  1. It wasn't steroids, he was suspended for a stimulant that he said was in one of those strength powder drinks you get in health stores. For once in these situations, his story seemed believable.
  2. Liriano is still available too.
  3. Yeah, TBH I'm a bit disappointed we signed Granderson as I'd rather those 3 get more at bats to develop. He was truly awful for the Dodgers and didn't even make the World Series roster.
  4. For me the biggest weakness is the outfield. Pearce is a terrible outfielder (who should be strictly at 1B / DH) and Carrera isn't much better. Pillar is one step back on defense from being replacement level. Granderson is 50/50 whether he's completely past it and ready for retirement. Everyone else is unproven or not ready yet. Still, if at least one of Hernandez and Alford emerge as genuine starters, it'll make the outfield look much better.
  5. Hopefully Mayza is good when he gets his chance, but he’s not guaranteed to be better than Breslow (or anyone else on the roster). It’s efficient roster management to give players without options a chance first when we’ll need multiple relievers over a season.
  6. Loup is a lock for the bullpen - but we only have 4 realistic options (plus maybe Girodo) as lefty relievers so even if Mayza doesn't start in the bullpen he should get a chance at some point (along with Dermody). IMO unless we sign another then Breslow doesn't have to do much in spring training to secure the 2nd lefty role because if he doesn't make it we're down to 3 as he's unlikely to want to play in the minors at this point in his career. Though TBF if he does really suck in ST then we'll likely sign another low cost veteran lefty anyway.
  7. Brent Honeywell sounds like the name of a hero from a badly written action film.
  8. Dellin Betances fell out massively re arbitration with the Yankees last year. A team has to argue why a player is not worth the salary they are asking for, obviously that's going to piss off a lot of people. Imagine asking for a raise at your work and been given a list of reasons why you don't deserve one! EDIT: sorry for your loss.
  9. To be fair, arbitration hearings will always have teams presenting negative things about players, and no player is going to be happy with that. FWIW Stroman followed up with:
  10. Not if Breslow shows anything in Spring Training - Breslow and Loup are both out of options. Then when Breslow starts to fail or is injured, Mayza has a good chance of being called up.
  11. Then why sign Granderson who blocks both Hernandez (who was projected to start in RF) and Alford?
  12. Osuna Biagini Tepera Loup Barnes Breslow Alburquerque Then first called up are: Ramirez Dermody / Mayza I think our bullpen is going to be a strength for us this year. The only relievers out of options are Loup and the 3 veteran minor league signings with spring training invites. We can rotate players to keep them fresh and use people who are in form. My pick for this year's Leone (i.e. best of the rest) is Ramirez.
  13. It also means Ohtani can pitch once and DH 2 or 3 times a week. I wonder if this was always part of their pitch to him.
  14. I think it’s unrealistic to expect to win >85 or <75 games with this roster, so anticipating a middle of the pack team is just being sensible. However, one of the things that makes sport exciting is you don’t know what can happen. So finding out how many things go wrong or right this year is going to be interesting, with the added bonus of determining the future of the franchise for the next 3-5 years (i.e. rebuild or no rebuild).
  15. I’ve been pretty consistent this offseason, a wildcard is a bonus this year, but IMO we’re in a lot better shape that a lot of people here think. The season lives and dies on some prospects succeeding and the injury status of the starters, JD and the middle infield.
  16. I don’t necessarily disagree, you asked for a list of big moves that didn’t kickstart the free agent market.
  17. I know, it doesn’t really matter, he’s not really a prospect and will never appear in the minors.
  18. We’re a middle of the pack team this year with a chance of above or below .500, depending on injuries and form. We’ve certainly got a chance of making the playoffs, but we’re not one of the favourites. If Sanchez is fit then that’s the equivalent of signing a top of the rotation starter too.
  19. Ohtani, Cain, Wade Davis, plus the trades of Stanton and Yelich.
  20. Yeah but that’s because Ohtani isn’t in 3 of them. So if he isn’t being penalised then the only 3 that both appear in, Ohtani has the better ranking.
  21. Ohtani was only ranked in 3 lists, and was top in 2 of them - so shouldn’t he be ranked top using your methodology?
  22. In a rebuild we’ll have tons of payroll space and can afford to carry Tulo. In a developing contender team he can provide veteran leadership to the young infield of Bichette and Gurriel. His contract reduces to $14m in 2020 too.
  23. It also means that if everything goes wrong a rebuild can be done fairly easily without being too controversial, but also if everything goes right there’s capacity to upgrade the team without too much disruption.
