  1. Justin Smoak Pros He's not very good. Perfect big league player to package with a prospect to obtain a salary dump player (i.e. Low cost starter to fill 1B until a prospect is ready to start could be worth something to some teams) Cons Hard to see anyone give up anything useful. We have no other 1B if Edwin doesn't re-sign.
  2. Dalton Pompey Pros Appears to have all the tools. A change of scenery could kick start his career. Gibbons doesn't appear to trust him, likely as a direct result of his poor start to 2015 being attributed to being "unprepared mentally". Cons If he puts it all together he could be a controllable, solid contributor for years. We are short on quality outfielders.
  3. Kevin Pillar Pros His value will likely never be higher. His defense will eventually decline, when that happens he's useless. Cons Elite defense more than makes up for poor offense. Low salary with years of control. Already short on outfielders.
  4. Devon Travis Pros Injury prone, with Tulo always a injury risk gives us a chance to get a middle infielder we can rely on to be in the lineup every day. Not the best defensively. Cons When fit, excellent offensive player. Still young, injuries may simply be bad luck
  5. Trade options: Note I'm not advocating any of these trades, just listing players I consider most likely to be available if we want to enter the trade market. Happ & Estrada Pros Sell high. Starting pitching depth is the team's strength, easiest place to give up something for a gain elsewhere. Cons Reasonable salaries. Reliable starters.
  6. If we don't bring back any of the major free agents, and strike out in free agency, our trade assets are limited without weakening the team and/or needing to replace the traded player.
  7. In my mate's op he had a similar diagnosis, and had to have the bit of cartilage removed. He's on crutches and been told he'll be back to 100% in 6 to 8 weeks. He has had a knee op before though so maybe that's why it's such a long time. Not that it really matters - Travis is not going to be doing much until spring training anyway.
  8. Mate of mine recently had a similar op - recovery time is 6-8 weeks.
  9. If we win this series, anyone who said series is over today should have their account deleted. It's not over until the final out.
  10. 12 pitch inning = good start for Happ.
  11. It's weird hearing EJ call baseball instead of hosting Inside the NBA, but he's pretty good.
  12. Stating the obvious but a big game today - hopefully we score early so the GDT isn't quite as bad to read as yesterday. 7 games is a long series - stay positive!
  13. I'd be interested to know if you'd sign EE to a four year deal if money was no object? There's a chance a deal isn't done without a 4th year. I appreciate by the 4th year that's a chance he's a replacement level DH, but believe he'd be better than anyone we could get in free agency for at least 1 year (while still playing 1B for maybe 50 games next year), and be around a 3 WAR contributor in years 2 and 3 (barring injury which if he's a DH by then wouldn't necessarily be a higher risk than a younger position player).
  14. Ignoring money I don't think anyone would try to argue we'd be better without EE. So logically if a contract offer is in budget then we should try to come to a deal with him, rather than just offering the QO and walking away.
  15. Exactly, a 4 year contract at no more than $25m per year isn't going to completely cripple the franchise. It would be an overpayment, but it's worth it and affordable in the future budget IMO. But if that doesn't get it done, then OK we'll have to move on.
  16. Did you go to a game while there? It was the offseason when I went, but I did go to a Sumo tournament in Tokyo.
  17. Restaurant staff will refuse to accept tips as well which makes eating out even cheaper. Despite that, Japan is the place where I've experienced the best service - they must just pay staff a fair wage.
  18. A five year deal that expires next year. It'll be interesting to see what happens. Maybe they'll renew with a max price cap, or decide they can make more money doing it themselves.
  19. A lot of English teams do exactly this. If you can't go, you effectively sell it back to the team, they then sell it on and are able to charge an admin fee. Also works for season ticket holders who can't attend a specific game. This potentially would be a large revenue stream for MLB and I wouldn't be surprised to see it introduced one day.
  20. Selling for more than 10 - 20% over face value should be illegal. I have no issue with being able to recoup your cash if you can no longer go, but too many people buy tickets they never intend on using, just to make money. Ticket touters are illegal in England, though you still see a few outside stadiums and online sites can claim "admin fees" to sell at higher prices.
  21. Both the Indians and the Sox should be saying that about us - except ours is a six game streak.
  22. http://sportsday.dallasnews.com/texas-rangers/rangers/2016/10/09/rangers-starting-rotation-real-losers-alds Yeah they don't say who it ties with, but you're right about it being bad. In the playoffs all you can ask from your starters is to give you a chance to win, and they didn't really do that for them.
  23. Just read that the Rangers' starters had an ERA of 13.94, which ties for the worst ever in a playoff series.
  24. I think they do and hope for a bounce back season - he's only 26.
