    Are you one of those interesting characters that lives completely off of the grid, or simply located in a rural setting? I'd guess that most of us on this board wouldn't be able to raise their own chickens due to city bylaws and whatnot. One of the contractors that I deal with at work built a home which is completely off of the grid and regularly mentions his massive stockpile of guns and ammo that he will readily leverage should s*** really hit the fan.

    Interestingly Yankee Stadium was tied for the worst park when it comes to expected home runs for Soto in 2023, and in most of previous seasons his expected home runs were worse in Yankee Stadium than his actual home stadiums. For his career he simply hasn't been a pull hitter as most of his batted balls go to center field, so he would need to make a conscious swing decision to fully take advantage of the short porch.

    I could see the Yankees trying to expedite this process to get a deal completed before Ohtani makes his decision on where to sign. If Ohtani signs with the Dodgers then the Blue Jays become a serious competitor for Soto, so if the Yankees can get a deal done before that the Jays won't be able to swoop in and deal for Soto under their noses.

    Nor should they try to beat that either. That's an asinine price to pay for a one year rental no matter how good his bat is.

    This all sounds much more likely than assuming the doomsday scenario of Ohtani being unable to pitch in the future and immediately transitioning to DH without even considering shifting to another position while he's still relatively young. I fully agree if Ohtani is able to pitch until some point in his mid 30's it would potentially be an unwise decision to shift him to another position at that point given the increased likelihood of injury that takes him off the field completely.

    Ohtani hasn't played much outfield because he was already pushing his body to its limits by simultaneously starting and DH'ing. I see no reason he wouldn't be able to at least attempt to transition to the outfield if he can't pitch any more. If Ohtani can't play the outfield he could always play first base as well. There is really no reason to continue to frame this discussion that Ohtani would be immediately forced to DH only as soon as starting is off the table.

    Dude you directly stated several times in that post that Ohtani might be a full time DH for the entirety of the contract. There wasn't a single mention that he could play a position on the field if he can't pitch, it was completely binary pitcher/DH.

    The front office was actually really quiet about the Manoah situation. There wasn't a single peep about Alek refusing to report to AAA until Ben Wagner brought it up in interview.

    One shouldn't underestimate how deep Gruber's hatred of Atkins runs. It's on par or greater than Grant's completely irrational hatred of Boston and the Red Sox.

    If the Padres financial situation is as dire as reported they aren't exactly in the driver's seat when it comes to the eventual Soto return. They have to fill out most of their rotation and simultaneously make a sizable cut to their player salary budget. Most of their long term contracts are basically unmovable given as well so the only tangible asset they have to move for real cost savings is Soto.

    I agree the reported asking price from the Padres is absurd, nobody is paying that kind of price a single year of Soto. He's an elite hitter but is essentially a DH masquerading as an outfielder at this point of his career. The one other guy I think would really hurt to see moved would be Enmanuel Bonilla.

    That still leaves an opening in the rotation, as needing to rely on the likes of White and Francis as regular rotation members instead of depth options has a lot lower upside compared to what Manoah can offer assuming at least a partial level of bounceback. I'd guess that Chad Dallas could be considered a pretty realistic depth option compared to Macko who has yet to taste baseball above high A up to this point.

    You seem to think that Alek Manoah is completely ruined and therefore 100% expendable, yet at the same time are saying that he could be the frontliner in a Soto package. If he's as bad as you are claiming why in the world would the Padres be willing to take him in a Soto package?

    I saw it mentioned elsewhere that the deal the Nationals offered Soto was very heavily backloaded, so he'd be relatively underpaid for much of the deal. Perhaps he'd accept a similar deal total value wise over a shorter term so the AAV would be quite a bit higher.

    I'd guess the club wouldn't be terribly motivated to move Bassitt as that reduces the team's starting depth a great deal, and opens up a rotation hole which needs to be filled by another pitcher likely outside of the organization. I would be really surprised if another team was willing to offer any kind of value in return for Springer given the season he just had. I think he will bounce back at least somewhat in 2024, but he's seen his numbers steadily declining since signing with the team. He managed to stay remarkably healthy last season, but perhaps he would benefit from actually playing a bit less in future seasons to keep his body fresh as the season progresses.

    Ricky Romero foolishly pitched through knee pain and ended up ruining his career as his knees were completely ruined. According to the club there was nothing physically wrong with Alek this season, but he and his representatives seem to think he was dealing with shoulder/arm issues so who knows what to believe.

    Yeah you have to give something of value to get a player like Soto for sure. Aside from Manoah and Tiedemann I don't think the club has pitching assets that would be of interest to the Padres who have so many rotation holes to fill. Between the two I'd certainly prefer to move Manoah as I think Tiedemann offers more upside, but just like Manoah Tiedemann also has his own set of question marks as a long term rotation piece.

    I'm in the same boat in that I think it's far too soon to give up on Manoah and ship him out for a mediocre return relative to what he can provide if he returns to form. It's maybe not realistic to expect him to continue providing top of the rotation results as his toolset is more indicative of a mid rotation starter, but having a cheap rotation member like him is key to a team that's worked it's way up to the luxury tax if they want to continue adding established talent.
