I tend to agree. Targeting Santander always made me uncomfortable, but I certainly didn't complain once I saw the terms of the contract. I also like how much he's regarded as a leader. Maybe drop him to 6th for a bit and take the pressure off?

Agreed. And at the end of the day $13M a season isn't crippling. It's also not like last year was some major breakout. It was his best year, but it was only a 5-10% bump on the previous 2 years. Not overly surprising for a 29 year old to have his "best" year. That's how hitting your prime works. The breakout season Profar had last year was much more "questionable" IMO and it turned out there was a reason for it. Everyone wanted more power on this team. Santander at the contract he got was a very reasonable way to add power. It's also not uncommon for players to struggle in their first year in a new org. I think we all hope he turns it around soon.

On one hand, it's an effort to help umpires call the strike zone more accurately, which I think we all want. On the other hand, Verlander is correct that a smaller zone promotes the "set up down the middle and throw 100" mindset. Hitting is already incredibly hard these days because everyone throws so hard.

I think it would be hilarious and fitting if after being removed from the ineligible list, Rose still wasn't voted into the HOF. Actually - if that were to happen, I wish he was alive to see it.

Sorry - I skim read your post and took an unnecessary turn because this point (not the point you were correctly making) drives me nuts. My point was I've heard people argue he shouldn't have been banned because he only bet on his own team to win. That is 100% short sighted and dumb.

It's always been completely irrelevant whether Rose bet on his own team to win...The only way I see that argument working is if he bet on his team to win every single game, which he didn't. I'm glad the HOF kept him out until he died.

I don't get the point of letting Rose and Jackson in now. I'd have stuck to my guns and kept them out personally.

We're witnessing an all-time great people. Simply incredible. It's insane to think he didn't play a full season until he was 25.

Interesting observation. I've been to several games since the reno's and thought the atmosphere was really good. I've only been to 1 game this year and I was in a box, so my experience was different obviously. There were 26K people in attendance and the Jays played great with a couple late inning runs to seal the victory. I thought the place had a good vibe. Overall, I think reno's to create "general" areas for people to hangout and be social are positive. Yes, most of the people in those areas aren't watching the game, but having them in the building alone helps. Personally, I'm often frustrated at games when I'm sitting around people who aren't engaged in the game - loud, obnoxious, drunk, constantly leaving their seats. I'm all for giving them a place to go and hang out with others who want to experience the game in that manner. And of course I've been "part of that crowd" at games myself (especially when travelling to other ball parks where I have no rooting interest). I don't want to be cramped up in seats surrounded by kids/families myself. The reality is stadiums really only need a certain number of seats for people who are really interested in watching the game. After that, it's wasted space and you're better off diversifying the experience to draw in more casual fans or just people looking for somewhere to hang out before a night on the town. I don't love seeing the super expensive seats full of rich snobs who miss half the game because of "business" and other BS either - but it's reality unfortunately. Almost everyone in baseball is following the same pattern - likely because it gives you the best returns. As long as Rogers is making top dollar and re-investing it into our payroll - I'm cool with it.
