Martin and Brian McCann I believe. Catchers with 50+ fWAR deserve some f***ing votes (there's only 16 in history). IMO - both deserve to be in the HOF. I believe catchers are grossly under represented and they are 2 of the best of all-time. They are right there with Yadi and Mauer - just without some of the hardware. Martin and McCann are statistically the 3rd and 4th best defensive catchers of all-time (yes I know those stats have question marks). It would be criminal to keep Martin and McCann out and put someone like Sal Perez in eventually.

Love this debate. It's one worth having every year. There is no right answer. King Felix was a f***ing special pitcher man.

If you're going to look at peaks and ignore longevity - then I think David Wright deserves a look. He was basically 50 WAR by age 30 and then the back injuries took over. That said, I'm always torn on how to consider longevity...

What do we think about this Kikuchi contract? What does it tell us about the SPing market? Personally, I think that seems about right. I think 3 years is about right. I think a 4th or 5th year would have been a sign the market is hot and you have to overpay. I also think $21M AAV seems about right. Did LA get a deal by jumping the market like this?
-
Yeah that's all fair and I'd agree that $700-$800M without deferrals would be an insane number to get to. Regardless, this is still a very rare opportunity to land a generational bat at age 26. It's crazy to think we might be the ones losing the same type of bat next offseason!

First - who the f*** uses bWAR? I can't even figure out how to find WAR totals on the BR site! Drives me nuts. Second - Soto put up 9.2 WAR before Pujols even entered the league. Ages 21-25, Pujols put up 37.6 WAR, Soto put up 32.7 WAR (having extrapolated 2020 out to a full season). Soto's defensive metrics in 2022 drag him down a bit, but yes, Pujols' defense and baserunning early in his career are better than Soto's (Pujols was actually a great baserunner at the time). As for $/WAR, it depends on what Soto is really going to sign for. Ohtani was really $460M when you remove the deferrals (we all need to stop suggesting it was $700M). I don't know where Soto lands and I expect there will be deferrals that make the # look higher, but it might be right around that $520M value that Pujols provided when you strip away deferrals. Finally - organizations only get a few opportunities to add a 26 year old generational hitter on their team.

I think people are underestimating just how f***ing good Soto is. This is like signing a 26 year old Pujols, or even Frank Thomas. He's potentially one of the best hitters of all-time. He's plenty marketable and is worth a f***ton of money. For reference, Pujols provided 51.7 WAR in his age 26-35 (10 year span) seasons.

Did Gil win the ROY based on Wins and ERA? I know 150 innings from a starter is valuable in today's world, but he was almost half the WAR of Cowser. Skenes's WAR was below Merrill too, but at least he was f***ing dominant...
-
The critique is the rules have changed since Lincecum and Strasburg. There's now a risk/reward decision to be made based on the potential to gain draft picks and years of control. The Pirates decisions surrounding Skenes cost them.
-
Luis Gil takes home the AL ROY - 5 points more than Cowser. I think that's a big surprise.

Go back and watch the 2 fights before Paul/Tyson, included the woman's fight. They were both incredible. Non-stop action for all 12 rounds. Those people beat the living s*** out of each other. -

I wonder what the team would look like if we: A - traded Vlad for a haul of young, controllable players; B - add Vlad's $30M projected salary to our available budget; and C - add through free agency. I'd love to add "Sign Soto" in there, but I just don't see that as an option. I wonder what type of team we could field... -
Agreed. The development of Dick and Agbaji are the reason to tune in these days...

Cancel the parade. -
Let's be honest - Tyler Heineman is probably starting 50+ games next year guys. I mean there's a chance we sign some old vet catcher for $1M-$2M, but I can't see much of the remaining budget being spent behind the plate.
-
I mean sure - but we have 17 holes to fill. I can't imagine backup catcher is high on the priority list.
-
I can't believe both Minny and Detroit won this week. Criminal.
-
Yeah I saw that. Should make for a rather terrible Grey Cup with the Argos backup QB in there. I don't tune into the Grey Cup anymore, but I know it's still super popular. I'm sure it could be entertaining if you have some side bets and a rooting interest.
-
Correct. Chet is out 8 weeks and the Thunder already had 2 big men out. Poeltl to OKC seems to make a lot of sense...the 2024/25 Raps should be TANKING...
-
Interesting, but it's not like any new evidence was required to confirm he's a dipshit...

We aren't getting Vlad long-term for Devers money. It's going to be a massive amount for an all bat, no defense, no base running, no IQ player. Like signing Manny Ramirez. -
So far, so good. He certainly looks like he's able to score at this level. He's the current front runner for "most improved". I've also been impressed with Barrett and Poeltl. Barrett looks like a franchise player and Poeltl very strong big. Agbaji looks like he's taken a step forward, Mogbo has looked good, Shead has shown glimpses too. All things considered, the Raps have given me a reason to at least tune in, while they deal with all these injuries. I do hope they have some pieces there. They should add a top lottery pick this year and if they "hit", they could be back on the way up faster than folks anticipate. C - Poeltl PF - Barnes SF - Barrett SG - Dick PG - IQ Bench - Agbaji, Walter, Mogbo, Shead, Mitchell "Hit" on a Top 5 pick next year and they could be cooking with oil fairly quick.
