Man, that Boston! Another win against a hapless Padres team. Better start printing those playoff tickets at Fenway--they have an outside shot at 60 wins by the All-Star Break.

 

As I've said before--we(and other teams) will have to settle for a wild card--Boston's not giving up the AL East, especially with that talent there. Who knew getting the high paid cancers of Youkilis, A-Gone, Crawford and Beckett made the team a lot better?

 

Shows that Boston is better with developing its own talent rather than overpaying on high level(Josh Hamilton, Zack Grienke, etc.) They've been better by signing mid-level free agents(without compensation) to help their core.

I'm not cheering for the Yankees--just because they swept Minnesota doesn't make them a good team. Minnesota isn't very good. They'll have a tougher time vs. Baltimore on the weekend.

I don't have a strong feeling about it either way. I think JJ has pitched worse than his peripherals suggest -- I don't think he's going to simply regress to that 3.70 xFIP. He's not throwing anything in the strike zone. I also think Alvarez has a chance to become a decent pitcher in the NL with a few adjustments.

I'm pretty sure most fans were happy to give him away, not really sure to be honest. He was decent/solid with the occasional great.

He's 22 (or 21?) the kid is way ahead of his time as a starter, most starters his age would do worse. All he needs is to polish that changeup and make it an out pitch. His biggest problem was after getting to two strikes, not being able to put the batter away

Yeah I liked Alvarez a lot. But he would have been a reasonable give for what he got... If JJ was any good this year.

The Mets have designated right-handed reliever Brandon Lyon for assignment, according to the team's official Twitter feed. New York will recall fellow righty Greg Burke to take Lyon's roster spot, the team further tweets.

 

After a solid 2012 season in which he put up a 3.10 ERA, 9.3 K/9, and 3.0 BB/9 over 61 innings for the Astros and Blue Jays, Lyon signed on with the Mets for 2013. As ESPN's game log shows, Lyon had been reasonably productive for New York until he was bombed by the Nationals last Friday and Sunday. He is currently sporting a 4.91 ERA in 33 innings thrown, though he was sitting at 3.16 earned per nine before the Nats came into town.

 

As ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin notes on Twitter, Lyon was one of only two free agents (the other being Shaun Marcum) to get a Major League deal from the Mets this past offseason. Rubin also tweets that Lyon was on the verge of triggering contract incentives. Sitting at 37 appearances, Lyon would have earned $100k for every five appearances beginning with his fortieth.

Jays should f***ing claim, if there is any time to claim, it should be now (we should have also claimed Juan Francisco from the Braves)

Francisco never went on waivers, I wonder if they would have put in a claim had he. Lyon's fastball is way down (averaged 90.2 in 2012, 87.8 this year), may be a concern.

 

I kept saying the Jays should have signed K-Rod. He signed for nothing and is having a fantastic year.

 

We should throw him in the weighted ball program lol. K-Rod and Mike Gonzalez should have been signed

DFA'd != going on waivers. Mike Gonzalez too, for the past two years he's signed for nothing and I've questioned that. The relief market is weird.
