Actually - you missed the point entirely. When you're facing elite pitchers, players will often eliminate certain pitches, or certain locations because it's simply too hard to cover everything. Given how hard seemingly everyone throws out of the bullpen these days, I think you're seeing this more often. I'm sure you'll argue "but what about right down the middle!"....although I don't think that's happened as much as you think.
The casual fans says "that's too close to take" as if players should be able to cover every pitch, in every location, including a few inches off the plate in all directions when the guys throwing 96 MPH. Easier said than done man. I guess they could cut their swing WAYYY down to do that...but that might be counterproductive vs. assuming the ump is going to do his job correctly more often than not.
This sounds like something Goose Gossage would promote...
