    All I know is there was a time when someone brought poker chips to every house party I went to and there was interest from almost everyone there to play. That's completely died off over the past 4-5 years. Even when someone brings the chips - half the guys aren't interested. I don't think that's a result of the US banning online gambling sites. It was a just a fad. UFC seems similar. It was new - everyone wanted to check it out....they did, lost interest and it faded into the background. Maybe I'm just old and kids changed things. I have a friend who's a professional online poker player. Has been for 10+ years now. Put himself through university with it and lives in downtown Toronto driving a Land Rover. Brilliant guy. He doesn't tried to be the best, he just learned to prey on amateurs who basically give him their money online. It's a good gig...although he said he's growing tired of it and is looking to change professions.

    I'm sure there's a core fan base - I must just be sheltered from it. I mean I see the commercials and you see Dana White on TV every once in awhile (he reminds me of Vince McMahon for some reason), but I work in an office with over 50 people (mostly men) couldn't tell you the last time it came up in discussion (maybe when Rousey lost?). I couldn't name one person I know who follows it closely. I had friends who bought the PPV regularly back when it was GSP & Silva to have the boys over. Haven't done that in years now. Reminds me of hold'em poker. Seems like it was a new fad that's lost it's luster outside of the core fans.

    One could argue we'd be better off giving the 4th OF spot to Pompey and see what he can provide. 4th OFers typically get a full season worth of AB's - time to see what the kid has. If Upton is "free" - you might be able to convince some team he's worth a LH reliever.

    I hear you. You could go a step further and sign Moss instead of Jose and let Pearce play 1st vs. LHP. Moss doesn't have Jose's bat - but we add another draft pick when Jose signs elsewhere. Adding 2 FA's and giving Pompey an opportunity isn't a bad option if we're looking to re-tool this team (while taking a step back in 2017). If everything breaks the right way (Pompey gives you 2+ WAR, Moss gives you 130 wRC+, Pearce plays 150 games, Upton rebounds, etc.) - you could still slide into a playoff spot.

    If we do re-sign Jose for 2-3 years - I'd want to have this discussion with him upfront. If we're out of it - we're dealing ya bud. Don't like it? Call the O's again or go play for Boston for free. Heck I'd even see if we could write it in his contract that he waives all 10-5 rights. f*** him, he has no leverage right now.

    Has anyone heard what the market is for Ivan Nova? Much like Happ - Nova was lights out with Pittsburgh last year (1.9 WAR in 11 starts). He'll only be 30 next year, high GB%, low BB%, no draft pick attached and he doesn't seem to be generating a lot of buzz. Could you swoop in and pick him up for 3 years $33M or something? I don't want to trade Stro or Sanchez at all, but I'd love to see what we could get for Happ or Estrada right now.
