    You’d think concussions are only really an issue in contact sports, but yeah Pompey has been unlucky. For baseball position players it’s got to be knee injuries that are the worst, pretty much everything they do requires putting pressure on the knee joints.

    That’s what revenue sharing is meant to be for, not to increase the profits of the owners. And no one expects them to be competing with the payroll of the Yankees, just to not be so consistently cheap.

    The Rays get an estimated $45million a year in revenue sharing, that’s nearly the same as their entire payroll. They are in a s***** market with a terrible stadium so absolutely they aren’t in the market for the real big contracts. But you’re deluded if you think they not only can’t afford but aren’t deliberately penny pinching by not spending more on player contracts (not just free agents but trading / getting rid of their own players to save money). Again the Rays are not rebuilding, they are cheap. They should be relocated, it’s not like they’d be missed by their practically non-existent fanbase.

    That makes it even worse! If they were rebuilding it’d be more acceptable. The fact that they have done quite well shows that if they weren’t so tight fisted they’d could actually be a contender.

    Teams like the Rays could easily afford to sign big free agents (that aren’t the Harper level mega deals) but they are too cheap. According to spotrac their payroll this season is $52m. That’s a disgrace for a team that isn’t in a full rebuild. That’s about what they will get from revenue sharing and is about 35% of the average across the league. The Rays owners don’t care about trying to win, they are solely in it for the money, and they are bad for baseball. In summary, f*** the Rays.

    Well it’s clear that if Elvis wasn’t a rule 5 pick he’d be no where near the 25 man. So even if he manages to stick around, he’s almost certainly not going to be on the 25 man next year. Normally you’d expect him to up to 3 or 4 years away if he makes it at all. IMO he has a better chance of developing by having a more normal career progression, gaining experience and working on his skills in the minors. Unfortunately that means it’s probably not going to be with the Jays. Most rule 5 picks fail anyway, but the ones that do work are normally players who are older, more experienced, and just take their chance. It’s very rare that a rule 5 pick sucks but still sticks all year and then pays off in later seasons.

    Possibly, but if he’s going to get hit all over the park every time he plays, is only using him sparingly and in blow outs really going to help his development?

    I don’t remember it that way, someone started a Elvis stats prediction thread and a lot of the comments were along the lines of predicting he wouldn’t make it out of spring training. Elvis making the team and sticking all season as a teenage pitcher who has never appeared above rookie ball would be unprecedented.
