    That's a good reminder. It's easy to point out when some sub .500 team makes the playoffs and go "this is stupid - change the rules", but that doesn't happen every year. And for every sub .500 team that makes the playoff, there's some really good team that misses the playoffs when they deserved a shot. You don't change rules based on outliers.

    Joc Pederson hasn't really played OF since 2022. The slick fielding SS for under $5M is IKF man. Atkins probably hoped he was getting 2023 Gimenez (3.8 WAR, 96 wRC+), but what we may have gotten was 2024 Gimenez (3 WAR, low 80 wRC+). He was hurt last year.

    100% I do think there's value in just growing the interest in the game when there are more teams chasing the playoffs (and participating in the playoffs) too.

    Based on Spotrac, the Jays have him for 5 years $92.4M, so it's like $18.5M on average. I don't know the exactly $/WAR calc these days, but I suspect he only needs to be a 2.5 WAR player to justify that contract. If he was a 95 wRC+ bat, he's probably a 4-5 WAR player and thus would have been providing excess value. I suspect that Jays felt there was a 50% chance that would happen. There's simply always a probability it doesn't happen, but even with a limp d*ck bat, he's a 3 WAR shortstop, which isn't a terrible outcome. I get the claims that you don't pay for defense, but a slick fielding SS impacts and helps all of our pitchers too. His base running / stolen base ability is also something the Jays have lacked for years. Honestly, if this is your biggest complaint about Atkins, he's doing pretty good.

    I still think MLB and NFL do it pretty well. 12 of 30 teams make the MLB playoffs (40%) and 14 of 32 teams make the NFL playoffs (44%). NHL is 50% and NBA is 53%. You could argue that NBA is even higher now with the play-in tournament. It's really bad - especially since the 7th and 8th seeds almost never win. They should reduce it to 12 of 32 IMO. At least in hockey, the first round is often a battle no matter what, and there are upsets. I'd be OK if MLB went back to 10 of 30 (33%). I think 40% is fine though. You have to appreciate the value it adds - the more playoff races and more playoffs teams there are, the better it is for franchises, viewership, etc.

    I tend to agree. Randy or Suzuki are both pretty good fits for us in LF, but both are entering their age 32 season. You'd love either on a 3 year deal, but there's a lot of risk in something more - and as the top 2 bats on the market, I fully expect they're going to get more - probably a lot more term. I know there's often very little good new for the Jays, but the positions we're looking to fill are LF and maybe DH. Those positions are often some of the easiest to fill and don't required huge doll hairs. That said, we may also need to fill CF, and that's going to be hard and costly...(c'mon Batman - we need you to be the guy)

    So much anger. The world is tough when you can't quite follow what's happening around you. To be honest, I do tend to agree with you on this one. Gimenez hasn't worked out the way they hoped. I'm sure the Jays thought that as he entered his prime, he could return to a 100 wRC+ bat (or pretty close to that). I suspect they also didn't think Horwitz would have enough pop to be much more than a 110 wRC+ bat. At the time of the trade, I think the probabilities of that happening were pretty solid. Sometimes things don't quite play out the way they hoped. I'm sure they're fall back was that Gimenez's floor is quite high, based on defense and base running - which is exactly what we're seeing, as he's literally our best positional player this year. It's not great, but it's not a complete disaster. This shouldn't be a difficult one to evaluate.

    Is Griffin Conine developing into the next Schwarber? 156 wRC+, .296 ISO, 12% BB, 30% K Obviously a stretch to compare him to Schwab, and still a relatively SSS, but he's been great this year. He's essentially giving them what thought Owen Caissie was going to give them (and he still may).

    It's actually wild how much swing and miss there is in Oka's bat. He was a sub 15% K rate in Japan the last 2 years. I hope he can make adjustments and get the number down to the low 20's moving forward.

    I think this is a universal belief. I would be shocked if the Jays resigned George. Would only consider it if they believe Santander is done/dead with a chronic shoulder injury.

    As terrifying as watching Chase Lee, Little and Waldron pitch in leverage situations? I think not. Who ever thought we'd miss Joe Mantiply and Tommy Nance? Wild times in Jays land.
