  1. Puig is too big of a question mark for my liking. I feel like we'd want to run him out of town by June. If he already played here we'd probably be looking for ways to unload him. Grass is always greener, etc. The guy was amazing in 2013-4 though.
  2. What would it cost to build a ~95-win team strictly from free agency, assuming you're getting fair value/win and not cheaping out on glove-first players? $400M+?
  3. It's not unreasonable to want to get pure OFs out there. How many guys are left to buy though? Not sure I'm willing to trade for the perfect fit when playing capable guys out of position only costs a bit of money.
  4. BREAKING: OF Jose Bautista signs 2-year pact with Yomiuri Giants, leaves burning paper bag at the entrance to Rogers Centre
  5. I wouldn't like a guy either if he tried to turn me into the franchise villain before my first season running the team. Bautista tried to use his clout to put Atkins and Shapiro in a spot but they responded by quietly and graciously waiting for the noose to tighten around Jose's neck.
  6. Unless he refuses to play 1B, just f***in sign him. Rotate him and Pearce at LF/RF/1B. Shoot Justin Smoak into the ocean.
  7. They're just rubbing it in at this point. You'd think if you're going to blow the pick that you might as well get as many years as possible for it?
  8. Agree with the bold. This is very likely the case.
  9. Pittsburgh have a logjam at 1B and three bodies capable of at least standing at the bag, all better than Smoak.
  10. I'm with 4321. Soccer is an already boring game that the major leagues around the world make even worse with staggeringly stupid timekeeping and scoring rules. I'm pretty sure it's only popular because of the low barrier to entry. Do you have a ball and feet? You have an opportunity to play soccer. And shootouts should be banned from the universe. Why not get rid of extra innings in MLB and hold a sudden death home run derby? A shootout is like something invented by children who want to finish their game before f***ing curfew.
  11. Smoak has never had a 1-win season in six years. The quality of his presence on the team seems to simply be how many of his caveman swings actually connect over ~300 PAs. But even in an up year he's barely worth it.
  12. Could be a weird bias I have, but I always feel like Granderson is this close to being done. I'm always shocked for some reason that he's still relevant. I have no idea why I think this about him though.
  13. That one too, but I was just treating it more recently. Like I said, I wouldn't necessarily take back any of the trades, just that it's worth thinking back on the method before firing shots at the current FO staff. You get JD, TT, and Price within one season, there's a good reason you can't land Cutch or Eaton two years later without having to slice up your MLB roster while hoping a rule 5er can morphs into a superhero.
  14. What's wrong with what I said? There are always people who want to trade A + B + C + D prospects for star X, but there's a consequence for it down the line. I love the Donaldson trade; I'm just saying that AA needed a lot of nukes to make 2015 happen and that the all-in attitude isn't sustainable forever. People getting frustrated with Shapiro and Atkins should remember what AA left them with. (Just to be clear, I'm not slamming AA. Just encouraging a bit of a post mortem on the ebb and flow of building a team like the 2015-present Blue Jays.)
  15. Better, maybe not. But I don't think it's unfair to say it won't hover around matching it. Maybe I'm just too excited that Liriano will bounce back, but I see him as being able to compensate a bit for any potential setbacks from the other guys (as long as there aren't multiple huge underperformances). Also, to the original post: Let's be fair to the Orioles here. The Blue Jays were awarded the first Wild Card by strength of head-to-head.
  16. My point is that I don't think there's anything to suggest they wouldn't do a bit of an overpay if it made sense in the context of where their other funds are tied up. I'm not trying to argue that Tulo and Martin are broken either. I'm just saying that if this FO is going to overpay, they probably prefer to do it on their own terms rather than triple down on 20M+ annual contracts when a couple of problematic guys on the squad already get that. Plus, they offered 80M to Edwin, which no one else has done. And they did it almost immediately too, which suggests they had a pretty solid grasp of things. Some other FO may come out and just throw the moon at Edwin, but to me Shatkins already did their due diligence and showed they're willing to do what it takes. That Edwin rejected it is not on them.
  17. It sounds like the Cards gave him some overwhelming cash, but I wonder if the positional thing was a factor too. He definitely wouldn't have gotten to play CF with Pillar here. I always figured that guys would lay off trying to label themselves as a premium position player once the big payday comes in but who knows. Welcome aboard. I disagree. I think they'll do anything if it makes sense. They offered 20M/yr to a 34-yo Edwin. I don't think they're unwilling to pay it up or even overpay. It just needs to make sense. Right now, a lot of cash is tied up in two guys who may be on irreparable decline (Tulo, Martin) so they're not in that great a position to start throwing bills around.
  18. It might be worth reflecting that the Donaldson, Price, and Tulo trades are currently preventing the team from having much flexibility. Not that I would necessarily reverse any of them, but it's good to remember that Shatkins are trying to build a different model than AA's. AA was at the helm for six years, made at least six heavy duty trades, and only built a playoff capable squad in his final year... a year which still required him to make three blockbuster trades, among others, over eight months. (I still think the 2013-14 teams were totally beseiged by bad luck, but still.)
  19. Jose is getting f***ing destroyed out there. I still think he gets something decent, but wow. I will be shocked if Jose comes back here at this point though. Pride probably being the biggest deterrent. Barely related: Who is the biggest assface when it comes to burning a bridge of money in hopes of finding more elsewhere and then screwing it all up? Off the top of my head, Ian Desmond turning down a nice chunk of cash from the Nationals, having a terrible walk year, then signing a 1-yr with the Rangers to play the OF. (Now he has a nice deal with the Rox, but it's still ultimately less and he couldn't have anticipated it two years ago.) Scherzer rolled the dice too when Detroit offered him a fat stack of cash, but IIRC that was midway into an excellent walk year.
  20. There may be no haul out there big enough at the moment. Trout puts up 9-win seasons in his sleep, will still be 25 starting work in April, and is under control through 2020. He's going to start making the big AAV soon though. Sale got Moncada, Kopech, Basabe+. Eaton got Giolito, Reynaldo+. I don't even know who wants Trout bad enough but is also a contender with farm hay. Dodgers? Pederson, Urias, etc...?
  21. That actually might be worth a Stroman deal (as opposed to Blackmon) in some way. Not sure if losing the stability in the rotation is worth it though. The Angels also don't have much behind Trout without Calhoun. The rest of their lineup includes Maybin, a dying Pujols, Cron, Simmons, Escobar, etc. Kind of dire.
  22. I'd be pleased with Jose/Edwin + Dyson. But I would have been good with that even before tonight's Fowler news.
  23. I like him too. No idea how to make that work for LA though. They seem willing to try and piece together decent team years while they still have Trout. Shame for them though since Houston, Texas, and Seattle are all quite better than them.
  24. I like Edwin and Jose, obviously, but I'm also partial to Valbuena. Decent hitter, would play 1st left-handed, and can cover 3rd. Pearce can be more of a 1st/OF. Though I do wonder if management don't want to keep Pearce relatively nailed to 1st for durability reasons. Valbuena seems like an unlikelihood though. FO appears willing to roll with Smoak at 1B in some way. Makes sense; Pearce/Smoak is fine there, so focus on getting legit OFs instead tampering with stability to arrange a risky setup with Pearce in LF. (Then again if I can land Edwin, boom Pearce goes to LF. It's Edwin ffs.)
  25. You're fine. Half the posts on this page are non-Toronto players anyway.
