  1. You're missing the point entirely (unless you're joking of course!) - Morales was not rated as an all star level by the Padres or anyone else.
  2. I do agree that its importance is overblown, especially by old school sports people. However, I do think clubhouse leadership can help. Pretending it doesn't matter at all is a flaw of analytics IMO. Players are human after all. For context, they weren't saying that they were only signing him as a leader, but they were saying that it was a big part of why they'd identified him as a target compared to other all star level infielders (as they and many others rated him at the time).
  3. Does he go back to 3B to allow Tatis to play SS? Or vice versa? Will be interesting to see, considering Manny sees himself as a SS.
  4. I went to a Padres game at the beginning of last season and they were all talking about how they loved Hosmer's leadership abilities and they'd targeted him to help with the expected influx of younger players over the next few years. And if he provided somewhere close to his usual odd year Royals performances they'd be very happy with him. Even though the contract was an overpay (and looks even worse now) they really wanted him and so they decided to give him an above market value contract. Considering the payroll flexibility from having the majority of the team built on prospects, and how much they wanted him, I can understand why they did it. Even in a worst case scenario where he remains even year Hosmer (i.e. zero WAR a season) the wasted cash shouldn't really harm them too much as the contract is front loaded. Of course if that did happen they'd get a lot of stick for paying $20m a year for veteran presence!
  5. Just as big a deal for the game as wages, is teams not calling up elite prospects in seasons where the team isn’t competitive. Ideally that’s exactly when elite prospects should be playing, as any rookie mistakes they make aren’t that important. Service time manipulation has to be addressed! Perhaps a change to rule 5, reducing the years allowed to stay off the 40 man for top prospects? Not sure how a top prospect would be defined though.
  6. I don’t know about that, a lot of veterans hate arbitration as if it goes to a hearing you basically have to listen to your team list all your flaws. If arbitration came in for young players just starting their careers I’d want the process to be a lot more objective.
  7. And Pillar, even though he can’t hit and is only a 2-3 WAR player depending on fWAR or bWAR.
  8. Translation: “Stroman wants ace level money. f*** that.”
  9. If Stroman would sign a reasonable extension I’d be happy with that. But I suspect he’d be after an ace level deal.
  10. Does Toronto have any indoor Golf cafes? They are fairly popular in the UK (especially in winter). You use real clubs and balls, hit it into a screen and then the course is virtual. As well as real courses you can play “fantasy” like on top of skyscrapers. It even allows for boosts (e.g. plus 25 yards) so beginners can play together with golfers. It’s fun, but I find that putting is really difficult as the sensors don’t pick up the ball properly for that bit.
  11. We've never been able to embed videos directly into the main forum, just the off topic forum. You can convert a video to a GIF and insert it as a photo though, like so:
  12. What’s The Matter With Tampa Bay? Interesting article on why the Rays are a prime candidate for relocation.
  13. Joakim Noah
  14. We’ve been linked to Romo, we have a weak back end of the rotation, and Montoyo has experience of openers from the Rays and hasn’t ruled out using them. So you can safely add us to the list of teams that’ll use an opener at some point this year!
  15. He made exciting / risky trades, had a team that hit tonnes of homeruns, and took us to the playoffs for the first time in years. People like to be entertained.
  16. TBF Dickey had just won the Cy Young, and as a knuckleballer his age wasn’t particularly an issue. Still a bad trade that got even worse, with Dickey only being ok and Syndergaard turning into Thor.
  17. But by the same logic, a few good trades / free agents / players making a step up can transform a team. The mentality of either we’re a challenger for the championship or we need to tank is defeatist in basketball IMO.
  18. Did you not see him pitch last year, haha. As an outfielder he’d be one of the best in the MLB, top 5 for sure. But as the modern Babe Ruth he’s the most exciting player in baseball. In this particular case, f*** analytics, I want entertainment.
  19. Can’t wait to watch Ohtani dominate again this season.
  20. The people who like the no DH in the NL appreciate that the manager’s lineup and pitcher changes are more meaningful and the perceived increased strategy. They think it’s worth the trade off of one less hitter in the lineup. TBF I think quite a few of those fans are traditionalists and allow that to influence their opinions.
