I really don’t get why people here are so worried about developing front of the line pitching. More often than not, it’s acquired, not developed. Verlander, Cole, Greinke, and Miley were all trades/FA’s.
Fast forward a month and Simeon Woods-Richardson could be putting up similar peripherals in High-A as an 18 year old (entirely possible). How untouchable would he be? Deivi Garcia had a similar rise this year.
As expected, they really seem to value Simeon Woods-Richardson exceptionally highly and Anthony Kay higher than industry consensus as well. Have to admire Atkins sticking to his guns and saying that he stands behind his internal rankings over the industry ones. Given that Simeon was also scouted by the same department that found the likes of Groshans and Kloffenstein in that draft, I’m confident in their ability to find good young draft talent.
That being said, the entire point of finding someone undervalued like a Simeon Woods-Richardson is so you can get more in the deal as well. I maintain that Mets would’ve given up a Dom Smith or David Peterson to get the deal done.
There is zero reason to trade a semi interesting prospect like Cal Stevenson for a guy who so far has shown to be a 4th OF. This seems to completely go against Atkins philosophy of hoarding as many prospects as you can.
Also, Kevin Smith finally reached a 103 wRC+ last night after going 2-for-3 with a HR and a walk. He’s been on fire in July.
19 games, .353/.390/.750, 219 wRC+
Surprised this hasn’t been posted already.
Nate Pearson had the longest outing of his pro career last night: 6 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 5K, 91 pitches.
Here are a few of his blistering fastballs:
If he continues doing as well in High-A as an 18 year old, that’s gonna immediately shoot him up the Top 100. He’d be the youngest pitcher in all of High-A by 2 years.
Makes you wonder why the Padres gave up on him for Taylor Trammell. Even if you think he’s a 1B/DH long term, he should’ve been able to fetch a little more imo.
A very weird trade.
Bauer’s HR/FB is considerably higher than his career norm this year. My point was Bauer does have a higher talent level than Stroman,, but you already mentioned that.
I don’t know. I actually kind of prefer our trade tbh.
Anthony Kay is not that far from Logan Allen in terms of value. Both are projected to be bottom-mid rotation arms and have similar concerns. You could call it a wash between them.
SWR >>>> Franmil though.
If Bauer with 1.5 years of control wasn’t gonna get Kyle Tucker, Marcus Stroman in no way shape or form was gonna get him.
Look at Stromans fWAR page. Bauer is producing almost the same amount of WAR during a season where his results are clearly getting hurt by the juiced ball than Stroman is during his best season.
I think it’s an even deal. I wouldn’t characterize it as great tbh.
The people who legitimately believe we got fleeced or robbed are f***ing numpty’s though.
By that token, doesn’t it make sense that we get one less piece because of that one less year of control?
I don’t know. The trade seems a little more even than I first thought the more I think about it. It’s still one piece away from being a great trade (Dominic Smith or David Peterson would’ve been nice), but as it stands, I think it’s pretty even going by recent years comps.
I do agree that I think this deal could’ve been matched on the day of the deadline, but we’ll see. They must be really really high on SWR and/or Kay.
Is the Stroman trade any worse than the Sonny Gray trade to the Yankees? I’d rather have Woods-Richardson than all 3 of Mateo/Fowler/Kaprellian at the time. He could very easily be the next top pitching prospect in this org.
Was Diekman ever supposed to net anything significant? He’s not exactly having a good year, gives up a good amount of baserunners, and is a rental.
Daniel Hudson is probably more valuable than him.
Huh. I was sure I read somewhere that a player can be outrighted once off the 40-man without being exposed to waivers, but I guess that's not the case. My bad.
Verlander/Cole is a strong 1-2 punch, but they could use a good #3 in the playoffs besides Miley.
It could also be about not wanting to make other AL contenders stronger. Yankees, Twins, and Rays could easily try to get him too.
