  1. Exactly. The best remaining years of Vlad's career will likely be on teams not good enough to even take advantage of it. So on top of there being a real chance of somewhere between 5-10 dead money years, by the time the team might actually be good enough to contend for a deep playoff run, they might be towards the end of Vlad's prime years. It literally made no sense on any level.
  2. I remember reading a blurb posted here from Baseball America last year about Barger, where after his great 2022 they had him change his approach to improve his contact rates at the expense of launch angle. So he was making more contact but it was on the ground or line drives. I think they just overvalue contact, even if it’s weak contact, and I don’t know how a team in 2025 can feel that way. I think the new hitting coach is helping but the FO went too far deep into the contact hitting where squeezing power out of this group is going to be next to impossible, unfortunately. It’s why Springer has been fixed (so far) but the results for Wagner, Roden, etc, aren’t there. You actually have to have some power potential to develop it. That’s why I’m hoping Barger plays more, but he’s likely a 30% K% type of player so this team may not value that enough to give him a fair look.
  3. Sure maybe "worst contract in baseball" is too harsh, but it's a contract that's not going to age well. I guess it will depend on how long Vlad's prime is. If he's a 150-160 wRC+ player until age 35, then I think that's a great scenario. If his decline begins in his early 30's, then you start to envision a scenario where he's post-prime Pujols/Cabrera for like 8 years. I'm going by the latter, but would love if he has a David Ortiz aging curve. With that said, if it's the Vlad contract vs Santander/Gimenez/Kirk, then I'd take the Vlad contract in a heartbeat. He's an elite offensive player and is being paid like one. The others aren't necessarily bad contracts, but you're paying full freight on non elite players, so it's not the most optimal for a new front office having to inherit those deals.
  4. Yeah it's not limited to Mattingly, it's filtered down to the minors as well, so it's an organizational thing. They don't know how to develop power hitters, or they care too much about contact. Or both. This is an org that gave $15M to IKF. They absorbed $100M of Gimenez's contract. They took 80% or whatever it was of Myles Straw's contract when he had a 74 wRC+ in AAA last season and whose highest ISO in his career of .076 four years ago. The front office was glazing Roden and Wagner prior to the season as if they were Vlad and Bo, and both of their skill sets are contact heavy with limited power. This is what the org, for whatever reason, thinks will win games, either because they truly believe that, or they have no other options given what's available to them in the minors and free agency/trade. There was clearly a shift in 2023. Whether it was Mattingly or someone else, I have no idea, but the org was pretty good at acquiring power bats prior to that. Hopefully they do not corrupt Nimmala.
  5. It will be at some point, but it's probably fine for the next few years. A bigger issue for me is if things go south this season and there's a FO change for 2026, then the new FO is going to inherit this contract, plus 4 years of Gimenez at big money, 4 years of Santander, and 5 of Kirk when it's possible they may not have valued any of the them (especially the latter 3) at those years/price points.
  6. Glad they demoted Lucas. He did a good job getting the team 2 wins in unfavorable pitching matchups, but you can't ignore the last 2 starts. Cut bait after the luck wears off. Jake Bloss better turn into something, and quick.
  7. Yeah the Yankees lead the league in HR's and wRC+, the latter by a significant margin. Lucas most likely is going to get crushed at Yankee Stadium. Do some kind of piggyback with him and Schultz and hope for the best.
  8. Only 17 more singles between now and the 9th, and the Jays may get to 7 runs. Just have to hold Seattle to 6.
  9. The M’s brought in their version of Barnes and the Jays powered their way to 3 straight outs.
  10. Yeah I'm not going to blame Barnes here. He's on the roster in a mop up role but the Jays seemingly had no one else to use with Hoffman and Garcia not available. Even if the latter two were available, it wouldn't have mattered. This one is on the bats. They had plenty of chances.
  11. Hopefully Gimenez bunts to start the next inning.
  12. Didn't realize Barnes is 35. What the hell do they see in him other than an easy DFA once Swanson comes back?
  13. Yariel in with the ghost runner is terrifying.
  14. Looks like no Jimi or Hoffman today, which isn't a bad idea given how often they've been used, so would be nice to win a close game without having to use those two.
  15. Running full speed into Tellez doesn't look fun.
  16. My guess is he's waiting for Varsho to come back, which doesn't explain why he doesn't just swap Gimenez and Springer now that George is actually hitting, but I try to avoid getting into John Schneider's head for my own sanity.
  17. https://www.sportsnet.ca/mlb/article/springers-a-swing-driving-offensive-bounce-back-for-blue-jays/ The above was about Springer. So it was reported a few weeks ago that Barger was told by the org to do things offensively last year that he wasn't comfortable with, then Davis Schneider said he was focusing on hitting singles last season instead of trying to do damage, and now this with Springer. Don Mattingly, hitting coach from hell, should be studied.
  18. I mean, 2024 Vlad on the 2023 team would have made them pretty decent even with their flaws. The Jays need to bank on something like that. Basically the 2023 team except Vlad and Bo hit like stars at the same time. Only time that's happened since they came up is 2021. Definitely agree they need more though. If nothing else at least a starting 3B. Not sure where that comes from though.
  19. For better or worse this team is going to mimic the 2023 team. As long as it leads to a post season berth that's fine, but chicks definitely won't be digging this team. Pitching, defense, and singles (lots of singles) will be the formula.
  20. Yeah Green isn't good anymore. Hoffman-Garcia-Little-Sandlin is probably the depth chart.
  21. Yeah I don't get using Fluharty here. Hopefully it doesn't backfire.
  22. That Gimenez MVP season ended quickly.
  23. Wow, Garcia dominated the Braves best hitters there.
