  1. Worth noting:
  2. Is this all based simply on a Morosi brainstorm tweet? I don't follow the guy and I'm seeing updates on my Twitter saying the team is actually looking into these guys. Seems like everyone's just passing around yet another Morosi musing.
  3. Not really a fan of Rodriguez. I'm skeptical of his power surge from last year, among other things.
  4. Wow. Ryan Madson, John Axford, and Jed Lowrie are their highest paid guys.
  5. I wouldn't mind seeing Luis Valbuena in blue next season. 1B/3B and a solid lefty bat. Miles, miles better than Smoak. I don't think I'm all that interested in Morneau either, sadly.
  6. This is terrible. Howarth has been the voice of summer for me for as long as I can remember. Here's hoping he and his family can get through this.
  7. Survival instinct of middle infielders. Thames is running! Get out of the way!!
  8. What's Pearce actually like in the OF? Assuming they can get him, is it worth flipping a free Melvin Upton to plug a hole? My gut says no but I'm sure someone may have done a breakdown of this somewhere. I'm curious because there's almost no talk of Upton at all. I suppose that kind of value at no cost isn't something you can pass up. Also, I keep forgetting Carlos Gomez exists.
  9. reedjohnsonfan vs. BTS out of nowhere becoming a pretty intriguing board feud.
  10. Ugh. I really like the rotation going into next April. It might be my favourite crew of guys that I can remember. That said, I still wonder about making a trade of one of the guys you mentioned to fill an OF hole or something. It's Shatkins who can find a deal there if it exists. Maybe a pitching-starved wannabe team gives up something worth sticking in the outfield that makes up for the loss of stability to the rotation. I think only Happ gets that done, though, with Liriano being a wild card and Estrada having back issues.
  11. Could be Brett's only chance to have this much say in his salary. He'd be crazy not to go to the best bidder.
  12. I think he started out rough in 2015 too, yeah. But they gave Cecil the job after seeing him throw and then after a couple of games pulled the plug. I think they gave the A-ball closer Castro more leash while Cecil still worked in a set-up role. That's a screaming panic in my books, taking the job from a proven rock like Cecil and handing it to someone who never even had a coffee in AA.
  13. So terrible. I remember it was the second or third game of the year, at Yankee Stadium, and Cecil beaned a hitter and just generally screwed things up. Talk of pulling him as the closer began pretty much immediately and the job went to a kid straight up from A-ball. Has a panic button ever been pressed so hard during the first week of the season as that? Eventually we ended up with Osuna, but the process to get there was like a f***ing Blues Brothers car chase.
  14. Yeah. It should raise a lot of eyebrows if they saw him as a negative asset and then picked him back up in the hopes that some other team would be willing to part with anything worthwhile. I can't see this turning into a Liriano situation. I don't want Bruce at all to be honest. Especially not when there's still plenty of meat left at the free agent table.
  15. I think the rumours about Bruce interest are pretty true unfortunately. If not for a failed physical somewhere last offseason we'd have been watching Bruce in LF and Saunders would have been in Anaheim.
  16. Did anyone catch the end of the Bronco/Saints game just now? Wow!
  17. I heard they were trying to get in touch with Jamie Moyer.
  18. I'm even keel on it. It's going to have to be looked at as a piece of the entire body of work this offseason. Most non-blockbuster moves should be, as long as we're not looking at out of this world dollars and years.
  19. I don't think there's much incentive to take the QO for Jose. If he's truly hit the down track, he'll just damage any future chance at longer term deals by taking a 1-year QO. He's probably just looking to cash in the biggest compromise between length and dollar amount now.
  20. I think he's basically a fence post at 1B. This is an inexpensive all-bat signing, really.
  21. Done deal. 3/33 Shatkins getting stuff done early again. Probably smart.
  22. This is some good work NJH.
  23. Because of the possible rationale that Thole was considered Knuckleball Catcher, PhD because the first two guys were bad defensively (and before the Dickey-Thole marriage became a bit of an anchor). I'm not excusing the lack of effort in developing some KB back-up catchers. Just trying to understand the decisions that were actually made by the FO at the time. Don't forget that these decisions were mostly made by execs who were happy with JPA as a starting catcher on an all-in team. A 40-yo Henry Blanco was even in the loop for a little while in 2013.
  24. I've always been skeptical about Thole's importance to the KB. The starting catchers since Dickey has been around: 2013: Arencibia (not very good defensively, and also the first year of the Cy Dickey honeymoon so it made sense they stuck with what has previously worked very successfully) 2014: Navarro (not very good defensively) 2015: Martin (great defensively and caught many Dickey games; also a factor: Navarro being the back-up) 2016: Martin (still good, but the org preferred to keep the two apart) The good "luck" here is that the Jays have had healthy catchers for four straight years, so Thole never had to pull an LBJ. We were always pretty afraid that a catching injury would occur and wanted an upgrade at back-up C. Not doing so after 2013 seemed silly and that it was going on as long as up to last year was just egregious. There's no reason to believe it couldn't have been done. It's not like learning a KB isn't a learnable skill.
  25. You have the instincts of a great artist.
