TBH I’d rather Gurriel get those LF at bats and Travis is sent to the minors to act as depth. I’m not sure that Travis’ knees will ever allow him to be a full time contributor again. -

It’s so subjective, haha. I dislike that tigers logo, and one of my favourite is the Padres hat (admittedly it’s not very inventive but I love the colour scheme and font) which the author seems to hate for some reason! -
My personal favourite deferred salary deal is Chris Davis getting paid until 2037. $3.5m a year until 2032 then $1.4m a year until 2037. He’s not even worth $3.5m a year right now!

Completely correct. Tanking and the mentality of win or bust is awful for fans, but it is incentivised by the draft and closed league system. The 162 games and only 6+4 teams making the playoffs magnifies the issue. I know it’d never happen in MLB, but in European sports the threat of relegation means excitement for fans of all teams not just title contenders, and every game is important. Not sure what the answer is here. Your other point is also spot on. One of the reasons sports are so popular is that it gives you a chance to talk to your mates about your favourite players and teams. Debates about who is the best, whether so and so is overrated etc. Analytics in baseball are by far the most relevant and accurate, you can literally see who is the best player by looking it up on a spreadsheet. That is boring to the majority of people. Advanced stats in sports like NBA aren’t as valid or reliable because of the vast number of variables so if anything they can aid a debate but not end one.

The NFL is the perfect example of how limited, spaced out games allow hype to be built up. On paper there’s no reason why NFL should be significantly more popular than MLB. Both appeal to American patriotism, both are sports with lots of stoppages and little actual game time, both have long histories with iconic teams and players, both have billionaire owners with lots of surplus cash for marketing etc. But team’s playing one game a week allow fans time to reflect “you see that touchdown?” “Can’t wait to see how the team react in the next game” etc. In baseball any regular season game looked at in isolation is irrelevant. The very best teams still lose 50+ games, and they play the same team multiple days in a row.

If the only change was reducing the game time then no it wouldn't make a significant difference. That shouldn't be the only change, but IMO it should be a part of the way the commissioner does his job to try to encourage new fans. Just because baseball is regional now, doesn't mean it has to stay that way.

It’s not dumb to try to speed the game up, if there are sensible ways to do it (e.g. like Jim’s idea of stopping relievers throwing multiple warm up pitches from the mound). Downtime in any sport is normally a bad thing, and baseball is almost as bad as American Football for delays. As existing baseball fans, we are not the target audience for the changes.

Yeah baseball is seen as the most traditional of the main North American sports, which appeals to a lot of the existing fanbase but doesn’t do well in attracting new fans. The unwritten rules ******** is not a good selling point to new fans. For example basketball has changed significantly to encourage exciting play, plus the marketing of their stars since Jordan has made NBA popular around the world. There’s no magic change that’ll “fix” MLB, but changing nothing is not a sensible option when the other existing flaws with the sport exist too.

Yeah with every game online now even if you wanted to watch a Yankees vs Red Sox game, it’d probably mean skipping your own team’s game that day.

It’s not just the lack of marketing of the stars, there are far too many games to maintain mainstream viewer interest. When every team plays nearly every day there’s no such thing as a “game of the week” to hype up.

This trade restricts their space but they can probably sign one big free agent with some creative roster management. Plus they should sign Ricky Rubio to become a fully European team!

Jansen is our starting catcher and was only 10-15 games away from losing rookie status last year. It’s possible he’s been excluded from consideration.

Except we were a playoff team when Goins and Barney were here, now it doesn't matter as much. As others have said, this move is all about not having to have Urena on the roster, when he's not good enough. In the minors Urena has a (small) chance to improve enough to eventually stick.

Exactly, unless and until we are ready to compete, it's basically irrelevant whether we can fill out the roster between at 1B or 3B with a better / cheaper player. In isolation Vlad would be more valuable if he can play a passable 3B, it's where he's played in the minors, and it's where he apparently would prefer to play.

I really don't think it is for Vlad. If (when) he eventually moves off of 3B it's because he's too fat.

I didn't know that his lifetime ban had been lifted.

A-Rod definitely a better all round prospect as he was a shortstop. If we’re including pitchers then Stephen Strasburg was just as hyped as Vlad too.
