  1. Bo is my favourite player beyond kirk, and i love contact guys who can get to anything. It is truly a complete outlier skill. i also think its a bit underrated in modern baseball. However, its a skill that really degrades over time. So, if you are the front office, you need to really weigh a big free agent contract.
  2. I think a pitcher who could slot in our top three might be functionally unobtainable at the deadline. The pen though is eminently addressable. Assuming Sandlin and Garcia are expected back, i think you could try something like this before they come back. - Hoffman - Leverage Reliever - Rodriquez - Little - Fisher - middle reliever (opposite hand to leverage guy) - Nance - long reliever/6th starter type/manoah? Then option Bruhil, Sandlin when back, Fluharty. These are the triple A depth. DFA Green and DFA Nance if Garcia comes back or he blows up. The assets to trade... Jimenez, Clase, and Martinez are out of options next year. Kasevich is rule 5 eligible this year. As are Tieddeman and Rojas.
  3. What about something like clase, orelvis for jake bird? Too little? I'm finding it hard to guage what would be a good price.
  4. We need Schneider at least or go out and get a different rightie bat. Roden is the obvious one to trade i guess, although maybe loperfido would get more back?
  5. Yea that might work. honestly though, i think Preller is trying to use pitcher scarcity to get a controllable near star like Duran. If it came down to just getting a left fielder, he'll just trade for one with prospects.
  6. The padres don't want prospects. They seem to want a controllable outfielder. Obviously though, Varsho is worth more than Cease. Bader would be a good get, i agree.
  7. Yea the whole thing doesn't make much sense. Preller maybe trying to convert an expiring contract into control.
  8. He looks to be fine as of right now. And he's projected to be about a 4 WAR player over the rest of this season and next. Cease would have to come with a really good prospect to get him. That's the starting point at least. It would be a tough decision though. If we did do it, i'd suggest going and getting Bader as a rental replacement. Although at that point... san diego should just cut out the middle man and do that themselves .
  9. People were talking about trading varsho in the context of the padres wanting to trade cease for a centrefielder.
  10. There is an article out there but its paywalled... basically saw no statistically significant correlation between signing bonuses and performance on the international side. https://downonthefarm.substack.com/p/where-is-money-well-spent-on-amateur?utm_source=post-banner&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=posts-open-in-app&triedRedirect=true Its the opposite of the draft where there is a strong correlation. The evidence would probably say spread the money around.
  11. Its kind of frustrating because its such a unique environment pitching wise that there are probably some very innovative people who would have ideas on how to approach it as an organization.
  12. Hayes is the best 3rd baseman by a mile though this year metrically. They are projected to have similar WAR, and its 88 vs 63 WRC+. This year they have similar value and hayes more directly solves their main weakness.
  13. A 50fv hitting prospect isn't that far away from the difference in varsho and cease.
  14. Maybe it was that mcmahon is a leftie, or the price but kebryan hayes would have been a massive defensive upgrade, and they might have been able to help his hitting.
  15. And he played at coors. Edit.. um i guess that doesn't matter... park adjusted
  16. Salas is honestly interesting to me. If you got him and then just combed their system for a couple of pop up international guys, or pitchers you liked. Stick him in vancouver and see what you have. But the shortstop De Vries would be better.
  17. Whatever on ryan mcmahon. That that isn't saurez is a massive win for us.
  18. I'd really consider Cease for Varsho plus prospects. If there is any system that could throw up future stars its one run by Preller. Cease also absolutely starts a playoff game.
  19. Wow, that almost seems steep unless salas has fallen off somewhat. A 19 year old catcher in double A is either incredibly advanced or them pushing him up to f*** with other team's models.
  20. There is probably around $25-30 million surplus value on varsho at 10m per win. And maybe 7/8 million on Cease. That is roughly estimating it. So, a 50FV pitching prospect if they have one. It is san diego though so i want one of those crazy lotto tickets they always seem to have.
  21. I'd prefer Alcantara as well. I don't like prospects for cheap (ish) control trades for big market teams. It's such a saturated market. Just sign someone in free agency and overpay somewhat.
  22. Is Kellar definitively a top three pitcher in the playoffs for us? It's probably gausman, bassitt and him? Because the price for him and bednar is going to be a lot. Its the kind of pitcher our front office loves but i thought the reason for that is that they are more attainable. Pittsburgh will want a big price.
  23. I'd agree with that generally but if i'm miami i'm not accepting a lowball offer. I'll take my chances on him getting back to himself and then get ace rental prices next deadline. Or maybe make the playoffs lol. They have carbera, alcantara and perez. Try to win! I also have no idea why they are even considering trading cabrera. That is mental.
  24. He has had a better year than Alcantara.
  25. Most free agents with term or late extensions are bad contracts. All big market teams have bad contracts. That's the point. Baseball is set up so that by the time you can spend money freely on players it isn't good value. If you think that's its a favour to take that contract then charge them. Get prospects back. Money is literally worth less to us than it is to them.
