  1. Who knows if this was a case where the Jays couldn't beat the Dodgers offer due to eventual ownership constraints, chose not to do so despite ability to match or beat it as it no longer made sense financially, or weren't given an opportunity to match or beat it as Ohtani wanted to play for the Dodgers all along.
  2. You think both Manoah and Tiedemann will be traded? I could maybe see one of these guys traded but it seems unlikely that both would be moved.
  3. If it's a choice between Bellinger or no top free agent at all I'd still prefer Bellinger, but damn I'm really worried about him turning into a pumpkin in the future given how weak his contact profile looks. I wish that we had readily available bat speed numbers so we could more easily gauge when players are losing bat speed or even intentionally not swinging as hard to make more contact. Bellinger dramatically dropped his strikeout numbers and saw a sizable reduction in exit velocity so I wonder if this was the result of simply not swinging as hard. I would have no issues with bringing back Belt for another season if other options like JD Martinez or Hoskins don't pan out.
  4. Something like half (if not even more) of the dollars of this deal seem to be deferred so the Dodgers will likely be right in the middle of the bidding for Yamamoto. That got me to thinking that one way Rogers could flex their financial muscle would be to setup deferred payments on the ultra high end free agents as a means of kicking some of the money down the curb into the future.
  5. From what I could gather they had to up the ante and add a 4th year to the Ryu deal that nobody else was willing to offer. I've also seen it suggested they were the highest bidder for Springer as well. There is nothing wrong with refusing to sign guys at any cost as it just ends up reducing the ability to surround the players with more top talent.
  6. Are you seriously whinging that the front office isn't interested in dramatically overpaying for free agents?
  7. That quite literally sounds like the most boring championship in the history of championships.
  8. Right smack dab in the middle of the neck far as I can tell. I'm simply having a hard time buying that his body shape had much if anything to do with his original disc herniation injury that led to his original surgery.
  9. Damn I can't see why MLB should allow this be approved. Hopefully other teams raise enough of a stink with the commissioner's office to see this kiboshed/reworked so that it actually follows the spirit of the luxury tax.
  10. I just don't see a glaring need to add a high end reliever given the relative strength of the pen at this point. The team has a lot of holes to fill and limited financial bullets to spend so there's likely better ways to spend the necessary cash.
  11. Have you looked at that contract? Discounting the covid shortened season Trout has only averaged about 100 games a season since the start of the 2017 season, and only 79 games over the last 3 seasons. He's due to be paid $35 million a season for the next 7 seasons. Maybe the Angels would agree to pay half of his deal or something, but aside from that acquiring this guy would be like Tulo level of complete breakdown risk x infinity.
  12. Explain to me how this would lead to a chronic neck condition.
  13. I haven't been able to verify for certain one way or the other but the explanations I've seen point to the overall AAV for salary tax purposes not being affected by deferrals.
  14. Prince Fielder had a degenerative neck condition condition that forced him to retire. That was zero to do with how heavy he was unless you think he was carrying an extra 50 pounds of weight in his cheeks or something. That has zero to do with whether to sign Vlad to an extension or not. I'd also be worried as hell signing Vlad to a long term deal given the downside he's shown for much of his career, but if he tears things up the next few seasons on another roster I'd have a really hard time forgiving the front office for trading him away for what is likely to be pennies on the dollar.
  15. f*** that noise man. If the team gave up before they tried they would 100% never attract a true cream of the crop free agent to the organization. There is literally no reason to fault them for trying.
  16. Yeah the NHL finally put an end to these types of deals after teams were skirting the salary cap for years with guys that eventually just retired after they were making peanuts. Allowing a big market team to throw the middle finger to the luxury tax would be the ultimate slap in the face to the rest of baseball.
  17. Absolutely this. There just has to be a point in an auction where you are willing to walk away. The Blue Jays simply don't have the established minor league talent pipeline at this point to continue to surround Ohtani with impact players if they were to outlay this type of cash.
  18. Now I instantly go from convincing myself that Ohtani was worth it at any cost if we managed to snag him and pivot to railing on about what a terrible long term signing it likely would have been.
  19. Come on man, the guy was a 3.5 win player and very well may have hit 4 wins had he not gotten hurt in August.
  20. The first three would be great but we shall see if the team has that type of overall money available with the "unicorn" budget that Ohtani would have reportedly opened up for them.
  21. Don't forgot Ohtani @ 40 as well.
  22. Yeah I simply can't see the league allowing for this as it would be in direct contravention of the purpose of the luxury tax.
  23. That's not exactly a fair characterization that the team would go for bidding seriously on the best free agent in the history of the sport and instead pivot to a s***** utility player but I get where you're coming from.
  24. I see no reason for Hicks to be brought back as the returning pen is already a strength, but I could certainly see the team being in the bidding for Chapman and Bellinger, which unfortunately both have a lot of potential to be terrible contracts in the not too distant future.
  25. Does that have any luxury tax ramifications though? To me the luxury tax hit is the biggest detractor for placing so many eggs into one basket such as this as eventually this could prevent the Dodgers from being able to add enough talent to their minor league pipeline given the increasingly onerous penalties.
