  1. But man - they spend lots of money!
  2. I mean - I guess??? The discussion here is on overspending on FA's. Inking Wade Miley to a 1 year $4.5M deal and Robinson Chirinos to a 1 year $5.75M deal don't really count. You could add in the Josh Reddick signing. He was good for 1 year, but is now somewhat of a dud. In general, the Astros have made savy, short term, low risk FA signings. The big one they made was extending Altuve - which they more than likely won't get any excess value out of and may soon regret. We'll see what they do with Cole here...
  3. Lester - great Lackey - OK Heyward - terrible Darvish - terrible Kimbrel - undecided This hasn't been an excellent path for the Cubbies
  4. Sorry - you were suggesting having a GM who doesn't overspend can be a bad thing. Typically - overspending occurs in free agency. Extending your own players typically comes at a lower cost (as there are risk to both sides). Overspending on free agents has been proven over and over again to be the fool's gold approach. Some of you are getting all bent out of shape because the team isn't extending Stroman...when for all you know, he's asking for way too much AAV ($30M+) or too much term (7 or 8 years). Why get all up in arms like our FO is stupid and too conservative when you have no idea what he's asking for? If Shatkins offered him $100M over 5 years (which would be more than fair given the recent signings of similar pitchers) and he rejected and asked for 8 years $220M....and based on that demand, the Jays traded him.....would you fault the FO?
  5. Bob - please cite all these big name FA's those teams have signed. I'll start you off. The Cubs signed Heyward and Darvish and the Cardinals signed Fowler. How are those working out for them? Houston signed Brantley to a short term reasonable deal, Braves signed JD to a 1 year deal, Brewers signed Moose for next to nothing.
  6. Man - It's been proven over and over that building through FA isn't very successful. You show me the GM that overspends and gets results... I suspect you're going to come up with 1 team. Boston. You might be able to argue the Yankees also as they essentially 'bought' Stanton from Miami even though they technically traded for him...but even the Yankees have generally been built from within or through trades (Sev, Didi, Judge, Gardner, Voit, Sanchez, Torres, Frazier) Let's look at the teams we'd love to 'be like' Houston Dodgers Cardinals Cubs? Brewers? Braves? Look at the blue print for the best teams in baseball right now man. f*** me.
  7. 163 wRC+ with a BB% of 3 and a K% of 49 in 166 PA's is pretty impressive actually.
  8. Easy with the logic and common sense man. Minds are made up!
  9. I fully expect him to step up and dominant down the stretch for any team he goes to. He is a big game player and it's pretty common to see players step up when going from a bottom feeder to a contender.
  10. That game is being played under protest because of this. Apparently Cash didn't specify where Kolarek and Roe would hit in the lineup (one went in for the 1st baseman and the other goes in for the DH).
  11. Sure - but the sooner they trade for him, the sooner he helps their team.
  12. I'd like to think front offices aren't this short sighted. But who knows.
  13. I had the Yanks/Twins game on TV with the Jays/Indians on my laptop. Best of both worlds.
  14. I mean - you're probably right. I actually like the idea of Shaw. Play him at 3rd, move Vlad to 1st and hope he can return to a 2.5+ WAR player. Stat scouting - I like Trent Grisham too. Former 15th overall pick. Looks like he made adjustments or something clicked this year as he's been a beast in AA/AAA. High BB%, low K%. 22 years old. Great secondary piece IMO. Just lacking that Top 100 prospect you expect if you're moving Stro. Maybe need a 3rd team to make it work. Top 75 prospect + Grisham + Shaw for Stro would be pretty nice.
  15. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/lets-make-some-trades-the-2019-edition/ some dooozies from Fangraphs. Most notably, "the Milwaukee Brewers acquire P Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays for SS Mauricio Dubon, OF Trent Grisham, P Aaron Ashby, and 2B Travis Shaw". I mean f***ing barf.
  16. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-2019-replacement-level-killers-second-base/ This can't hurt the value of Sogard + Galvis...

  18. What's with your new attempt to be the board comedian? It's not good man.
  19. Danner's stats are bizarre. 2017 - .160 avg, .202 BABIP, 32 wRC+ 2018 - .279 avg, .387 BABIP, 128 wRC+ 2019 - .179 avg, .208 BABIP, 90 wRC+
  20. I graduated from the Western engineering program also. Can confirm. Most professors were foreign and f***ing god awful at teaching. I rarely understood what they were talking about. I was good at memorizing things and copying my peers so I survived.
  21. What would we have to give up to get Spencer Howard, Haseley + Moniak?
  22. Why would Evan White be added to the Top 100? 23 year old 1st baseman in AA with a 123 wRC+ ? Doesn't walk, ISO <.200 What am I missing?
