball career is over. It only makes sense that he would have already have planted some seeds.

I had no idea that was his background. I knew there was a reason that I registered and started participating in this forum.

Yeah here's an article on that very subject with Bautista http://www.si.com/mlb/2015/02/10/jose-bautista-toronto-blue-jays-bautista-family-education-fund

Because his parents are well off, he wasn't pressured financially to sign as a teenager. He completed his high school, played in the NCAA (Junior College) and came up through the draft not the IFA system. I would guess he took some business classes when he had the chance.

He used a cut up milk cobtainer taped to his hand instead and rode a donkey to the baseball field. True story. It's incredible the contrast and the poverty so many live in.

You would think he would just use his barehands to catch the ball. Probably would have been easier then a milk container taped to his hand lol

He has had a different path than some but that could be even more credit to him due to the fact he didn't just rely on his parents and education.

Chase DeJong Jairo Labourt Richard Urena Matt Smoral Yeltsin Gudino Jayson Aquino John Stilson D.J. Davis Rowdy Tellez I don't think it's just me that's had some of these links show up seriously malformed... Not the first time I've seen it happen on this board either... (Labourt's for example, the writing is fine, but the actual link has ".com/watch?v=" replaced with a semi-colon... Obviously easy to work around, just weird.

raBBit Verified Member Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I am excited to see Rowdy Tellez's progress. Every passing round I was hoping he would be snatched. Looking at things just through the lens of currency, that was a tremendous value pick for the Jays.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Just in case anybody still thought Osuna was a chubby little Mexican: Looks very in shape. Note the "weaknesses" from the recent BP Blue Jays top 10: Weaknesses: Lacks physical projection; body will need to be closely watched; has to stay on top of conditioning; works elevated and to the arm side with the fastball; overthrows heater with effort; doesn’t finish and stay over the ball well; below-average command of arsenal (present); inconsistent keeping wrist above curveball; tends to wrap and roll; lacks strong identity (more of a slurve). check, check, and check?
flafson Verified Member Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 He does look in shape but need a 360 on him to be certain
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 He does look in shape but need a 360 on him to be certain Certainly possible that he's a size 32 but packing a Randy belly up front.
