kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 I have to say - AA nabbing Ruiz on a nice free agent contract before the end of October would go a long way to satisfying me that he understands the problems with this team and that he has the support/money to give us a shot next year. We need a defensive catcher who can at least contribute offensively , If we don't get that done then AA might as well start the rebuild early
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Getting Kazmir would be great, but we also need to try to get the new Kazmir/Kluber. Pitchers exhibit massive variation in their performance, so if you get enough lottery tickets some of them will work out, and that's what Cleveland has banked on with their rotation. The Cubs have done the same with acquiring Wood, Feldman, CarlosV, and now Arrieta. All of them had intriguing skillsets and a chance to break out. Feldman and Wood did. Phil Hughes fits that description, though I don't think he suits the Rogers Centre well since he's an extreme fly ball pitcher. I could see him having success in a big park somewhere in the NL. Colby Lewis could be an intriguing option if he's healthy next season. Also, Scott Baker was a solid starter when healthy with the Twins. They can both be nice lottery tickets.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Author Posted September 29, 2013 Scott Baker is my #1 nominee for lottery tickets.

Jays spend some of their development budget to hire mercs to aid high profile players defect from Cuba with the agreement that they will sign with the Jays. It's bulletproof... (which is probably something the mercs will require)

Firing Buck, Tabler, Wilner and even Zaun would go a long way as well.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Henderson Alvarez now has about 2 fWAR in just 17 games, after his 9 no hit innings today. ERA/FIP/xFIP all below 4.00. Despite barely reaching 100 innings, he would be 3rd on the Jays in pitcher WAR, just a hair behind Dickey and Buehrle who have pitched full seasons. I'd say "salt in the wound", but when the wound is a 15 inch wide shotgun blast right through the soul, salt is a little superfluous.

Has any of the media types that follow the team asked AA about what he gave up at all this season? Probably not. I wonder if Lou Pinella and others still think it was the Blue Jays who "raped" (his word), and not the other way around. Heck, they all probably still do.
DH12 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 AA in his answers today said he didn't know the Jays were truly out of the race until just before the all star break. LOL.

There were people on here thinking Alvarez would outperform MB as soon as this year. I know I was trying to bet BTS on it. Injury cost him though. But contracts considered, its not close...this year and going forward I mean. Could have used a good chunk of that cash for A. Sanchez, who most liked and had HA around still as very good #3-4 guy for cheap Of course, i admit i thought JJ had a super sexy year in him.. That was way off obviously

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I was just looking through some of the season stats. Hard to believe there were only 6 players in the NL with 100+ rbi and 8 in the AL, and only 2 people with more than 36 home runs.

"His big WAR combined with several great moments " about Donaldson. This guy after he starts off his rant about how WAR doesnt explain everything.

If he had come through in the clutch more often, the Brewers may not have done so poorly. Also, he should be penalized for allowing himself to be on the same team as Ryan Braun. And of course, it's too confusing to properly value defense, so it's best to just ignore it completely.

Uhhh, I think your forgetting the value they put on highlight reel catches (Adam Jones Style) or Jump Trows (Derek Jeter Style). There's your 'defensive metrics'.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 God the MVP is such a lightning rod of debate. I dont care about the award either way but I'm curious on the SABR heavy crowd's insistence that MVP be translated literally (and I feel like debating something out of boredom) But one thing I think that gets missed, is its a one year award. There's plenty of old school stats therefore that can unfortunately be relevant.. even interpreting the meaning of MVP literally.. how a tradiionalist would I mean like say batting avg.. more specifically why would BABIP matter? If we are looking at the season, we are only looking at results. What does good luck or bad luck have to do with it? So say a guy that's sitting at .390 on BABIP and it helps him to big numbers.. when he usually hits around .280.. its wrong to say either side is wrong in how they view that. Also, situational hitting.. if a guy hits .450 with RISP and it helps him pad the sexy RBI stats that voters like.. we should disregard cause its not sustainable?.. even though its unarguably helping the guy's team win that much more in that given season. Or a guy should be penalized for coming up 50 more PA's (successfully) with RISP then the next guy? He's helping him team win a lot more than the guy that isnt getting the opportunities... this is 2013, we have to be fair and equal I guess? FB% that go for the HR.. you get the pitcure.. So there's that from a tradionalist perspective.. thoughts? Im really just throwing crap to wind here for debate:) Also, on team W's.... this one is harder to argue I guess besides the human element. I guess voters like seeing good players do well when it matters. Kind of like how many BJ fans like myself tend to care much less when their team is doing bad (please no getting called out by Gibbers now!)
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Author Posted September 30, 2013 I'm bored as f*** too so let's do this. like say batting avg.. more specifically why would BABIP matter? I don't think anyone really makes that argument. Also, situational hitting.. if a guy hits .450 with RISP and it helps him pad the sexy RBI stats that voters like.. we should disregard cause its not sustainable? No, we disregard it because (I disregard it because) it's so heavily influenced by other teammates, because your other teammates need to get on base ahead of you. FB% that go for the HR.. you get the pitcure.. And again, I don't think anyone uses HR/FB.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2013 Author Posted September 30, 2013 I don't think anyone believes in correcting for BABIP or HR/FB luck in determining the MVP. I think some guys who are just getting into stats try to, but it's not the right thing to do.
