    I think that's all obvious, but it's not like we let Bo go and didn't replace him with a quality, above average bat. I think that's what people are trying to say. The differences in their approach certainly don't even start to explain the complete collapse of the offense that was the best in baseball for months last year.

    Lawrence Butler went from looking like a young superstar (who the A's locked up) to a complete bust who's signed until 2031 🥴 Denzel Clarke would be a great target if the price was right. Obvious the defense is already there, but he has all kinds of tools with the bat too - he's just so raw there's a high probability the bat never develops. Ideally we'd pencil him in as a 4th OFer and see if he can develop into a starter. Gelof would be an interesting target. His bat has rebounded after he sh*t the bed in 2024 and 2025 (after his strong 2023 rookie campaign). Utility guy who's hitting lefties well this year - which would fill a need for this team. I kind of assumed he'd always crushed lefties, but it appears that isn't true. He's actually been awful v. LHP until this season, so who knows. Not an OFer, but it's wild how bad Brent Rooker's been this year too.

    100% - I figured they'd be overstating it. They need to go watch a team that's legit bottom 1/3 in the league defensively on a daily basis (for a couple of months) to really appreciate just how good the Jays defense has been over the last 3-4 years. I still do agree the Jays defense has slipped a lot more than we could have reasonably expected this year, which just sucks and has compounded our issues. I think defense gets taken for granted. Nobody wants to pay for defense, but when you don't have good defense, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Crappy defense really hurt the 2020 and 2021 teams.

    I mean this is spot on. Fans who think anything else is going to happen - or who criticize the manager/organization for not being "honest" or "frank" with them are just fooling themselves. Nobody is going to do that and judging them "telling the truth" just shows your ignorance.

    Yeah that sounds like me to use statistics to remain optimistic about my favourite team. Defense typically doesn't drop off a cliff like this either - you don't see teams go from Top 3 (Top 1?) to below average overnight like this. Shame on me for not pulling the fire alarm like you guys do a month into the season. Oddly enough, we're still 6th in MLB in defensive WAR. We know defensive WAR has it's challenges/limitations and shouldn't be leaned on too heavily, but it's still odd to see us up there when it feels like the defense has been pretty bad all year.

    Better hitting coach 😎 I mean - he hadn't hit well for 2 full seasons and was only average in 2023. It's been awhile since this 3 straight great years with the bat (2020-2022). He probably go in the lab this offseason and made some tangible changes. Good for him man - he's potentially turned his career around and is having a career year at age 31. Respect the grind as he was close to being out of the league...

    I saw a random mock trade where the Jays get Jacob Melton from TB for Varsho. Sounds good to me.

    Yikes - not good! I'm done in Houston for a ball tournament with my son and one of our pitchers took a comebacker straight to the temple. Brutal stuff. Worst nightmare.

    I had to look this up, but Alomar is actually banned from MLB. Major League Baseball placed Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar on the ineligible list and fired him as a league consultant in April 2021. This discipline followed an independent investigation into an allegation of sexual misconduct stemming from a 2014 incident involving a baseball industry employee. Following the league's decision, the Toronto Blue Jays immediately severed all ties with the 12-time All-Star, removing his banner from the Rogers Centre and cutting him from their "Level of Excellence".

    That realization was pretty clear years and years ago. It's been a terrible organization for a long time. He clearly doesn't care. Would there actually indications to him that things would be any different in Toronto? We're the AL version of the Mets.

    I think there's a pretty good possibility Varsho only signs a 1 or 2 year deal. I'm good to bring him back on that. We have no internal options and the FA pool will be weak. It's a great example of why we had to give up Moreno to get a young CFer with control. There simply aren't many in the league.

    When I say it worked out about as good as you could have expected, I mean that Kirk became a stud, Moreno didn't become a superstar and Varsho was a good player. A lot of things could have gone differently, which would have changed how this trade was viewed. Obviously Kirk becoming Mike Piazza, Varsho could have turned into Griffey Jr and Moreno could have been out of the league by now. That would have been the "best case scenario".

    Nobody claimed it was a landslide win. It was a good trade for both teams. You have to consider timing and need too when evaluating it. Jays were ready to compete, they had depth at catcher and needed a CFer. Varsho was more developed and was ready to contribute when they got him. It fit their timeline. Moreno was a rookie catcher. They typically take time to develop and reach their peak - and the Jays still had Jansen as the established catcher, along with Kirk as the up and coming future catcher. It all worked out about as good as the Jays could have expected. Kirk's been as good, if not better than Moreno during the same period. Did we get as much out of Varsho was we hoped? No, probably not, but he's been a rock in CF, he filled the need and has been a good player. I think your memory may be a little foggy. Most fans were losing their minds that we got killed in the trade and that Atkins should be fired. I remember defending the move countless times, taking shots from the regular dopes about it. It was a good baseball trade that helped both teams.

    Not the most exciting All-Star Game, but I still LOVE that it's the only major sport where the game is played with a competitive mindset and a true display of how the game is played.
