  1. FTFY! Glory's original point (which I agree with) wasn't that the system needs to be torn up, but that it needs to be adjusted. The closed system and salary caps of the North American sports means that mandated contract limits for the first few years are sensible. The nature of baseball player development and the almost unique situation where a draftee isn't expected to contribute for years (if at all) makes baseball's salary rules stricter than others, which is again understandable. The MLB system is set up so that in theory the first few years a player is underpaid, and then when they hit free agency they are compensated by being overpaid. However, we're potentially seeing a trend where front offices are no longer as willing to pay for past performance, and are much more mindful of committing funds to aging players. As in Glory's original point a change to the system could help to alleviate this. Whether that's changing how arbitration is handled, bringing free agency forward, or something else, is debatable.
  2. O’s and Britton have now agreed at $12m.
  3. It happens in soccer, cricket, and both forms of rugby, which are the main non North American team sports. It’s because with competition you can’t have a salary cap, and therefore you can’t restrict wages, because players will just go abroad to somewhere where they can get paid.
  4. Wells as a Blue Jay was “only” paid a high of $21m, as we traded him in his more expensive 2011 year. So technically if JD stays all year he’ll be the highest paid Blue Jay.
  5. Not in a performance driven marketplace like sport it isn’t. Because the main North American sports are closed systems with no realistic competition from other leagues then they can have such rules. But in any worldwide sport, players are paid based on talent first and seniority second.
  6. Haha, nothing with him specifically- he’s simply an example of a player being paid significantly more than genuine MVP level stars.
  7. I think they’d ask for Bo & Vlad+.
  8. One of the reasons why Yelich will likely be very expensive is that the Marlins don’t actually want to trade him (unlike Stanton / Gordon) but may be forced to as he wants to leave. So it’s fairly unlikely that they’d settle for anything else other than a trade that’d gut our system, and that Shatkins would never do.
  9. Agree with you there. Even if we sign a starting LF, it’s likely Pearce that would be the one to not play as much in the outfield, or be traded.
  10. Loup's agreed a deal at $1.8125m too.
  11. That's the perfect example of why the players are being screwed. A system so flush with money that a Tommy Hunter can be paid $9m a year because he's 31 and been around for years, but stars like Correa and Bryant are paid small fractions of their market worth because of artificially keeping contracts low in the first few years of a player's career, is a system that is at best deeply unfair, and at worst is broken.
  12. Nah, that’s Hernandez. Carrera will play the same role he has for the last few seasons. Though it would have been a bad move to let him go when we only have 1 MLB established OF, plus Pearce.
  13. Also - Gibby seemed to be assuming Hernandez would be starting when he was interviewed late last year. I think he’ll get a fair chance. IMO he’d have to be really bad to not at least be Carrera’s mid-term replacement as 4th outfielder, with a chance of being a starter if he does reasonably well.
  14. Yeah that really screws the O's - they'll have to pay him in arbitration, he won't help the team (assuming they're out of the playoff picture by the time he's back), and they may struggle to trade him at the deadline if he isn't back to full fitness.
  15. At the moment the 5th to 7th starters are all players who have had limited or no starts in the majors - Biagini, Guerrieri, McGuire, and maybe Borucki and Pannone too. I remain convinced signing another starter is the way to go, ideally a Lynn or Cobb especially as Happ and Estrada are in the final years of their contracts. All of the above have options left so they can rotate in to replace injured players and hope at least one of them succeeds.
  16. Yeah, I'm optimistic that at least a few prospects will make it. If this season is OK and Vlad and Bo are ready at some point in 2019 we could be very good again in less than 2 years with sensible additions. I can't see any way that happens if we started a rebuild now, and if a rebuild starts in 6-12 months, I don't really think it'll significantly delay the length of a rebuild. Although some players will be worth less in trades (noticeably JD) I think it's worth the risk waiting rather than starting a rebuild right now when there is still a reasonable chance it will be unnecessary.
  17. I wouldn’t be opposed to signing Chris Tillman on a 1 year deal for the 5th rotation spot. After his 2017 was ruined by injuries he’ll be looking to rebuild his value.
  18. This season is important as it determines whether a rebuild happens or not. For me it’s all about whether some prospects can establish themselves, and ensuring we have a strong core for Bo and Vlad to join. A wildcard would be a bonus for this year, but not a necessity IMO. Depending on whether the team is sold or not, we could be in a great position to add one or two expensive free agents from the 2019 gold mine free agency to quickly be a top club again. Rogers has shown in the last few years that the money is there to improve the team if competing is a realistic goal. However, if people like Hernandez, Alford and Gurriel have bad years, and people like Travis, Sanchez, Stroman and Osuna miss significant time with injuries, we have a losing season and end up in a full rebuild.
  19. Yeah and Pearce can also play in the field on days when we need the DH for someone else who needs a rest (like Travis). Morales just clogs up a roster spot if he isn’t hitting.
  20. Alford will be called up from AAA and is the back up CF if Pillar is out for any significant length of time. As you say, Carrera is pencilled in to fill in for the handful of games at CF where Pillar is rested.
  21. If the Royals fail to resign either Hosmer or Cain then they’ll likely go full rebuild. In that case, they might bring Morales back as a sop to the fans, but would probably demand a prospect too. Maybe we could offer Pompey, who is blocked here but still has a chance of being a MLB player elsewhere IMO.
  22. Someone called Jared Carkuff is the 2nd player sent to the Padres in the trade. A reliever apparently.
  23. I wonder if we now see Travis tested in LF in spring training? If it worked it’d protect his dodgy knees a bit more than 2B.
