  1. No one questions that Vlad will eventually be a 1B/DH, the question is when. An average 3B for 3-5 years would be a good to great outcome and the Front Office and coaches must believe they can get that out of him otherwise he wouldn't still be at 3B in the minors.
  2. On the whole I lean towards being anti-union. I've always worked in the private sector so if my employer decides to make redundancies then tough s***. While I appreciate that unions can help people have rights, I do think they go too far in many instances - e.g. the transport unions in Europe are f***ed because they won't accept that modern trains don't need as many people to run them, so the unions are always striking when cuts are proposed. IMO union strikes shouldn't be allowed for public services like emergency services and transport. Specifically in baseball, a union for umpires just creates a cartel. It's unnecessary and discourages advances that would help the game (like video tech, and sacking Angel Hernandez).
  3. Who the hell is Shawn Morimando? I've never heard of him.
  4. Nah trade Giles (to the Red Sox?) and let someone else pay him when he's in his 30's.
  5. I too don't mind Buck but Pat brings out the worst in him.
  6. Haha, if being a sports fan was entirely rational then it’d be a very different world!
  7. Sportsmen that appear to graft and/or work hard are popular with casual fans in every sport. It’s not exclusive to hockey or to Canada. Many fans would give anything to be in the player’s place and appreciate that a player who works hard is doing everything for their team.
  8. Yeah he was rated higher by some pundits, but was at least passable and he was just as fat as Vlad. It would be disappointing if Vlad followed Panda's career path though - eating himself out of the game after signing away from us in free agency.
  9. Guerra is also out of options.
  10. Yeah, before we managed to trade Morales I didn't think there would be a market for Smoak as a 1B. But if we can get a few interesting prospects then might as well get rid. I'm not very keen on an extension for Smoak as in theory he's easily replaceable in free agency if none of our potential 1B prospects work out. I wouldn't necessarily give Tellez the full time 1B job though, we'd probably see us acquire another ultra cheap veteran and then Tellez can rotate through 1B / DH.
  11. Miggy didn't switch to 1B until his sixth season when he was in his mid 20's. Vlad is never going to be an elite 3B (and we're not going to see him play a year in the outfield like Miggy did) but I think everyone here would be happy if we managed to get 5 seasons of Vlad playing a passable 3B.
  12. There’s a fascinating article in the Sports Illustrated MLB preview edition about the use of tech to analyse pitching. Cameras, motion tech and even VR. Apparently when the Astros signed Verlander their tech (stuff that the Tigers didn’t use) identified issues with his slider and two seam fastball, he made adjustments and results improved. The Astros and Dodgers are mentioned as leading the field, with a few teams like the Marlins described as having the tech but not having the right people to analyse the results. We’re not mentioned but it does say “virtually” every team has similar resources now.
  13. So why acquire Brito at all if he's not being sent to replace Alford at AAA? We don't need a 5th outfielder on the roster.
  14. OK I didn't realise that. That makes no sense then. If Brito has to be DFA to be sent to AAA what if someone claims him (last year's wRC+ of 26 must be tempting haha)? Surely we could have got someone on a minor league deal, there is no point in moving Pillar if Alford doesn't take his spot.
  15. I remember Leandro Barbosa crying when he was at the Phoenix Suns (and they were good) and his teammates told him he'd been traded to the Knicks as an April Fools, haha.
  16. He’s loved by the fans who go to the games, is the longest serving player, and came from nowhere to be a contributor on some really good teams, following which he’s seen nearly all his colleagues leave. I’d be shocked if it didn’t effect him emotionally.
  17. I would have preferred to keep Smith Jr over Pompey at the time, but let’s be realistic - Smith Jr is very unlikely to ever be more than a 4th outfielder for a half decent team so it’s no great loss.
  18. It’s just AAA outfield depth to replace Alford.
  19. I don’t like that it doesn’t go away between pitches, it’s a bit distracting when the catcher is throwing the ball to the mound, the batter is walking around etc.
