  1. Messi scored his 50th hattrick for Barcelona today:
  2. IMO not much point. Smith Jr can be a future 4th outfielder option with speed, and he has options. You never know though, Pompey could do something and there’s no real harm trying it.
  3. Maybe, I do think he’ll get a fair chance in spring training.
  4. Disagree on Pompey definitely getting claimed, and Travis has options.
  5. I wouldn’t be so sure about that with both Travis and Gurriel getting outfield reps. Still a good chance Pompey is dfa and he’s not a lock to be claimed by another team so could end up at AAA.
  6. Interesting that they class SRF as a reliever. With our lack of quality starters I’d expect him to get an extended chance in the rotation this year.
  7. Cleveland has a weak outfield and they’ve been really cheap this offseason. They must be hoping to get something out of the recent minor league signings of Dioner Navarro, Ryan Flaherty, and Matt Joyce, haha.
  8. TBF it’s not like an elite 26 year old infielder is available in free agency every year, so it’s not likely that they could have acquired a comparable alternative in a year or two.
  9. Machado has a 6 team no trade list, but it’s not been revealed who is on it. Rays, A’s, Jays, and the Orioles 3 times?
  10. His last article:
  11. I like it. This could also help increase interest - more variety to opponents, shake up the divisions, new potential rivals etc. I’d then want to expand the playoffs. Division winners plus best runners up get a bye, next best 4 teams play either a one off or best of 3. That’s still only 8 out of 16/17 teams in the playoffs per league. 3 playoff teams plus 2 wildcards would just be too low otherwise, the majority of teams would be tanking. Maybe knock 8-12 games off the regular season too.
  12. Even though you're wrong about not wanting draws, you'll be pleased to know that the games at this stage of the Champions League are over two legs, so in the second leg they'll play until there is a winner (including the away goals rule).
  13. The only thing I'd add is that from Atkins' comments about "lengthy discussions" it appears they have at least had that initial conversation (which they'd be negligent if they hadn't TBH). I suspect the front office and Stroman's belief on what an extension should look like are too different to enter into serious discussions at this point, but no one really knows.
  14. Yeah I guess. Which would mean that on WAR $ at $8m a year the Padres valued his off the field impact as $4m a year, haha.
  15. It's really quite bizarre that since 2013 in odd years he has a WAR of 3.1, 3.5 then 4.1, compared to even years of -0.2, 0.2, and -0.1. Will 2019 break the trend?
  16. It wouldn't for the player who is the role model. There's also no way to quantify the impact on the others, which is why it can't be included in a spreadsheet, and therefore isn't real to some people.
  17. Well there's no substitute for talent obviously. But a good player with experience who helps younger players can add value that isn't captured by WAR. Practically things like in game advice, but also being a good example in training, preparation, routine etc. Role models can help some people in "real life" especially for younger less experienced people, so it's just common sense that it'd translate to sports too.
  18. That's the thing - and TBF the Padres are the same - the on field performance has to be good as well. Heyward and Hosmer went from a combined 9.7 WAR in their free agent years to 0.9 WAR in the first year of their free agent deals. It doesn't matter how much clubhouse leadership you provide at that point, i.e. see Tulo.
  19. You can do better than that, haha. A "reporter" tries to ask questions and he doesn't even know who the players are. That's like a stereotype of the classic baseball analytics basement dwelling nerd who just looks at spreadsheets and never watches the games haha.
  20. A team that isn't expected to be a contender for at least a year being willing to spend in free agency is good, but yeah it shouldn't take away from career earnings for the majority of players not being fair value.
  21. Haha, ********: Padres clubhouse reacts to adding Eric Hosmer Friars on Hosmer: "I couldn't be more excited" San Diego clubhouse features multiple former Royals, who rave about new first baseman
