    You mean I can't cherry pick stats to prove my point? WTF is this world coming to??? OK if I must, Upton's 4 year wRC+ average puts him 38th in baseball over that 4 year stretch.......amongst those listed ahead of him - Jaso, Belt, Duda & B.Moss. I don't consider any of them to be great hitters - nor do I consider Upton to be a great hitter. If I'm locking up a guy for 6 years and committing 10-15% of my annual budget to him and he's a guy who strikes out a ton and brings little defensively to the table - he better at least be a great hitter.

    I guess 'great' is subjective and in retrospect, a wRC+ of 123 was 38th best in baseball last year (for qualified hitter), which isn't too shabby. That said - Logan Forsyth, Lucas Duda, and Kendrys Morales all finished with a higher wRC+ and I don't consider any of them to be 'great' hitters. I guess suggesting he's a "23% above average hitter" would be most accurate. Regardless - not something I'd lock up long term and make a core player, especially when you consider he's playing a below average LF.

    I must be the only one who doesn't think Upton is worth it. Don't get me wrong, he's a nice player, but he isn't the type of 'core' player I'd be handing a long term contract to, nor would I want him eating up 10%+ of our budget. He's a high strikeout guy who doesn't bring much defense to the table. He isn't a 'great' bat either, averaging a wRC+ of 123 over the past 4 years. For me, a lot of his value is tied to his durability and good base running (which we should assume would decline over the 2nd half of this contract). He reminds me of a Carmelo Anthony in the NBA. Nice player, puts up the numbers, but you'll never win when he's one of your core guys eating up a lot of your budget (sorry, can't think of another good comp off the top of my head....maybe Cespedes, which is kind of ironic.

    who decides if the Jays are a file and trial team? I assume Shapiro? Were they during the Beeston/AA regime? (I think the answer is yes).

    Could we assume arbitration in baseball is a little easier than when required for non-sport contract matters? I mean each side is generally going to site previous cases, tack on some inflation, throw in some 'soft' factors and then the arbitrator will make a decision. This isn't some divorce case where one side is going to throw out claims that the other neglected their kids or wasted their cash with cheap hookers or something.

    If that was the case (and it was open ended) - they should have settled for $14M, made the Nats pony up the money, split the profit with Storen and used the left over to sign Blanton!!!

    What about the Vernon Wells deal? What about getting Travis for Gose? Even getting Marcum for Lawrie was a steal - even though Lawrie never did fulfill his potential (although he did help us get Donaldson). He didn't get the reputation of being a ninja for nothing. AA had his negatives, but he was good at drafting (and finding loop holes in the drafting system) and at making trades. Simple as that.

    Good news is we still have LaCava & Tinnish, who were instrumental in the Jays recent drafting success. When GM's draft, they rely heavily on their scouting department right.....

    The guys I've bolded are nothing at this point. There's a very good chance Shapiro drafted similar guys who never became ML ballplayers; however, since you didn't follow the Cleveland system like you do the Jays - you've omitted them from the list. If you exclude those guys from AA's list - it's not nearly as impressive.

    Does anyone think the Jays will be reluctant to put Osuna in the rotation based on his inverted W mechanics and the possibility it will prevent him from every becoming a durable starting pitcher?

    Most teams would be screwed if both the LF and RF had long-term injuries. That said, we probably have a higher probably of getting screwed due to Saunder's missing meniscus and Jose's age.
